Surviving in the Beast World with a System
Chapter 353 - 336: I’ll Reluctantly Accept You
Being master hunters, they processed their kills with a speed that was nothing short of incredible.
The Beastman Warriors had just finished gathering all the hides when the roars of Fierce Beasts echoed from the distance.
"Go!"
Their expressions hardened. Shouldering the Beast Skins, claws, and fangs, they dashed out of the valley and vanished into the dense jungle in the blink of an eye.
As for the Fierce Beasts drawn by the scent of blood, they were immediately captivated by the carcasses in the valley. For them, it was another sumptuous feast.
Meanwhile, in the Snow Tiger Tribe, the once-empty plaza was now bustling with activity.
Bare-chested, the males grunted with effort, rhythmically pounding with wooden pestles. In front of each of them stood a stone trough, each one thigh-high.
Chatting amongst themselves, the females tossed pale yellow, dung-like Sharp horned Beast Eggs from their back-baskets into the troughs. The males were responsible for pounding the eggs into a powder. Afterwards, the powder was packed for storage into crude earthenware jars fired by the Half beastman Warriors.
The young cubs, not yet fully grown, carefully carried the earthenware jars to the Storage Cave on the back mountain to be put away.
Because she had found the Sharp horned Beast Eggs—a food that was tasty, filling, and easy to store—Wu Yue had actually been given her own small cave to live in during the great rainy season.
It wasn’t until Grandma Hua Shu took her there that Wu Yue learned that during the great rainy season, all the tribe members had to move into a large cave on the back mountain in advance.
The large cave had only one entrance, but inside, the Beastman Warriors had dug out a dense network of smaller caves.
With the exception of the witch, any tribe member who wanted a small cave had to pay a certain amount of food to have the tribe’s Half beastmen or Beastman Warriors help dig one. But...
During the great rainy season, when tribe members had trouble even filling their own stomachs, how could they possibly have any extra food to pay for digging a cave?
So, the common tribe members all spread thick layers of dry grass in the deeper parts of the large cave to ward off the damp. Better-off families could even bring out a few Beast Skins to protect against the cold.
Those with stronger fighters in their family could naturally secure a spot even deeper inside.
As for the slaves, if there was still space, they could huddle near the cave entrance. If there was no room left in the large cave, they had to search the back mountain on their own for natural caves to shelter from the rain.
Natural caves were very small, and they would have to search for a long time in the rain just to find one. Many slaves couldn’t find shelter at all and would end up freezing to death.
But even for the slaves who managed to find a small cave, their lives were not guaranteed. During the great rainy season, starvation claimed more lives than the cold.
Wu Yue followed Grandma Hua Shu into the large cave. Its entrance was wide enough for two Beastman Warriors to walk through side-by-side.
To her surprise, passing through the narrow entrance revealed an enormous cavern, shaped like a large-bellied bottle laid on its side.
The cavern was very high. Looking up from the bottom, she could see another opening at the very top. Directly below it, a small pool had been dug into the ground.
The pool was still a little damp, likely because it had rained in the last few days.
"This is the pool the males dug. Rain falls from the opening above.
Before we had this pool, the rain would get everywhere, soaking our dry grass, Beast Skins, and even our food.
Now, with this pool, the falling rain doesn’t get anything wet, and we can even drink it. The tribe members no longer have to brave the rain to fetch water."
’Brave the rain to fetch water?’
Wu Yue glanced at the opening overhead. "You could probably drink the water just by standing here with your mouth open."
But Grandma Hua Shu shot her an irritated glare. "It gets very cold during the great rainy season. Beast Skins and dry grass are precious. What would we do if they got wet?"
Wu Yue really wanted to say, ’Running around naked isn’t exactly a strange sight around here, is it?’
Grandma Hua Shu immediately added, "If you get soaked by the rain without wearing Beast Skins or dry grass, you’ll get sick easily. And medicinal herbs are very precious."
Wu Yue: "..."
’So the only ones who go out to fetch water are the super-strong beasts, then?’
’Alright, then. In this day and age, rule one is don’t run out of food, and rule two is don’t get sick.’
"Look, your cave is next to ours, on the second level, near the center."
Wu Yue’s scalp prickled the moment she heard "second level."
But when she looked where Grandma Hua Shu was pointing, she let out a sigh of relief.
’All I can say is, the Beastman Warriors are incredibly thoughtful. They actually carved stairs into the cave wall.’
