Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 233: Victory
A wave of overwhelming relief filled the group as they stood in the aftermath of their victory over the Omega Zombie. Kazuichi’s hands still trembled from the adrenaline, but the battle wasn’t over yet. The sky above was darkening, not with the coming of night, but with the unmistakable swarm of Aberrants closing in. Their screeches echoed through the forest like a haunting melody, and the ground vibrated under their sheer numbers.
"They’re not going to let us rest, huh?" Jurou muttered, gripping his sword tighter. His eyes scanned the treeline as shadows darted between the trunks. "I guess we pissed them off by taking out their leader."
"More like we just woke them up," Ayaka said grimly, twirling her daggers as her stance widened. Her sharp gaze locked onto the incoming horde. "Here they come!"
The Aberrants descended from all sides, their twisted forms running on all fours, their grotesque bodies hunched over like predators. Thud. Thud. Thud. The ground shook with their approach.
"Everyone, brace yourselves!" Kazuichi barked, falling into a fighting stance, fists clenched. His mind was racing again. He could easily clear a path with his electricity, but he couldn’t. Not yet.
Instead, he focused on the immediate threat. The first Aberrant leaped toward him, its claws slashing through the air with a sickening hiss. SWISH! Kazuichi ducked low, narrowly avoiding the strike, and countered with a powerful punch to its midsection. THWACK! The force of the hit sent the Aberrant tumbling backward into the dirt.
Ayaka was next to engage, moving like a whirlwind of steel as she danced through the chaos. Her daggers flashed with precision as they cut into the nearest Aberrant, slicing through its leathery skin.
SLASH! SLASH! The creature gurgled in pain, collapsing in a heap at her feet.
Arisu, firing her arrows from a slight distance, was a beacon of calm amidst the storm. She loosed one arrow after another, each shot landing squarely in the heads of the oncoming Aberrants.
THWIP! THWIP! THUD! The Aberrants dropped like flies, but the horde kept coming, undeterred by their fallen comrades.
"Too many of them!" Lea shouted, her back pressed against Kazuichi’s as they fought in tandem. She swung her staff in wide arcs, knocking back several Aberrants at once. CRACK! Their bones shattered under the impact, but more filled their place in an instant.
Jurou, ever the frontline fighter, took the brunt of the assault. His sword cleaved through Aberrant after Aberrant, but the sheer volume was overwhelming. He grunted as one of the creatures managed to slash across his arm. SWIPE! "Damn it!" he cursed, blood dripping down his sleeve. But it wasn’t enough to slow him down. He roared, kicking an Aberrant in the chest and sending it flying backward.
THUD!
"We’re getting surrounded!" Arisu called out, her voice strained as she nocked another arrow. She had already backed herself up against a large tree to keep her distance, but the Aberrants were closing in from all directions.
Kazuichi gritted his teeth, his fists colliding with the skull of another Aberrant.
CRUNCH!
Its head caved in, but as it dropped, two more leaped over its body, snarling with rabid hunger. One swung a clawed hand at his face, and he barely ducked in time, feeling the wind from the attack graze his skin. He countered with a quick uppercut.
SMASH!
The Aberrant’s jaw snapped audibly as it recoiled, but the other pounced on him before Kazuichi could finish it, knocking him to the ground.
"Kazuichi!" Ayaka screamed, rushing toward him, but she was blocked by a trio of Aberrants, each snarling and clawing at her.
CLANG!
Her daggers clashed against their sharp talons as she fought to break through.
Pinned beneath the Aberrant, Kazuichi struggled to push it off, his arms shaking from the weight. The creature’s yellowed, bloodshot eyes bore into his, its rancid breath hot against his face. Its claws dug into his chest armor, tearing into the fabric. RIP!
"Get... off... me!" Kazuichi growled, mustering all his strength to flip the Aberrant over. WHAM! It landed hard on its back, dazed for a moment. Kazuichi didn’t hesitate. He slammed his boot into its skull, crushing it with a sickening crunch.
Ayaka finally broke free, her blades flashing as she dispatched the Aberrants blocking her path. She dashed to Kazuichi’s side, breathing heavily. "You okay?"
