Chapter 168: Old

"You’re Amy?" Stanley looked a little surprised, but now that he thought about it, who else would heal him?

"I am," the girl said, her beautiful face smiling toward him. "What is your name, young man? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you before."

"Stanley," he answered. "I joined Yesterday."

"Oh!... oh..." her face drooped a little. "So you chose this instead of spending your time in prison, huh?"

"Prison?" Stanley shook his head. "I wasn’t going to prison. I was going to be killed."

"Killed?" Amy couldn’t help but look at him with a look of shock. "Why?"

"Because... I’m a Nova," Stanley said. "Did you not hear about me?"

"AH! Nova, yes. They were talking about a new one joining. I completely forgot," Amy said. "Haha, so you are the new Nova. I saw you guys fighting and thought you were just someone with superspeed."

Stanley didn’t say anything.

"Anyway, haven’t you been fighting for hours? You must be incredibly hungry," she said. "You should go eat something in the cafeteria."

Stanley only then focused on himself and realized he was indeed quite hungry. "Yes, I should go eat," he said.

The two of them started walking to the elevator, and Stanley looked back at the mess he had left. "What will happen here? Who cleans this?" he asked.

"We have staff that regularly come and clean up stuff here," Amy said. "You don’t have to worry about anything here."

"Oh... okay," Stanley said and walked away. He got into the elevator with Amy, who already had a smile on her face.

"How strong are your healing powers?" he asked curiously. Unlike the Mayor who had turned out to be faking his healing powers when he had just been using modern machinery, this girl truly did have a healing power.

"How strong... uhh?" she thought for a bit. "I can heal anyone who hasn’t died. I don’t know more than that. No one’s been so hurt and alive that I couldn’t heal them until now."

"I see," Stanley said with a surprised look. "You’re strong."

"I’m just a healer," Amy said with a bit of a smile.

"May I ask what your activation ritual is?" Stanley asked.

"Activation... ritual?" she looked at him weirdly. "Do you mean Activation condition?"

"Condition? Is that what they call it?" Stanley asked. "They called it Ritual where I’m from, sorry."

"No need for apology," Amy said. "My activation condition is simple. I just need to touch the people that I want to heal. My powers activate in close contact."

"Oh, through the clothes even?" Stanley asked.

"Yes, through the clothes and all," Amy answered.

"Woah! That’s a strong power," Stanley said. "Is there a limit to how old the wounds have to be?"

"Old? No. I can heal them no matter when they got the wound. I can even heal scars and whatnot," she said.

"Huh?" Stanley looked toward the girl with a confused look. "But... the director. He had a missing arm, doesn’t he? Can you heal that?"

"I can," she said. "But the director doesn’t want me to heal it, so I don’t. It’s fine, he keeps it that way for a reason."

"Oh... what reason?" Stanley asked curiously.

"That... I cannot tell you," she said.

The Elevator dinged and the door opened. "This is where you leave," she said, sending him out. "Hopefully I won’t have to see you later."

She waved goodbye as the Elevator door closed and she was sent up to the higher floors. Stanley stood there for a few moments, still in disbelief at just how pretty the girl was.

More than that, he was surprised he was even focusing on that. It didn’t feel natural for him to be focusing on a girl so much.

He wandered around, looking for the cafeteria and quickly found it after asking a few computer screens that were along the way.

He was unsure what he was supposed to do here, and looked at what the rest were doing. After seeing them simply ask for the food they want, he decided to do the same.

Since he liked the noodles so much from last night, he got that again. He sat down at a table and an actual human lady brought him the food.

She wore a red uniform, which he had seen a couple of people wear along the way.

He looked at the dish and started to happily eat it. It was ever so tasty, just as tasty as it was yesterday night when he first ate it.

He was enjoying it all alone when a hand tapped him on the back. He turned around to see Sheila walk to the front.

She looked at what he was eating and raised an eyebrow. "Noodles?" she asked.

