"There’s no need. A doctor in the army already looked at it. I just need to change the dressing on schedule."

Daya nodded, but her gaze remained fixed on his arm.

Gu Kai Zhi’s eyes glinted. "Do you want to see it?"

Daya hesitated for a moment. "Can I?"

"Of course."

Gu Kai Zhi slowly unbuttoned his shirt.

The moment she saw Gu Kai Zhi’s chest, Daya’s face turned red. She instantly regretted asking to see the wound.

They were the only two people in the room, and Daya stood there, feeling awkward and unsure of what to do.

Gu Kai Zhi watched Daya’s expression closely. Seeing her avert her gaze, not daring to look directly at him, the corners of his mouth lifted into a smile.

He exposed his injured arm. "See? It’s already been bandaged."

Daya looked up at the gauze-wrapped arm. Gu Kai Zhi’s arms weren’t soft flesh; they looked powerful. Even his abdomen was sculpted into defined blocks. This was the first time Daya had ever looked directly at a man’s body. Not only was her face red, but her heart was also pounding.

Seeing her reaction, Gu Kai Zhi was afraid he might have scared her, so he put his shirt back on.

Only then did Daya remember she had come to deliver breakfast.

"My aunt woke up early to make these buns, and there’s porridge too. It’s still hot. You should eat. I’m leaving now."

Daya wanted to leave right away, but Gu Kai Zhi wasn’t about to let her go so easily.

"An Xin."

Daya turned her head. "Huh?"

Gu Kai Zhi looked at her and said, "Wait for me. I’ll finish eating quickly, and then I’ll walk you over."

Daya waved her hands. "There’s no need. My work is very close by. I can just walk."

Gu Kai Zhi looked at her. "I’ll walk you."

Seeing his insistence, Daya had no choice but to nod.

"Have a seat. I eat fast."

Gu Kai Zhi did indeed eat quickly, yet he didn’t seem rushed. ’He really is from the army,’ Daya marveled inwardly. ’Even the way he eats looks so serious.’

He finished in just a few bites and then went to wash the bowl. Daya had wanted to say she would wash it when she got back, but Gu Kai Zhi had already finished and even wrapped it up for her.

Gu Kai Zhi threw on a jacket. "Let’s go."

The two of them left the hotel and walked toward the supermarket. They didn’t speak the whole way.

When they reached the supermarket entrance, Gu Kai Zhi finally said to Daya, "I’ll wait for you to get off work."

Daya quickly shook her head. "You don’t have to."

Gu Kai Zhi repeated, "I’ll wait for you."

Seeing how serious he was, Daya had to nod. She took a few steps inside, then turned to look back. Gu Kai Zhi was still standing there, watching her.

Daya’s gaze flickered, and she turned and hurried into the supermarket.

Gu Kai Zhi watched Daya go inside, then suddenly looked up and saw He Lang standing at a third-floor window, looking down.

Gu Kai Zhi waved at him. Since he had been seen, He Lang beckoned for him to come up.

Gu Kai Zhi had been here before, so he navigated to the third floor with ease, found He Lang’s office, and knocked on the door.

A voice came from inside. "It’s unlocked."

Gu Kai Zhi walked in.

"Brother He."

He Lang looked at Gu Kai Zhi. "When did you get to Beijing City?"

"Yesterday afternoon."

He Lang raised an eyebrow. "You just arrived yesterday afternoon, and you’re already here looking for my niece? Don’t tell me you came here specifically for this?"

Gu Kai Zhi’s expression shifted slightly, and he sat down in the chair opposite He Lang.

"I did come here specially for her."

Faced with such frankness, He Lang found himself at a loss for words.

"Do you really like my Daya?"

"Yes." Gu Kai Zhi admitted it without hesitation.

"You two haven’t even met that many times, have you? What do you like about her? Her looks?"

Gu Kai Zhi replied, "It’s just a feeling. You can see some people every day and feel nothing, but with others, even a single meeting can be unforgettable. An Xin is undeniably beautiful, and I won’t deny that I’m attracted to her appearance."

He Lang looked at him. "What if I don’t approve?"

Gu Kai Zhi paused. "For what reason?"

He Lang said directly, "Because you’re a soldier. While we all admire soldiers, it’s also a fact that your lives are always on the line. Besides, being an army wife is hard. I don’t want Daya to have such a difficult life."

Gu Kai Zhi mulled it over for a moment before saying, "I understand your concerns. But I will respect An Xin’s choice. I will explain all of this to her beforehand. If she refuses, I’ll respect her decision. But if she is willing, I hope you all can accept me."

Since Gu Kai Zhi had put it that way, He Lang nodded.

"To be honest, I have mixed feelings. My wife is very optimistic about you two, but you know as well as I do how much of Daya’s fondness for you stems from her gratitude for what you did for our family. She’s still young, with little experience of the world, and she’s naive when it comes to romance. Gratitude and affection are two different things."

Gu Kai Zhi’s eyes darkened slightly. He knew in his heart that He Lang had a point.

"We soldiers have a way of locking onto a goal and striving for it without giving up. I still want to try, but I won’t force her."

He Lang trusted Gu Kai Zhi’s character.

"Alright."

Then he added, "Come to our house for dinner tonight. I’ll call my older brother and the others over."

Gu Kai Zhi nodded. "Sounds good."

Gu Kai Zhi stood up. "Where is An Xin’s office?"

He Lang clicked his tongue, looking at Gu Kai Zhi’s determined expression. He huffed, "Second door on the right when you go out."

Gu Kai Zhi gave He Lang a smile and left.

In Daya’s office, Xue Xingjun was talking to her—or rather, prying for information.

"I heard you left with a strange man yesterday. Who was he?"

Daya was looking down, handling her work. She looked up at him in surprise. "Where did you hear that? Who’s got such a big mouth?"

Xue Xingjun went TSK TSK. "I’m just concerned about you. You still haven’t said who the man was." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"What’s it to you? Stop being so nosy, you’re just a kid."

Xue Xingjun said indignantly, "Hey, what kind of thing is that to say? We’re about the same age!"

Daya shot him a contemptuous glance. "Then can you go do some real work? Get out and do your job, don’t distract me from mine."

Xue Xingjun stood up and pointed a finger at Daya. "Liu Daya, you’re really something! You’re only nice when you need a favor. Don’t come asking me to run errands for you anymore."

Daya ignored him.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK— A knock came at the door.

They both looked toward the door. Xue Xingjun went and opened it to find a man he had never seen before standing outside.

"Who are you looking for?"

Gu Kai Zhi glanced at Xue Xingjun, then leaned to the side to look inside.

"An Xin."

"Brother Gu."

When Daya saw it was Gu Kai Zhi, she quickly stood up.

Xue Xingjun stared at Gu Kai Zhi in surprise.

Gu Kai Zhi walked past him into the room.

"Brother Gu, what are you doing up here?"

Gu Kai Zhi surveyed the office and said with a smile, "Your uncle told me to come up."

"My uncle?"

"Mhm."

Daya poured Gu Kai Zhi a glass of water. "Brother Gu, please, have a seat. I don’t have any tea here, so you’ll have to make do with water."

Gu Kai Zhi smiled. "You go on with your work. I just dropped by to see you."
