Chapter 635: Enough of a Deterrence
"I know it isn’t much, but please, make yourselves comfortable," Remarked Zelmira, as she led us into a meeting room.
A rickety, splintering round table was in the middle of the room, with ten chairs arranged around it.
The five core members of Revolt took their places on one side of the table, while the five of us took the other seats.
Ciel had withdrawn Rex, since he didn’t want to have to sit through a long discussion. Plus, keeping a Spirit summoned uses up a small bit of Mana.
It isn’t a big amount, but she hadn’t withdrawn him even once until now, so the Mana depletion had stacked up a bit and was wearing her out slightly.
Now, then, I suppose we might as well cut to the chase...
"Alright, so...let’s discuss exactly what you guys want us to do for you, and what you’re offering us in return," I remarked, getting straight to the point.
"Very well, I’ll explain what we have in mind. To begin with, we’ll escort you to the Demon nation. Once we’re there, we’ll negotiate for them to give you the ritual to send you back to your world, and in return, you’ll end this war.
You’ll kill the King and the most powerful among his supporters, along with the rest of the Royal family...well, excluding me, of course," Responded Zelmira wryly.
"Hm...will the Demons even be willing to listen to us, though? The humans started this war, so I doubt the Demons will be particularly keen on trusting or even hearing us out," Pointed out Aria objectively.
"If the five of you really are as powerful as I’ve heard you are, that should be enough of a deterrence to keep the Demons from picking a fight with you," Replied Veon, as he glanced around at us.
"Well, if negotiations break down, we can just take the ritual by force. But I’d prefer not to attack them unprovoked, so we’ll prioritize trying to talk and only fight as a last resort. Though, what if the Demons want the entirety of this nation wiped out?" I suggested with a frown.
"Yes, that’s certainly a possibility, but we have reason to believe that it’s unlikely. The Demons have been fighting quite passively, they’ve had opportunities to press the advantage in the past, but they don’t push the fighting past the border, not with their main forces, anyway.
They have sent assassins to try and eliminate the King in the past, though they stopped after a few failed attempts. It seems like they’re prioritizing minimizing casualties on their side, they certainly want to end the war, but without sacrificing their own forces in the process," Erisia informed us. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Hm, interesting.
"Still, I bet there’s at least a handful of Demons who harbor hatred against the humans and want revenge. After we wipe out the King and the major threats among his forces, the nation’s defenses will be a lot weaker. What’s to stop the Demons from sneaking in and running amok?" Remarked Jaden in response.
"Don’t worry, we’ve already thought of that. Once the King is dead, Revolt will take over the nation. When we negotiate with the Demons, we’ll also ask them to form an alliance with us once we take over. A non-aggression pact, at the very least," Explained Zelmira.
Hm, not a bad plan on paper. But it seems a bit naive to me...I have my doubts over whether the Demons will actually agree to that.
I’ll keep my thoughts to myself, though. No need to make this more complicated, the simpler we keep it, the faster we’ll be able to get back home.
And taking the ritual that’ll get us back home by force isn’t the best idea...we don’t fully understand how Ritual Magic works, after all.
But based on the sacrifice requirement of the summoning ritual that brought us here, the more complex ones seem to require tougher activation conditions, and we can’t afford for anything to go wrong when we try to go back to our world.
"By the way, when you say you want us to kill the most powerful of the King’s supporters, exactly how many people are we talking here?" Inquired Ciel curiously.
"Well, you already killed the Vice-Commander of the Knights. There’s still the Commander, then the Captains of Knight Squads, of which there are seven. Their Vice-Captains are threats too.
Then there’s the Church of Lyon. Most of their top members are noncombatants, but they have a covert unit known as the Inquisitors, we need them gone too.
Either way, the Church needs to be wiped out. They’re the ones who started this war in the first place, we can’t let them continue to exist," Stated Zelmira with a dark look on her face
"Hm, what about teleportation? When we killed the people in the throne room, the King and the Knight Commander teleported away somewhere. Couldn’t they just escape to a different part of the nation or something?" Responded Aria with a frown.
"No need to worry about that. Ezel here has got us covered on that front," Grinned Drewen, nodding at the short young woman.
"Hm? Oh, right...I’ve created a ritual barrier that will prevent teleportation, I can cast it over the entire city," She replied with a lethargic sigh, leaning back in her seat and staring up at the ceiling.
"And if the King teleports before we activate that ritual, I know exactly where he’d go. There’s a secret safe room underneath the castle, it has no entrances, the only way in is with a teleport ritual.
Very few know about it outside of the members of the Royal family, so if he runs, that’s almost certain to be where he runs to.
We’ve been waiting for our opportunity to overthrow him for quite a while, we’ve had our preparations in place for some time now. We always knew that we’d need to act quickly as soon as an opportunity arose, and now, I’m glad we did," Remarked Zelmira, before adding, "So, any other questions?"