"It’s tasty," he said. "I was craving for it. Is something wrong?"

"Depends, what did you eat last night?" she asked.

"Uhh... Noodles," Stanley said.

"You need to change what you eat. Not just for nutrients, but to keep what you find tasty, tasty," she said and sat down on the chair in front of him.

"What do you mean?" he asked with a confused look on his face.

"If you continue eating this all the time, you will end up hating it sooner or later," she said. "So change it up a bit. Do you want me to tell you what you should eat?"

"Sure," Stanley said. "If you think I’ll like it, I will eat it."

"Okay, I’ll give you a list later," Sheila said. "So, how was the training? Surely they put you as a fighter."

"Yes," Stanley said with a slightly angry look. "He nearly killed me though while I was fighting."

"Hmm... I can’t say I’m surprised," she said.

"You’re not surprised that I almost died," he asked.

"That was Gray’s way of telling you not to get overconfident," she said. "He frequently does that with newcomers that are a bit overconfident. Although, in your case, it was probably to get you to stay in your lane as a Nova. He’s showing that if you go out of your way, he will kill you."

"Well... they did say that," Stanley sighed a little.

"Then. Amy should have healed you, right?"

"Yes," Stanley said, remembering the pretty lady from before.

Sheila looked at him with a weird face. "Did you fall for her as well?" she asked with a slight smile.

"N-no!" Stanley quickly replied.

"It’s fine, everyone falls for her," she said. "It would be weirder if you didn’t. She’s just that beautiful. But don’t get mistaken though, she’s way too old for you."

"I wasn’t really interested in being together with her. She looks at least 6 years older than me," he said. "That—"

"Hah! 6? Try 60," Sheila said.

Stanley paused. "W-what?" he looked at her. "60?"

"Maybe more," Sheila said. "Honestly, we have absolutely no idea how old she is. All I know is that every single person here knows of her and will tell you that she has been here since before they started."

"Even the Director talks to her with respect," Sheila said.

"She’s that old?" Stanley couldn’t help but be surprised. "But... she looks so young. How does she look so young?"

"I don’t know," Sheila said. "I think Gray said it had something to do with her powers, but I’m not sure. It could be anything."

"I see," Stanley spoke. He found it hard to believe that the prettiest girl he had ever seen was as old as a grandma. "Although, it is not that unique, is it?"

"Hmm? What is?" Sheila asked.

"Amy being old," he said. "That Shadow Nova, Raven, is old too. And she looks about the same age as her."

"Huh... now that you say that, you’re right," Sheila said. "I wonder if these two know something about remaining youthful that we do not."

"Maybe," Stanley said. He continued eating and the topics changed. The two talked about a few more mundane things as well as some serious ones.

Sheila had already gotten the association to act on finding the Shadow Nova, so Stanley didn’t have to worry about her for now.

Stanley also told her about his new powers, which didn’t get her as excited as she could have been had it been an actual power that did something.

"You’ll grow some more powers in the upcoming day," she said. "Although, I’m not sure how much more powers 7000 souls can get you. From what I know, it all depends on the Nova and the power they are to unlock."

Stanley nodded. "I hope it’s a good one."

They talked for a while longer and Sheila promised to help Stanley around for a while. To his surprise, it turned out that she was going to leave this place in a week or two for another job that had come up.

"How many more jobs do you have to do now?" Stanley asked. "How much did I bring you?"

"Oh right, I should have that information soon," she said and tapped on her wrist where she wore a watch that seemed to house a computer, like everywhere else in this world.

She tapped through a few things and ended up with a result.

"62%?" she nearly shouted out loud. "How?"

Stanley looked at her. "Is that good or bad?" he asked. "It’s good right?"

"Extremely," She said. "I thought you would get me just over 50%, but you actually got me 62%. Whatever you did, it must have impressed the director quite a lot."

"Oh," Stanley smiled. "So... how much more do you need?"

Sheila looked at the number and couldn’t help but bring out a wide grin.

"Just 13%."
