Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 275: Stepping Out The Stronghold, Finally
Dawn had barely broken over the Kazuichi Stronghold when Kazuichi felt the gnawing hunger clawing at his insides. His senses heightened, the familiar thirst for blood returning after days of pushing it aside. The blood bags he’d been using from his previous hunts had long since run dry, and no amount of meteorite ore consumption could quiet the primal need that now raged within him.
His eyes flicked toward the notice board, an aging wooden frame nailed to the stronghold wall, plastered with papers detailing various hunts and missions. Some were fresh, new challenges waiting to be conquered. Others were torn, faded from the sun, a silent testament to failed attempts or jobs long ignored. Kazuichi’s gaze settled on one paper in particular, its edges frayed from being detached and reattached several times. A mission marked by desperation, perhaps, one that had bested many before him.
His curiosity piqued, he ripped the paper from the board and read the details. Yamanashi. A nest of Omega Zombies had been reported there—vicious, agile creatures known for their speed and relentless pursuit of prey. According to the report, they had grown in numbers, becoming a serious threat to nearby travelers and scavengers. No one had succeeded in eliminating them yet, though many had tried. He could tell just from the wear on the paper. That fact only fueled Kazuichi’s determination.
"Perfect," he muttered to himself, folding the paper and tucking it away. His lips curved into a slight grin, the hunger already pushing him toward action.
Without wasting time, Kazuichi geared up and sprinted out of the stronghold. His legs moved swiftly, covering the rocky terrain in long, powerful strides. Each breath came easily, despite the pace, his hybrid physiology allowing him to endure what would have been impossible for any human. The wind whipped past him, carrying with it the earthy scent of the wilderness and the distant howl of predators that lurked in the shadows of the mountain ranges.
Yamanashi wasn’t far—he estimated a couple of hours if he pushed himself. The world blurred around him, the trees and mountains passing in a haze as he moved faster than most hybrids could dream of. His Blood Art pulsed within him, the synthesis of power between his water and lightning elements surging through his veins. He could feel the crackling energy, coiled and ready for release when the moment called for it.
Soon enough, the desolate landscape of Yamanashi came into view, the air here tinged with the stench of death and decay. The Omega Zombies were close; Kazuichi could feel them, their presence like a dark pulse in the atmosphere, suffocating and vile. He slowed his pace, his senses sharpening as he moved carefully through the crumbling remnants of an old settlement, the kind of place that had once thrived before the rise of hybrids and the collapse of civilization. Now, it was nothing but a graveyard, where the dead refused to stay buried.
From the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of movement. Fast. Too fast for a normal creature. He readied himself, his instincts kicking in just as a zombie launched itself at him from the shadows.
The Omega Zombies were as relentless as the reports had warned—vicious, emaciated creatures whose bodies were twisted with hunger and rage. Their eyes burned with a sickly glow, their speed far beyond that of any ordinary zombie. But Kazuichi wasn’t ordinary either.
In a flash, he sidestepped the attack, his body moving like liquid as he dodged the zombie’s clawed swipe. Lightning crackled along his skin, and with a flick of his wrist, he released a bolt of electricity that surged through the zombie’s body, sending it convulsing to the ground.
But there was no time to rest. The shadows shifted again, and two more zombies rushed at him, their grotesque bodies moving in erratic, unpredictable patterns. They were fast, their movements blurring as they closed the distance.
Kazuichi narrowed his eyes, feeling the familiar surge of power within him. He extended his hand, water spiraling from his palm in a controlled torrent. The first zombie lunged, but before it could reach him, the water solidified into a spear, piercing through its chest. A guttural snarl escaped its lips before it fell limp. The second zombie leaped at him, undeterred by its fallen comrade.
With a twist of his body, Kazuichi dodged the attack, his movements fluid and precise. He grabbed the zombie by the throat, his hand crackling with lightning, and slammed it into the ground. The force of the impact sent shockwaves through the earth, and the zombie’s body disintegrated under the raw power of his Blood Art.
