Chapter 1270 - 1245: Why Is It You?
After seeing Ye Chen and Little Jing leave, Zhang Rumei cried and said, "My sister is such a good person, how did she end up in such a situation? I think it’s definitely because my brother-in-law has too many enemies outside, dragging my sister down too."
She said this intentionally to mislead Zhou Susu, aiming to divert the police investigation.
If it weren’t for that recording, Zhang Rumei’s statement would indeed seem reasonable. After all, Little Jing’s parents run a business, surely they have competitors who may retaliate when they suffer losses.
"Miss Zhang, why did you say that? Do you know something?" Zhou Susu asked the malicious woman in front of her.
"My brother-in-law’s business is so big, naturally, he has many enemies. Those people are truly despicable, harming them out of selfish desire," Zhang Rumei said, wiping away her tears.
"You’re right, Miss Zhang, some people indeed commit heinous acts for selfish desire," Zhou Susu replied with a smile.
"Officer Zhou, has the murderer been caught? I must tear him into pieces to avenge my sister and brother-in-law," Zhang Rumei said angrily.
"Miss Zhang, although the murderer hasn’t been caught, we’ve narrowed the suspect down to the family around Little Jing’s parents," Zhou Susu said while observing Zhang Rumei’s expression.
"How is that possible? How could the family around my sister and brother-in-law kill them? If true, that person is simply worse than an animal," Zhang Rumei retorted.
However, she had a slight change in expression, albeit briefly. Zhou Susu, known for her keen eye, still caught it.
"You’re right. Based on our evidence, that’s the case," Zhou Susu said with a smile.
She then added, "I said the murderer is a family member, but that doesn’t mean they committed the murder personally. Contractor homicide is possible, don’t you think?"
"I still think it’s impossible. If true, that person’s heart is truly malicious. As far as I know, my sister and brother-in-law treat those around them very well and often help relatives and friends. Are you sure you’re not mistaken in narrowing down your suspect range?" Zhang Rumei countered again.
She knows the police may have suspicions but likely not directed at her.
Considering she volunteered to return from abroad and dared to come to the police station, it shouldn’t raise any suspicion.
Zhang Rumei is very clever. She believes her willingness to come to the police station with Zhou Susu is enough to prove she’s not the murderer so the police will rule her out.
However, things didn’t go as planned—her intelligence has backfired, and the police have already focused on her.
Regardless of her performance, she can’t escape.
One reason Zhou Susu didn’t act hastily is because Ye Chen advised her to wait for his return.
Although she didn’t understand Ye Chen’s reasoning, she knew listening to him would be correct.
After a while, Ye Chen walked in, but Little Jing was nowhere to be seen.
It turns out, Ye Chen had sent Little Jing back earlier, worried she might be frightened knowing her aunt is the murderer. He feared Zhang Rumei might take Little Jing hostage out of desperation, complicating the situation.
"Mr. Ye, where is Little Jing?" Zhang Rumei looked at the handsome young man entering and asked.
"Little Jing said she was tired, so I sent her back," Ye Chen replied with a smile.
"Sent back? I was going to take Little Jing away," Zhang Rumei said, puzzled.
She wasn’t sure why Ye Chen sent Little Jing back after previously agreeing with Zhou Susu to take her.
"Miss Zhang, I’ll take you to find Little Jing shortly," Ye Chen said with a smile.
He noticed Zhang Rumei’s expression seemed anxious and quickly reassured her.
"No need. There’s nothing worthwhile here at the police station; you should just take me to Little Jing," Zhang Rumei said, her expression turning displeased.
She spoke while standing to leave.
Ye Chen, being a man, couldn’t physically stop her.
Then, Zhou Susu said, "Miss Zhang, actually, I wanted to discuss Little Jing’s custody with you."
"Isn’t it already settled? What’s left to discuss?" Zhang Rumei said irritably.
At this moment, Zhou Susu appeared to be stalling, seemingly waiting for something.
Zhang Rumei was smart; she knew the police didn’t have enough evidence to accuse her of contract murder, so they couldn’t limit her freedom.
Once she leaves the police station, everything will be easier.
"Officer Zhou, I just returned to the Country and need to adjust to the time difference; I’m not feeling well. I have a lot to do, no time for chatting here. I entrust my sister and brother-in-law’s case to you, ensure capturing the murderer to console their souls," Zhang Rumei said, walking toward the exit again.
She knew she couldn’t stay here any longer; she might not be able to leave if she did.
Zhou Susu knew stopping Zhang Rumei wasn’t possible; she looked anxiously at Ye Chen, uncertain of his strategy.
Ye Chen glanced at his phone, smiling.
Zhou Susu was fuming, wondering how he could smile at such a critical moment.
It was difficult to trick Zhang Rumei into coming to the police station; letting her leave would make catching her later impossible.
Zhou Susu intended to confront Zhang Rumei, showing the police knew she was the murderer. Although she didn’t kill personally, contracting murder is still illegal.
However, she knew Zhang Rumei was unlikely to confess, potentially turning the situation around and causing trouble.
Playing the recording for Zhang Rumei was considered, but it only proved her resentment towards Little Jing’s mother, not her culpability.
Undoubtedly, Zhang Rumei would have various excuses to claim innocence.
Moreover, Ye Chen repeatedly instructed her to stay calm and wait for him.
Now that Ye Chen had returned, aside from sending Little Jing back, he hadn’t done anything else.
Seeing Zhou Susu’s angry glare, Ye Chen knew she was anxious about Zhang Rumei leaving.
"Miss Zhang, please wait a moment; I’ve had Little Jing brought back," Ye Chen said with a smile.
Then, he sent Zhou Susu a Weixun: "That person will arrive soon."
Zhou Susu was confused about who Ye Chen referred to and looked at the man in front of her with doubt.
Zhang Rumei stopped after hearing and knew she needed to become Little Jing’s guardian to obtain everything her sister and brother-in-law owned.
Once Little Jing arrived, she would take her abroad, ensuring no one could find them.
Zhang Rumei returned to the sofa, smiling, "Thank you, Mr. Ye."
Ye Chen closed the door and sat on the sofa too.
Witnessing the scene, Zhou Susu sighed in relief for successfully keeping Zhang Rumei there.
At that moment, someone walked in from outside.
Zhang Rumei initially thought it was Little Jing, but when she saw who it was, her face turned pale with terror, asking, "Why is it you?"
