Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 325: A Step Forward
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting the stronghold in hues of amber and gold. Laughter echoed across the courtyard as families gathered around makeshift tables, sharing stories and the fruits of their labor. The evening air carried the scent of roasted vegetables, freshly baked bread, and a hint of wildflowers from the nearby forest.
Kazuichi sat on the ramparts overlooking the lively scene below, his arms resting on the rough stone wall. The stronghold had come a long way since its early days of chaos and fear. Now, it stood as a beacon of hope—a sanctuary for those who dared to dream of something beyond mere survival. For the first time in years, life seemed to have found its rhythm again.
But for Kazuichi, peace didn’t come so easily. He couldn’t shake the thought of the Gigantic Omega Zombie the scouts had reported earlier. The creature was out there, lurking, its very existence a threat to the fragile stability they had built. He exhaled deeply, watching the last rays of sunlight fade into the darkening sky.
"You’re thinking too much again," a familiar voice broke through his thoughts.
He turned to see Arisu climbing up to join him. She moved with her usual grace, her crimson hair catching the faint light of the torches below. She plopped down beside him, her knees drawn to her chest.
"Old habits die hard," Kazuichi replied with a small smile. "Can’t let my guard down just because things are going well."
Arisu tilted her head, studying him. "You’ve done enough for today. For all of us. Maybe it’s time you let yourself enjoy the moment."
"I’ll try," he said, though his tone lacked conviction.
She smirked, nudging him with her elbow. "You’re hopeless."
The hours passed, and the stronghold’s celebratory mood eventually gave way to a quieter stillness. Most had retired for the night, their laughter replaced by the soft hum of crickets. The firelight flickered in the distance, casting dancing shadows along the walls.
Kazuichi found himself wandering toward the garden—a patch of greenery they had cultivated over months of careful effort. He wasn’t surprised to find Arisu there, kneeling beside the herb bed, her hands gently tending to the plants.
"Do you ever stop working?" he teased, leaning against the fence.
She looked up, her crimson eyes glinting with amusement. "Says the guy who can’t sit still for five minutes."
Touché, he thought, chuckling softly. He hesitated for a moment before stepping closer, his heart pounding in a way that had nothing to do with the day’s exertions.
"Arisu," he began, his voice uncharacteristically soft.
She stood, brushing dirt from her hands. "What is it?"
Kazuichi took a deep breath, the words finally tumbling out. "I need to tell you something. You’ve been my partner in all of this—the battles, the chaos, everything. I don’t think I would’ve made it this far without you."
Her eyes softened, but she didn’t interrupt.
"I’ve always admired your strength, your determination," he continued. "But it’s more than that. I care about you, Arisu. More than I’ve let on."
For a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. Then Arisu’s lips curved into a smile, genuine and warm.
"Took you long enough," she said, her tone teasing. "I was starting to think you’d never say it."
Relief flooded through him, and he laughed despite himself. "Guess I’m slower than I thought."
She stepped closer, her expression serious now. "For what it’s worth, I care about you too. And not just because you’re a good fighter. You’re stubborn, reckless, and infuriating sometimes, but... you’re also the person I trust most in this world."
Kazuichi felt a warmth he hadn’t known in years—a sense of belonging that went beyond the stronghold walls. "Thanks, Arisu. For everything."
"Don’t get too mushy on me," she said, though her smile betrayed her playful tone. "We’ve still got a lot of work to do."
The next morning, the stronghold buzzed with quiet purpose. Life carried on, as it always did—people repairing walls, gathering resources, and planning for the future. Kazuichi walked through the bustling courtyard, exchanging nods and greetings with those he passed.
He met up with Jurou by the training grounds, where a group of recruits sparred under his watchful eye.
"Morning," Jurou greeted him gruffly. "You’re up early, even for you."
Kazuichi shrugged. "Couldn’t sleep. Too much on my mind."
Jurou grunted, handing him a cup of steaming tea. "You’re not the only one. But worrying about it won’t do you any good."
"Yeah," Kazuichi said, sipping the tea. "Just trying to stay ready. The world’s not exactly forgiving."
"That’s why we’ve got each other," Jurou replied, clapping him on the shoulder. "And that’s why we’ll be fine."
As the day wore on, Kazuichi found himself preparing his gear. He wasn’t planning to go far—just a quick patrol to check the perimeter. But as he buckled his armor and secured his weapons, he couldn’t ignore the weight of responsibility pressing on him.
Arisu caught up with him as he reached the gate. "Heading out?" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"Just for a bit," he said, trying to sound casual.
She crossed her arms, her expression skeptical. "You’re not fooling me, Kazuichi. What’s really going on?"
He hesitated, then sighed. "The scout’s report from yesterday—a Gigantic Omega Zombie. I can’t ignore it. If it gets too close to the stronghold—"
"We’ll handle it," she interrupted, her tone firm. "Together."
He shook his head. "This one’s on me. I need to make sure it doesn’t threaten anyone else."
Arisu’s eyes narrowed, but she didn’t argue. Instead, she stepped closer, her voice softer now. "Just promise me you’ll come back."
Kazuichi met her gaze, the sincerity in her words cutting through his resolve. "I promise."
As he headed out of the stronghold, Amaya and Tris wished him well before he stepped out.
The forest was quiet as Kazuichi ventured deeper, his senses on high alert. He moved with practiced ease, his boots barely making a sound on the forest floor. The faint rustle of leaves and the occasional chirp of insects were the only signs of life around him.
Then he saw it.
The Gigantic Omega Zombie loomed ahead, its massive frame partially obscured by the shadows of the trees. Its grotesque form was a twisted amalgamation of muscle and decay, and its milky eyes glowed faintly in the dim light.
Kazuichi drew his sword, the weight of it familiar and reassuring in his hands. He exhaled slowly, his focus narrowing to the creature before him.
This was his world now—a world of danger and survival, of hope and determination. And though the fight was far from over, Kazuichi knew one thing for certain: they would endure. Together.
With a determined cry, he charged forward, his blade slicing through the air as the forest erupted into chaos.
The End.