But it wasn’t over. More shadows moved in the distance, a horde of them—ten, no, fifteen Omega Zombies, all charging at him with reckless abandon. They moved like a pack of rabid wolves, their speed and ferocity unmatched.
Kazuichi stood his ground, his heart racing with excitement and battle fury. He hadn’t felt this alive in days. His muscles tensed, and with a deep breath, he activated his Synthesis Blood Art in full force. His water element surged first, forming a protective barrier around him, while his lightning crackled just beneath the surface, ready to strike.
The first wave of zombies crashed into his barrier, their claws scraping uselessly against the water’s surface. But Kazuichi was already moving. He dashed forward, his body a blur of motion as he slashed through the horde, his lightning-infused strikes cleaving through flesh and bone with ease. The air was thick with the smell of charred flesh as each zombie he struck was reduced to little more than smoldering ash.
But the zombies didn’t stop. They kept coming, wave after wave, their snarls growing louder, more desperate. Kazuichi’s movements became a dance of destruction, his body spinning and twisting as he evaded their attacks and retaliated with devastating precision. Each punch landed with the force of a thunderstorm, each kick sending zombies flying into the air, their bodies shattered by the sheer power of his strikes.
One particularly agile zombie managed to slip past his defenses, its claws grazing his arm. The pain was sharp, but Kazuichi didn’t falter. He spun around, grabbing the creature by the head and slamming it into the ground with enough force to crack the earth beneath it.
Breathing heavily, he looked up to see the remaining zombies circling him, their hunger and desperation evident in their glowing eyes. For a brief moment, the world seemed to slow, the tension building as both Kazuichi and the zombies prepared for the final clash.
And then, with a roar, they charged.
Kazuichi surged forward, his fists glowing with the combined energy of his Blood Art. The ground trembled beneath his feet as he unleashed a devastating flurry of punches, each one amplified by the explosive force of his water and lightning elements. Zombies were torn apart with each strike, their bodies disintegrating into nothing as Kazuichi pushed himself beyond his limits.
Minutes passed like hours, the fight raging on as Kazuichi cut down the horde one by one. Blood, ash, and the smell of burning flesh filled the air, but Kazuichi didn’t stop until the last zombie lay defeated at his feet.
Panting heavily, he stumbled backward, his legs trembling from the exertion. His chest heaved, sweat dripping down his face as he surveyed the battlefield. The once-abandoned settlement was now littered with the corpses of Omega Zombies, their bodies torn apart by his relentless assault.
Kazuichi collapsed onto the ground, his muscles screaming in protest. He leaned back against a crumbling wall, closing his eyes as he allowed himself a moment to rest. The hunger was still there, gnawing at his insides, but for now, he was too exhausted to care.
The wind howled through the empty streets, carrying with it the distant sound of more creatures lurking in the shadows. But they wouldn’t bother him now. Not after what they’d just seen.
As he sat there, catching his breath, Kazuichi couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction. He had won. He had fought off twenty Omega Zombies, creatures that had overwhelmed others before him, and he had prevailed. But deep down, he knew this was just the beginning. The mindless hybrids were growing in strength, and the battles ahead would only get tougher.
Initially, he had decided to make this a side quest before he hunted down a couple of rabbits down south. However, he didn’t expect so many Omega Zombies gathering around the place. Well, it wasn’t at all that unusual, but fighting all of them at once took a toll on his energy reserves.
It was undeniable that the number of Omega Zombies and Aberrants continued to grow, and at the rate the Hybrids are evolving right now, it was only a matter of time before the gap between the sane and the mindless ones would lengthen.
In the near future, a fight between side of humanity and the zombies was inevitable, and Kazuichi knew that the strongholds nearby would be in the thick of it soon, seeing as to that the leader of the Mindless Hybrids had targeted him and his stronghold.
"No use thinking about it now, all we have to do is prepare." He let out a sigh as he collapsed himself back-first to the ground.
