Chapter 39: An Unwelcome Reunion

He swerved right, then left, jumped, and ducked. His movements were unpredictable, which caused the vines to collide with each other and get tangled.

The Primal Predator bloodline had a remarkable ability to detect danger, and the location it came from with precision, and because of that he did not need to see the vines to dodge them. It was as though he had eyes all around his body.

Before long, he managed to pass through the area where the Mawvine trees were located without sustaining a single scratch.

On the other side, even though the four wolves were of higher rank than the Mawvine trees, they had a hard time dealing with them.

The vines attacked them from every direction as well, and because of their large sizes, and their lack of ability to sense danger with great precision, the vines managed to grab them. They wrapped around their legs, and necks, made them stumble, and began pulling them with all their strength toward the massive mouths.

The wolves let out terrifying growls, bit the vines and tore them with their claws, the moment one of them broke free it surged toward a nearby tree, and shattered its wide trunk.

All the other trees felt the threat, retracted their vines, and closed their mouths, and strangely, more bark grew around their trunks, forming an extremely hard defensive layer.

The wolves did not care about the trees, and without any hesitation surged after Arthur, for because of their brief stop, the gap between them and him had widened greatly, and he had disappeared from their sight.

At the front, while running like a madman, Arthur’s bloodline displayed strange activity, and he immediately realized that he was close to reaching his destination, which was the powerful monster whose territory he had avoided earlier.

Again, the wolves appeared behind him, and little by little, they closed the gap between themselves and him. Their expressions turned savage, and it was clear that they were extremely angry.

He did not feel anxious, and showed no sign of tension, his eyes remained fixed on his path, while his lips twisted, in a small smile, that carried no happiness, only misery, and regret.

The activity his bloodline was displaying grew more intense, and at that moment, a hint of hesitation appeared in his eyes, he began to reconsider his decision, and slowed his speed a little.

’I do not want to die.’ This thought echoed in his head.

His fear was understandable, for after all, he did not truly have a plan, and what he intended to do was mere suicide.

The bitter truth was, that no matter what he did, his fate was death, whether at the hands of the wolves, or at the hands of the monster that had caused his bloodline to react.

Growl!

Suddenly, the sound of a loud growl snapped him out of his daze, he quickly turned around, and found the wolves directly behind him. They bared their fangs, and pounced on him.

"Shit." He quickly changed his course, and by some miracle managed to evade them.

All his hesitation disappeared, and without further delay he headed toward the powerful monster that had caused his bloodline to react. It was very close.

Within a few seconds, he reached it, and contrary to his expectations, he found no monster at all, and all he saw was a human girl covered in wounds, lying on the ground like a lifeless corpse.

This scene was too unreasonable to be real, but he did not care, or rather he did not have the time to think about what was happening, for the four wolves pounced on him again, unconcerned about the near-dead human lying before them.

Without any hesitation, Arthur leapt over the girl’s body, stepped hard on her back, and pushed her face into the dirt.

Then after that, he surged away fleeing, for he had been hoping to awaken the monster, and escape with his life leaving the four wolves to face its wrath, but unfortunately, things did not go according to his wishes.

The moment he took three steps away, several white silk threads shot from the woman’s body.

One of them grabbed his legs, and at an unbelievable speed wrapped around his body, forming a cocoon that prevented him from moving, and the same happened to the four other wolves.

Slowly, the human girl raised her head, and even though he was the one who had hit her, she did not look at him at all, and directed all her attention toward the four wolves.

"..." The woman said something in a language he did not understand, and immediately after that something extremely shocking happened, that made his mouth fall wide open.

The woman began to grow in size, her form changed, and little by little she transformed until she finally became a massive black spider with a few red markings.

"It’s her." Arthur immediately recognized the spider’s identity, and how could he not, for their last encounter had been just the previous day, when she was fighting the humans.

"Fuck." He swallowed hard with great difficulty. He was not stupid enough to believe that his former neighbor would be merciful, and let him go.

He struggled desperately to break free, he bit the cocoon around him, and tried to tear it with his claws, but that was useless.

The threads were extremely sticky, and at the same time hard as steel, his frenzied movements only made him even more trapped.

The four wolves did the same thing, and they too, were unable to break free.

Suddenly, the spider pulled one of the wolves toward her, opened her massive mouth which contained two long pointed fangs, and bit it.

She injected it with her lethal poison, and its flesh, and bones dissolved, its entire body turned into a soft paste, or perhaps lukewarm soup, there was not much difference really.

The moment the spider prepared her meal, she sucked it up like drinking juice through a straw, then swallowed it.

A strange expression appeared on her face, she looked happy, and quickly pulled the second wolf, and did the same to it, dissolved it with her poison, and swallowed it.

Then she pulled the third wolf, and the fourth, and in the end she turned toward Arthur.

Their eyes met, Arthur felt intense terror, while the spider displayed a hint of confusion, for he seemed somewhat familiar to her.

But as expected from a monster, she ignored that simple feeling that was bothering her, then pulled him toward her, eager to devour him.