"I’m fine," Kazuichi said, though his voice was tight. He couldn’t let her know how close he’d come to using his powers. Not yet.
Jurou, despite the growing pile of Aberrant corpses around him, was still holding his own. His sword was drenched in blood, and his movements were starting to slow, but he refused to give in. "We need to thin their numbers or we’ll be overwhelmed!" he shouted.
Arisu, still firing from her position, nodded grimly. "We’re running low on time, too. We can’t stay here much longer."
Kazuichi scanned the battlefield. The Aberrants kept coming, a seemingly endless wave. They needed to change their tactics if they wanted to survive.
He turned to the group. "Jurou, take point with Ayaka! Push forward and create some space!" His voice was sharp and authoritative. "Arisu, keep picking them off from the back. Lea, you’re with me. We’ll handle the stragglers and watch for an opening."
They moved like a well-oiled machine. Jurou and Ayaka charged ahead, their weapons cutting through the mass of Aberrants with brutal efficiency. SLASH! SLASH! CLANG! Jurou’s sword cleaved through several at once, while Ayaka’s twin daggers moved in a deadly blur, taking down the faster Aberrants that tried to flank them.
Arisu’s arrows continued to rain death upon the enemy, each shot perfectly aimed. THWIP! THWACK! One after another, the Aberrants fell, their bodies piling up around the battlefield. But it wasn’t enough.
"We’re barely making a dent!" Arisu called out, her voice filled with frustration. "There’s too many of them!"
Lea and Kazuichi fought side by side, fending off the Aberrants that tried to circle. Lea swung her staff in wide, sweeping motions, breaking bones and knocking the creatures back. CRACK! WHACK! Kazuichi punched and kicked with precision, each strike hitting its mark, but with every Aberrant they killed, two more seemed to take its place.
His mind raced. If he used his powers now, he could end this quickly. The Aberrants wouldn’t stand a chance against his lightning, and the water manipulation would make short work of their rotting bodies. But no—he wasn’t ready to reveal that yet. Not here. Not now.
Suddenly, from the corner of his eye, Kazuichi saw movement—a group of Aberrants had broken through their defensive line and were charging toward Arisu, who was too focused on her archery to notice.
"Arisu, look out!" he shouted, but she was too slow to react.
Kazuichi sprinted toward her, his legs burning with exertion. Time seemed to slow as he closed the distance, his heart pounding in his ears. The Aberrants were almost on her, their claws raised to strike.
Without thinking, Kazuichi tackled Arisu to the ground just as the creatures lunged. WHOOSH! They sailed over them, crashing into the dirt where Arisu had stood moments before.
"Kazuichi!" she gasped, her eyes wide with shock.
He rolled to his feet, pulling her up with him. "Stay alert!" he snapped, his voice sharper than intended. "We can’t afford any mistakes!"
Arisu nodded, her face pale. "Thanks..."
But there was no time for gratitude. The Aberrants were already regrouping, their snarls growing louder as they prepared for another assault.
"We need to move!" Jurou shouted from the front, his voice strained. His sword arm was covered in blood, both his own and the Aberrants’.
Ayaka nodded, wiping sweat from her brow. "We can’t stay here much longer, or we’ll be surrounded again!" 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Kazuichi scanned the battlefield one last time, assessing their options. "There’s a ridge up ahead," he said, pointing to a small hill in the distance. "If we can get to higher ground, we might be able to hold them off!"
Lea nodded in agreement. "It’s our best shot."
Without hesitation, the group began to push forward, cutting through the remaining Aberrants with everything they had left.
SLASH! CRUNCH! WHACK! The creatures fell one by one, but they were relentless.
Kazuichi fought with a renewed sense of urgency, his mind racing. He couldn’t keep this up forever. None of them could.
As they neared the ridge, the Aberrants seemed to grow more desperate, their attacks becoming more frenzied. One of them lunged at Kazuichi, causing him to reel back.
But with a single blow, Kazuichi sliced the Aberrant in half, marking the end of the battle
