A mechanical voice could be heard in John’s mind."Are you okay?" Laura asked, her voice soft but filled with concern.

John uttered "We need to go, Laura. Now. Get into your car," he said, his voice tense, but not explaining the system’s message.

Laura’s face scrunched up in confusion. She wasn’t one to question John’s instincts, but something about the sudden change in atmosphere made her uneasy. The air felt thicker, almost as if danger itself lingered just out of sight. A chill ran down her spine as if the wind carried a hidden message she couldn’t quite understand.

John slipped into his Rolls Royce Phantom, tightening his grip on the steering wheel as he fastened his seatbelt. He glanced over at Laura, who sat beside him in her sleek Mercedes, her hands firmly on the wheel.

Laura revved the engine, signalling she was ready to move, and John fired up his own engine. With a nod, they pulled out onto the busy streets of Greenland City, heading toward their separate destinations.

Laura took the lead, her Benz smoothly cutting through traffic like a sleek panther stalking its prey. John followed closely behind, like a bodyguard keeping an eye on her from a distance.

The streets were busy with the usual city rush—pedestrians hurrying to their destinations, food vendors on the corners, and cyclists weaving between cars. The early evening sun bathed the city in a warm glow, but John could hardly focus on the bustling activity around them.

John’s mind drifted to Grace. His fiancée had been on his mind lately, especially with the strange warnings from the system. He grabbed his phone and quickly dialled her number, hoping to hear her voice and ensure she was safe. After a few rings, Grace picked up, her tone light and playful as usual.

"Hey, you! Are you finally done conquering the world for today?" Grace teased, her laughter ringing in John’s ears.

John smiled despite the tension he felt. "Grace, listen to me," he said, his voice serious but soft. "I need you to stay in your room until I get there, okay? Don’t leave the house, don’t answer any calls from unknown numbers, and turn off your phone’s location services. Just trust me on this."

Grace’s laughter faded, replaced by concern. "What’s going on, John? Are you in trouble?"

"Nothing I can’t handle, but I need to know you’re safe. Promise me you’ll follow what I said."

There was a pause on the other end before Grace responded, her voice quieter now. "Alright, I promise. But you better come home soon and explain everything. Don’t keep me waiting."

"I will," John assured her. "I love you. Just be safe."

"I love you too. Stay sharp out there," Grace replied, and with that, John ended the call, feeling a small sense of relief.

But that relief was short-lived. As they approached the highway, two black Lamborghini Aventadors screeched to a halt in front of them, blocking their path. Laura slammed on her brakes, her car coming to an abrupt stop. John did the same, his heart pounding in his chest.

Three men, tall and muscular, dressed in all black, stepped out of the Lamborghinis. Their faces were obscured by dark sunglasses and black bandanas, giving them a menacing, faceless appearance. They walked toward Laura’s car with a cold, calculated precision. One of the men signalled for Laura to get out.

Laura, never one to back down, got out of her car and stood tall, her voice sharp and authoritative. "Who the hell do you think you are, blocking my way? What do you want?"

Before she could say another word, one of the men stepped forward and delivered a harsh slap to her face, sending her crashing to the ground.

John’s heart stopped for a moment as he watched Laura fall. His eyes widened with fury, and something deep within him stirred—a dormant power from the system, ready to awaken.

John’s eyes began to glow faintly, the system activating his combat instincts. He wanted to fight, wanted to protect Laura, but an internal voice—one that wasn’t his own—echoed in his mind. ’Don’t engage. They have stronger weapons. They are prepared for you.’

John clenched his fists, frustrated but understanding the warning. With a heavy sigh, he stepped out of his car and raised his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay. I’m not fighting. Just leave her alone."

The men grabbed both John and Laura, roughly pushing them into one of the black Lamborghinis. As they were shoved into the backseat, their wrists were bound with thick metal chains that John knew he couldn’t break. They were trapped.

The car sped off, and John felt the panic rising within him. "Where are you taking us? What is wrong, baddie?" he demanded, his voice cutting through the silence like a knife.

Instead of an answer, one of the men in the front seat reached back and struck John across the head with a metal rod, the sharp clang of metal against bone ringing in his ears. John winced, his head throbbing with drops of blood oozing out, but he remained defiant. "Answer me! Who are you?"

Another blow followed, this time to his shoulder, sending waves of pain down his arm. The car, speeding down the road, hit a pothole, causing John and Laura to jerk violently in their seats. "Ow! Damn! Are you trying to abduct us or kill us?" John muttered sarcastically, trying to inject some humour into the pain-filled situation.

Laura, despite the fear and pain, couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle. "They need driving lessons. I mean, who kidnaps people and drives like they’re in a bumper car race?"

One of the men turned around and glared at her, brandishing the metal rod as if ready to strike, but stopped when Laura shot him a daring glare. "Hit me again, and I swear I’ll haunt you," she said, her voice dripping with venom.

John, trying to stay calm, leaned closer to her. "Laura, maybe we shouldn’t provoke the guys with the rods," he whispered, his tone half-joking. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Another jolt shook the car as they swerved around a sharp corner, and John was slammed against the side of the car. "Great! We’re being kidnapped by maniacs who can’t drive," he groaned, rubbing his head.

"Yeah, this is really top-notch service," Laura quipped, "Do we at least get snacks with this abduction? Maybe a complimentary drink?"

Another smack of the rod hit John on the back, cutting off any further attempts at humour. "Shut up!" one of the men barked. The cold, metallic voice of their captors added to the tension in the air.

John, gritting his teeth, tried again, "Where are you taking us?"

Again, silence. Another blow landed, this time on Laura, who hissed in pain but stayed strong. "Really? This is your answer? Just hit people when they ask questions? You guys are great conversationalists," she said dryly.

The men remained silent, their stoic, emotionless demeanour only amplifying the fear that gnawed at John. Every attempt he made to understand their captors’ motives was met with violence.

The car jerked again, and John couldn’t resist a final jab. "If this is your job, I can tell you right now, you’re going to get some terrible Yelp reviews. One star for customer service."

Laura bit her lip, trying not to laugh despite the situation. Even in the face of danger, John’s sarcasm was relentless.

But the humour faded quickly as reality settled back in. They were bound, blindfolded, and speeding toward an unknown destination with no way of knowing what awaited them.

"System," John thought desperately, hoping for an answer. "Help me out here. We need to get out of this mess."

[The Host must remain alert. The system is assessing the situation.]

"Not the time for vague advice," John muttered under his breath.

Another violent turn threw them against the car doors, and the painful silence between the blows hung over them like a dark cloud.

Laura finally whispered, "John, what do we do?"

John didn’t have an answer. The pain throbbed through his body, his mind racing. There had to be a way out. There had to be a way to turn the tide. But for now, they were trapped, held in the grip of ruthless captors who seemed to enjoy every moment of their torment.

The oppressive silence in the car, punctuated only by the occasional rough jolt or a sharp blow from the metal rods, weighed heavily on John and Laura. Each time John tried to speak, to ask where they were going or what their captors wanted, he was met with nothing but silence and violence. It was clear these men weren’t interested in talking.

John’s mind raced, searching for any possible escape, but the chains around his wrists were tight, and the blindfold prevented him from seeing anything that might give him an advantage. He could only sense the twists and turns of the road as the car sped toward an unknown destination.

The minutes felt like hours. His body ached from the blows, and Laura was in no better shape. Despite her tough exterior, John could tell she was struggling to keep her composure. She was strong, but even the strongest people could only take so much.

The car hit another bump and lost control, sending them both flying against the hard surfaces of the back seat. Would John have the advantage?
