Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 252: A Scout’s Report
Nightfall descended quietly over the stronghold, and the stillness inside Kazuichi’s home contrasted sharply with the chaos of just a few hours ago. The warmth of the fireplace flickered softly, casting dancing shadows on the walls as Kazuichi sat by Ayaka’s side, his gaze fixed on her peaceful, resting figure.
Her wounds had begun to close, thanks to his blood, but a lingering worry gnawed at the back of his mind. He could still see the bite marks on her neck, the jagged wound a brutal reminder of how close she had come to death.
A few hours passed in silence before a faint stirring pulled Kazuichi from his thoughts. Ayaka’s eyelids fluttered open, her groggy expression slowly sharpening as consciousness returned.
Her pale complexion had gained some color, and she shifted slightly on the sofa, wincing at the dull pain still radiating from her injuries.
Kazuichi leaned forward, his expression soft but full of concern. "You’re awake."
Ayaka nodded weakly, her voice hoarse. "Yeah... barely."
For a moment, neither of them spoke, the weight of the situation hanging heavily in the air. But Kazuichi knew they needed answers. "Do you remember what happened out there? What attacked you?"
Ayaka’s eyes darkened as she struggled to sit up, the memories of the ambush flashing through her mind like a nightmare. "It wasn’t a normal attack," she began, her voice shaky but determined.
"I found Arisu and Amaya patrolling the eastern perimeter when we were ambushed. Ten mindless Hybrids, but... something was wrong with them."
"Wrong how?" Kazuichi asked, his tone edged with unease.
"They weren’t like the usual mindless ones," Ayaka continued, her brow furrowed in confusion. "They weren’t just wandering aimlessly. These ones... they were organized. They moved with purpose, like they had a plan. It was as if someone—or something—was directing them."
The revelation hit Kazuichi like a punch to the gut. Mindless Hybrids were exactly that—mindless, little more than feral beasts with no reasoning or coordination. But for them to be organized? It was unheard of.
Ayaka clenched her fists, frustration evident in her eyes. "They cornered us before we even knew what was happening. Arisu and I barely managed to fight them off. We only escaped because they didn’t give chase after a certain point, almost as if they were satisfied with what they had done."
A heavy silence followed, Kazuichi’s mind racing with possibilities. "Organized mindless Hybrids..." he murmured, more to himself than anyone else. He looked at Ayaka, a sense of dread settling deep in his chest. "That’s not normal. Something else is going on."
"I know," Ayaka said, her voice filled with the same worry. "We’ve fought mindless ones before, but this was different. They weren’t just hunting. They were targeting us."
Kazuichi stood, pacing the room as he processed the information. If what Ayaka said was true, then the threat they were facing was far greater than just random Hybrid attacks. It meant there was a larger force behind these assaults, a force capable of controlling the mindless creatures that roamed the wasteland.
"We need more information," Kazuichi finally said, his voice firm. "The scouts should be returning by morning. I’ll ask them if they’ve noticed anything similar in other areas."
Ayaka nodded, though she still looked troubled. "Be careful, Kazuichi. If these mindless ones are getting smarter—or worse, being controlled—it could mean there’s something out there much stronger than we’ve ever faced."
The rest of the night passed in tense anticipation. Kazuichi hardly slept, his mind constantly drifting back to Ayaka’s words. The idea of mindless Hybrids acting with purpose gnawed at him, an unsettling realization that things were spiraling out of control faster than they could prepare for.
By early morning, the first signs of life stirred within the stronghold. The scouts, having returned from their latest mission, gathered near the main entrance. Kazuichi made his way over, his expression serious as he approached the group. Ryota, one of the senior scouts, stood at the forefront, already briefing the others on what they had discovered during their patrol.
Kazuichi wasted no time. "Ryota," he called out, drawing the man’s attention. "We need to talk."
Ryota’s expression shifted from curiosity to concern as he noticed the urgency in Kazuichi’s voice. He motioned for the others to continue their discussion before stepping aside with Kazuichi. "What’s going on?"
Kazuichi explained quickly, recounting the attack on Ayaka and Arisu, and how the mindless Hybrids seemed to be acting with far more intelligence and coordination than usual. Ryota’s brow furrowed as he listened, his own unease growing with every word.
"That’s... disturbing," Ryota muttered. "We’ve noticed an uptick in Hybrid activity over the past few weeks, but this is the first I’ve heard of them acting with any kind of strategy."
"Have your scouts seen anything else out there?" Kazuichi asked, his voice tense. "Any signs that this might be happening elsewhere?"
Ryota paused, his gaze shifting toward the horizon as if weighing his words carefully. "Actually, yes," he admitted after a moment.
"There’ve been reports of other strongholds experiencing similar attacks. Hybrids, mostly mindless ones, organizing in ways they never have before. Some strongholds have taken heavy casualties. It’s not just happening here."
Kazuichi’s jaw clenched, the full scope of the situation dawning on him. "How many casualties are we talking about?"
"Too many," Ryota said grimly. "We’ve lost contact with several outposts already. The ones we’ve managed to reach are barely holding on."
The weight of Ryota’s words settled heavily on Kazuichi’s shoulders. This wasn’t just a local problem—it was something much larger, something that threatened not just their stronghold but all of them.
"Then we need to act fast," Kazuichi said, his voice hardening with resolve. "If these attacks are happening across the region, we need to figure out who or what is behind it."
Ryota nodded. "Agreed. We’ll continue scouting, but if the attacks are becoming more coordinated, we may need to start thinking about fortifying our defenses. This might be the start of something much bigger than we anticipated."
As the scouts dispersed, Kazuichi stood in the fading morning light, his mind racing with the implications of what they had learned. The stronghold had always been their sanctuary, a place of safety amidst the chaos of the world outside. But now, that safety was being threatened by an enemy they didn’t fully understand.
He knew they couldn’t afford to wait for the next attack. They had to be proactive, gather more information, and prepare for whatever was coming. And if the mindless Hybrids were evolving—or worse, being controlled—it meant they were dealing with a force far more dangerous than anything they had ever faced.
Kazuichi glanced back toward his house, where Ayaka was still resting. The image of her bloodied and beaten form flashed in his mind, a reminder of how close they had come to losing one of their own. The stakes had never been higher, and the time for action was now.
As the sun rose higher in the sky, Kazuichi steeled himself for the battles ahead. This was only the beginning.
