Surviving the apocalypse with a wife and a system! [GL]
Chapter 90: Eating.
Yan Cijin quickly nodded and replied, "Thank you." She slid the straw into her Wahaha drink and took a small sip first, then began eating her little cake. Her movements were neat and calm, and even in this kind of ugly situation, she still looked graceful. On the other side of the room, the four people were staring hard at Bai Li and Yan Cijin with eyes full of envy. They had already complained earlier about not knowing whose water cups had been left in the office, but that was before hunger and thirst really started biting at them. Now they were all desperate. Their throats were dry, their mouths felt sticky, and they were fighting over even the smallest amount of water like people on the edge of collapse. Lin Da was the first to move. He grabbed a cup that had some cooled tea left inside, and he did not even care what it was anymore. He just lifted it up and gulped it down in one go, emptying the whole cup in no time at all. The others did the same. Zhang Fan managed to get half a cup of water, and he drank it like his life depended on it. His lips had cracked from thirst, and when he swallowed, he could even taste something a little metallic in the water, but he still kept drinking. Peng Xiao and the female patient Wu Xiaoyu also found a glass with about half a bottle of water left, and the two of them drank it from a distance, careful and fast, like they were afraid someone else would snatch it away from them. In a normal situation, there should have been plenty of cups and bottles in a doctorβs office, but this was not a normal situation at all. They had already had several fights here, and a lot of things on the desk had been knocked over, including the water cups. So after the three of them finished what they had just found, there was nothing else left in the room that could even be called drinkable. Having gone through the life and death mess from yesterday, Zhang Fanβs mind had changed a lot too. He still had a bag of biscuits that he had taken from Wang Bo, and in the past he probably would have shared some of them with Peng Xiao and Wu Xiaoyu. But now he would not do that. He had learned his lesson. When things got this ugly, it was best to watch out for yourself first. If you did not protect yourself, no one else would do it for you. So Zhang Fan opened the bag and swallowed the biscuits whole, barely chewing. Lin Da also had a few chocolates that he had found earlier in the office, and he ate them quietly without saying a word. Out of the four people on that side, only Peng Xiao and Wu Xiaoyu had nothing in their hands now. The two of them squatted in a corner, looking miserable and hungry, but they did not dare ask Zhang Fan or Lin Da for anything. Nobody wanted to look weak in a room like this, and nobody wanted to be the one begging while everyone else stayed guarded. Bai Li did not feel anything special about their behavior. In the apocalypse, if you did not get stronger, then no one could save you. That was just how it worked. Someone might save you once, maybe twice if they were feeling generous, but nobody could save you every single time. Her gaze fell on Yan Cijin, who was eating small bites of bread with a quiet and careful manner. Even though her clothes looked a little messy after everything they had been through, the way she ate was still very proper. Her face was still as beautiful and elegant as before, which made her stand out even more in this dirty and messy room. Bai Li kept looking at her for a moment longer than she meant to, and Yan Cijin, noticing that look, smiled slightly back at her. That soft, charming smile hit Bai Li so suddenly that she immediately looked away, feeling a little nervous for reasons she could not fully explain. Yan Cijin, seeing Bai Li turn her face away, finally breathed out in relief. Being stared at like that by Bai Li had made her feel strangely shy, and that was not like her at all. It made her uncomfortable in a way that was almost sweet, but she did not want to think too much about that right now. So she pushed those messy thoughts away and quickly finished the rest of the cake in her hand.
A dozen minutes later, Yan Cijin had finally finished her breakfast, while Bai Li was already standing by the window and looking out at the hospital area. She was trying to judge the situation outside. At first, she was not sure whether it was just her imagination, but after taking a good look around, she felt like there were much fewer zombies near the hospital this morning than there had been yesterday. The difference was actually pretty clear if you looked carefully. Bai Li thought that maybe the interdimensional market had disappeared, and because of that, the zombies that had been hanging around the hospital building had drifted away too. That would be a good thing for her and Yan Cijin if they wanted to escape, but she still did not let herself relax. She knew better than to trust a scene that looked safe at first glance. Her hand was still injured, and that alone would affect the strength of her attacks if she had to fight more zombies on the way out. Yan Cijin walked over to Bai Li and asked her in a low voice, "Whatβs wrong?" Bai Li did not turn away from the window. Instead, she took out her binoculars and looked outside. There were no pedestrians on the road at all now.
