Teaming Up with My Enemy to Rule the Apocalypse
Chapter 83: I Want to Live Like a Person
Initially, Charlotte Morgan was resolute.
But after hearing what Jayce said, she began to hesitate.
Of course, she wanted to become stronger.
But she wanted to live even more.
’If I die while awakening a Superpower, then why would I even want to awaken one?’
Seeing Charlotte Morgan’s resolve waver, Sierra Sullivan also spoke up softly, "We’ll support you if you want to awaken a Superpower, of course, but there’s no need to take such a risk. The person who gave you this idea was probably just guessing. You can’t take something like that at face value!"
"That’s impossible!" Charlotte immediately retorted. "It’s not a guess! They’ve experimented—"
Before she could finish, Charlotte covered her mouth, her face filled with regret.
Though Charlotte had only said one unfinished sentence, Sierra and the others already understood.
’Someone is running experiments!’
’Experiments on Superpower awakening!’
’But those kinds of experiments... they use human subjects!’
’And with any experiment, there are successes... and failures.’
’The successful ones awaken Superpowers.’
’But what about the failures?’
’The best-case scenario is that they simply don’t awaken a Superpower.’
But...
It wasn’t that Sierra was pessimistic.
She just wasn’t that naive.
Who knew how long these experiments had been going on, but they had probably already claimed many victims.
Their base wasn’t huge, but it wasn’t exactly small, either.
So many buildings.
Combined with the difficulty of travel, each building was like an isolated island. Routine contact relied entirely on walkie-talkies.
’But could you trust everything you heard over the walkie-talkie?’
Kevin Everett’s gaze was piercing as he stared fixedly at Charlotte Morgan. "If you want to remain in the Everett Family, if you want to remain my daughter-in-law, you will tell me everything, from beginning to end. If you choose to stay silent, you can leave right now!"
Hearing this, Charlotte Morgan’s expression instantly turned to panic.
"Dad! I’m not leaving!"
Charlotte wasn’t a fool.
On the contrary, she could be quite sharp when she needed to be.
She knew full well that if she left the Everett Family now, her quality of life would plummet.
Just surviving would become a struggle, let alone enjoying her current life with plentiful food and her own private room.
’There was no way she was leaving the Everett Family!’
"I’ll talk!" Charlotte said, her eyes welling with tears. "I’ll tell you everything right now!"
Tim Everett shot Charlotte an irritated look. "If you’re going to talk, then get on with it! Don’t waste our time!" 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
Sierra subconsciously glanced at Tim.
’What he really means is, ’don’t drag me into this,’’ she thought.
Charlotte hastily wiped the tears from her face, took a deep breath, and began to speak slowly.
"I only overheard it! A couple of days ago, at the trading market in the underground garage, I heard some people talking about awakening Superpowers. They said they’d run experiments on many people and concluded that using a higher-level Crystal Core would awaken a rarer, more powerful Superpower."
Kevin Everett frowned. "Why would they say all that?"
"He said... they could help people awaken Superpowers for free..."
Charlotte’s expression grew complicated, her thoughts unreadable.
"I was tempted, but... I figured our family should have Crystal Cores, so I wouldn’t need their help. I didn’t want to owe anyone a favor, so I turned them down..."
Charlotte didn’t say any more, but her face was filled with relief.
Clearly, Charlotte now understood that something was very wrong.
There’s no such thing as a free lunch.
There wasn’t before, and there certainly isn’t now.
’Why on earth would those people help others awaken Superpowers for free?’
’It must be because there’s something in it for them!’
’So where did they get their test subjects?’
’They were tricked, of course!’
’She had been so close to falling for it!’
’If she had really gone with them, what would have happened to her?’
’Would she have successfully awakened a Superpower, or...’
The more Charlotte thought about it, the more frightened she became, and her face grew pale.
Seeing her like this, Kevin Everett snorted but said nothing.
Tim Everett, however, looked like he was about to explode and shot to his feet.
"You! How could you?! This is huge! Why didn’t you say something the moment you got back?"
"Do you have any idea how many people could die because you kept this to yourself?"
"You... you woman! You’re so unbelievably shortsighted! I’ve never met anyone like you!"
"If it weren’t for the two kids, I’d be done with you right now!"
After railing at Charlotte, Tim Everett quickly turned to Kevin Everett.
"Dad! This has nothing to do with me, I swear! I really didn’t know!"
"If I’d known, I would’ve told you right away!"
"Dad, you can’t blame me for this!"
"Enough!"
Kevin Everett cut him off coldly. "No one asked you, and no one is blaming you! Now shut your mouth!"
Being rebuked so coldly by his father didn’t upset Tim Everett in the slightest.
On the contrary, he was greatly relieved.
’At least this meant his father wasn’t mad at him!’
’As for Charlotte?’
’Who gives a damn about her!’
The sight of the couple gave Kevin Everett a headache. He waved a hand at them irritably. "Alright! There’s nothing for you two here. Go back to your room!"
That was all Tim Everett needed to hear. He immediately shot up and strode toward their room without so much as a second glance at Charlotte.
Charlotte, however, didn’t stand up right away. Her expression had become even more serious than before.
"Dad, I want to awaken a Superpower!"
’She was truly sick of this wretched, half-life!’
’Originally, she’d hoped to rely on Tim.’
’But after all this time, Tim was still just drifting through life, wasting his days in a drunken stupor with no intention of bettering himself.’
’Since she couldn’t count on Tim, she would have to count on herself!’
’If she could become a Superpower User, her life would be so much better than it was now!’
Kevin Everett frowned slightly. "Are you sure? There’s only a chance you’ll succeed in awakening a Superpower. If you fail... you know what that means, don’t you?"
For a split second, Charlotte’s face turned deathly pale.
But just as quickly, her expression hardened with resolve.
"I know."
"Even if I fail and end up dying, I... I can’t go on like this."
"I want to live like a human being."
Sierra looked at Charlotte in surprise. She truly hadn’t expected to hear such words from her.
’Goes to show you can’t judge a book by its cover.’
’People really can change.’
’If Charlotte could really awaken a Superpower, it would be a good thing for her and for her two children.’
"Since you’ve made up your mind." Kevin Everett nodded. "Fine. When do you want to do it?"
