Chapter 168: Pride
[Time remaining: 2 minutes 36 seconds]
The monster still stood tall and aggressive.
Not even a scratch marked its body despite all the attacks thrown at it, and from what Kyle could tell, it would only take a little longer before he could no longer stop Veronica from stepping in.
No... he couldn’t let that happen.
’Aella, I need your help. Can you regulate the Genesis so I don’t accidentally use too much?’
{No explosion, Papa? Aella understands!}
She sounded oddly excited.
Kyle was genuinely thankful for that.
He charged forward.
Several tentacles lashed at him from the left. They were fast, monstrously so, but nowhere near fast enough to escape the sight of God’s Eye.
Kyle leapt over the first two vines and fired an arrow at the third.
It missed.
He clicked his tongue, released Aella, then twisted sharply on his heel and jumped backward.
KHWAAANG!
The creature roared.
A massive tentacle smashed through the pillar Kyle had been standing on moments earlier, chunks of concrete exploding outward as he narrowly slipped past it.
The monster finally began moving.
One heavy step.
Then another.
The entire floor trembled beneath its weight.
Kyle summoned Aquilla and pulled back the bowstring, aiming directly at the ground.
"What is he doing?" Christopher muttered with a deep frown.
Veronica’s worry only grew.
This monster was unlike anything Kyle had faced before. Someone like Layena would have been a far better match for such a creature, if only because of the sheer difference in experience between them.
Clenching her fist tightly, Veronica muttered inwardly,
’The moment even one of those things touches him, I’m obliterating that vermin.’
Kyle continued dashing around the battlefield while concentrating Genesis, Aella regulating the flow perfectly alongside him.
Thunk!
Several tentacles pierced into the wall exactly where his head had been a moment earlier.
Kyle never slowed down.
He was buying time.
[Time remaining: 1 minute 42 seconds]
KHRAAAANG!
Suddenly, the monster retracted all its tentacles before violently slamming both hands together.
DOOOOM!
A devastating shockwave tore across the surface and blasted straight toward the path Kyle was about to cross.
Veronica immediately tensed, ready to move.
Only for her eyes to widen in shock.
Kyle avoided the attack by smashing his shoulder into the nearest pillar, forcibly changing his trajectory. He had been moving too fast to properly stop himself, but thanks to that brutal collision, he narrowly escaped the shockwave that completely caved in the concrete behind him.
That was close.
Kyle let out a rough breath, sweat dripping down his forehead as his chest heaved heavily.
He had slammed shoulder-first into the pillar at full speed, so naturally, the pain throbbing through his arm was unbearable.
During that brief pause, he glanced toward Veronica.
She looked back at him immediately.
Kyle gave her a small nod, silently telling her he was fine.
But Veronica clearly wasn’t convinced.
She looked seconds away from charging straight into the battlefield herself. The tension in the air kept rising, inching closer and closer to the breaking point.
Kyle glanced at the timer.
[Remaining Time: 1 minute 21 seconds.]
He clicked his tongue.
Not because of the remaining time, but because—
SSSSSS!
Several vine-like tentacles suddenly wrapped around the pillar, some brushing against his shoulder and calves.
Kyle instantly jerked forward, though not before several deep cuts opened across his skin.
Those disgusting tentacles had fucking teeth.
’Shit—’
Then something unexpected happened.
[Host, its slit. The crimson slit on the right side of its face. Aim for that!]
Brawler: [Ah, boring.]
[God of Mischief is a little disappointed.]
WarHorse: [Slit the bastard open, brother!]
The system had finally revealed its weak point.
Kyle ignored the voices completely.
The moment the pillar began crumbling beneath the constant erosion, he stepped out into view, standing firmly with his bow raised and a golden arrow pulled taut between his fingers.
The monster slammed its left foot against the ground before thrusting both arms forward, countless clawed vines surging toward him all at once.
Christopher immediately tensed and rose to his feet, completely forgetting about his grandson.
Veronica had already clenched her fist, Genesis wrapping violently around it.
Yet just before the tentacles could come anywhere near him—
"You are so fucked."
Kyle released the bowstring.
The arrow shattered the sound barrier.
Concrete exploded beneath his feet, cracks racing across the ground as the entire area trembled under the sheer force of its release.
Kyle knew it couldn’t dodge.
His aim was perfect.
The arrow was way too fast.
It was lethal. It was final.
He had won—
"No..."
Or so he thought.
TING!
BOOOOOM!!
The monster knew it couldn’t evade the attack.
And Kyle knew it too.
But in the final second, the weak point, that crimson slit on the side of its face, suddenly disappeared.
The explosion blasted the creature backward.
Genesis scorched through its flesh, flames devouring chunks of its body as the shockwave shook the entire floor.
Yet it still wasn’t enough to bring the monster down.
Its charred skin began repairing itself almost instantly.
Absence coated around its body like a second skin, writhing over the wounds and sealing them at a horrifying speed.
The creature had moved its weak point.
That crimson slit had shifted from its face to the center of its broad chest, fully exposed.
Yet instead of relieving him, it only frustrated Kyle even more.
’It can move it... fuck!’
He gritted his teeth, fury burning clearly in his eyes.
Just then—
[Host, only fifty seconds remain!]
Less than a minute.
It’s not about rewards now. It’s about ego.
Kyle took a deep breath.
Fuck it, we ball.
"Veronica!" he shouted as the golden bow vanished from his hand. "If you trust me, then don’t take a single step forward. Just this once... have faith in me."
The silver-haired woman froze, baffled not only by his words but by the fact that Kyle had willingly dismissed his armament.
Christopher frowned and glanced toward Veronica, only to see her still rooted to the spot in shock.
Meanwhile, Kyle stopped hiding entirely and stepped out directly before the monster.
GHRAAAAAA!!
The creature roared violently, seeing its prey finally standing in front of it.
Kyle began walking forward.
One step.
Then another.
The monster thrust its left arm outward, countless tentacles bursting forth as they shot straight toward Kyle’s throat.
Yet just before they could reach him—
’System, turn off God’s Eye.’
TNG!
A translucent barrier suddenly manifested and repelled the tentacles away instantly.
"Huh?"
"What...?"
Christopher and Charles muttered at the exact same time as Kyle suddenly broke into a sprint toward the creature.
The monster roared furiously and unleashed even more tentacles, aiming for every part of his body.
However, just as everyone expected Kyle to be torn apart, barriers repeatedly materialized around him, deflecting every attack without fail.
"...And there’s zero Genesis presence around him..." Christopher muttered, eyes widening in disbelief.
"AAAHHH!"
Kyle roared as he leapt over a collapsed pillar and launched himself straight toward the creature’s weak point.
GHAAAAAA!!
The monster shrieked in agony the moment Kyle’s knee slammed directly into the crimson slit embedded in its chest.
It staggered back in shock and pain.
Its massive hands immediately moved, one trying to crush Kyle against its chest while the other clawed at him violently, desperate to rip him away from the weak point.
TNG!
A barrier materialized the instant the first strike landed.
The impact thundered across the entire floor.
Kyle felt his bones rattle from the sheer force behind it. Blood surged up his throat, and for a split second, his vision blurred violently.
But he didn’t let go.
Instead, he drove his knee and fist deeper into the crimson slit.
THUD!
The monster screamed.
Its second hand slammed down.
TNG!
Another barrier formed.
It held the force without a single crack forming and Genesis was alreadyhealing his injuries at an inhumane pace.
Though the impact leave him momentarily shaken. His arms trembled.
His ribs screamed protested but he didn’t care.
His fingers dug deeper into the creature’s flesh as if anchoring himself there.
"You think..." Kyle growled through clenched teeth, "...I’m letting go now?!"
BOOM!
Another punch crashed into the weak point.
The crimson slit twisted violently.
The monster staggered backward, roaring so loudly the air itself trembled.
Its tentacles lashed around wildly, smashing through pillars and walls in blind panic.
Yet Kyle remained attached to its chest like a madman.
The creature struck him again.
And again.
Each impact summoned another barrier.
TNG!
TNG!
TNG!
But as if they were attached to his soul, every barrier appeared right exactly where he was struck and they held all the force that could have battered him to death.
He didn’t stop.
The impact, the surrounding, the timer, the people, all became invisible.
He just wanted to punch the shit out of this creature!
*THUNK* *THUNK*
Kyle’s fists became bloodied.
His knuckles split open.
Yet he kept hammering the weak point over and over without pause.
BOOM!
"DIE!"
BOOM!
"JUST—"
BOOM!
"DIE ALREADY!"
The crimson slit finally began to fracture.
Thin cracks spread across it like shattered glass, pulsing violently as black fluid burst outward from the wound.
The monster’s roars slowly turned distorted.
It staggered back, ready to reach the Rift.
Kyle snarled, "You ain’t running away, bitch."
He suddenly climbed the monster, stepped on its shoulder and jumped high.
Mid-air, the golden bow materialized in his hands, the arrow pulled and Genesis flooded the entire building.
What followed that...was simple and clear annihilation.
