Chapter 350: Chapter 350: Meeting Kai

Maya felt pride bloom in her chest, not entirely her own. Her wolf was pleased. Satisfied with the hunt and the praise from the Alphas.

Can we run more? Maya asked. Please? I want to.....I need to....

Run, Damian finished. Yes. That’s what tonight is for. Run with us, Maya. Let your wolf stretch her legs properly.

They ran.

Through the forest, across the estate grounds, under the moonlight. Maya had never felt anything like it, the absolute freedom of movement, the power in her muscles, the wind in her fur.

This was what she’d been missing her entire human life. This sense of belonging to something wild and ancient and absolutely right.

Hours later, when they finally returned to the estate and shifted back to human form, Maya collapsed on the grass, naked and exhausted and absolutely exhilarated.

"That was incredible," she breathed. "I can’t believe.....that was...."

"That was your first shift," Eve said, appearing with robes for all of them. "And you did amazingly. Most new wolves can barely walk their first time. You hunted and ran for hours."

"I feel like I could run forever." Maya accepted the robe gratefully. "Is it always like that?"

"The first shift is always the most intense. But yes—shifting and running as wolf feels incredible every time." Damian pulled on his own robe. "Welcome to the pack, Maya. Officially. Completely."

Maya felt tears prick her eyes. "Thank you. All of you. For accepting me. For helping me through this."

"You’re family," Silas said simply. "That’s what family does."

Later, back in her room, Maya stared at herself in the mirror.

She looked different. Not physically, she was still herself. But there was something in her eyes. Something wild and confident that hadn’t been there before.

She was pack now.

She was wolf.

And it felt like coming home.

The morning after her first shift, Maya woke feeling like she’d been hit by a truck.

Every muscle in her body ached. Her bones felt like they’d been broken and reassembled, which, technically, they had. And she was starving in a way she’d never experienced before.

She stumbled downstairs to find the kitchen already occupied by several pack members, including a man she didn’t recognize.

He was tall, maybe six-two with dark brown hair that fell just past his shoulders and warm hazel eyes. Muscular but lean, like a runner rather than a bodybuilder. He looked to be in his late twenties, and when he turned to look at her, Maya felt something in her chest skip.

Not the mate bond. She knew what that looked like from watching Eve with her Alphas. This was different. Simpler. Just... attraction.

"You must be Maya," the stranger said, his voice a pleasant baritone. "I’m Kai. epsilon rank. I’ve been away visiting family for the past few months. Just got back last night and heard we had a new wolf."

Maya became acutely aware that she was wearing pajamas and probably looked like death. "That’s me. New wolf. First shift was last night."

Kai’s smile was warm and genuine. "Congratulations. How are you feeling?"

"Like I got run over by a semi truck."

He laughed. "Yeah, first shift is brutal. The soreness will fade in a day or two. In the meantime....." He pulled out a chair at the kitchen table. "Sit. You need protein. Lots of it. Shifting burns insane amounts of calories."

Maya sat gratefully, and Kai moved to the stove where he began cooking what looked like enough food to feed a small army.

"You don’t have to...." Maya started.

"I want to. Taking care of new pack members is kind of my thing." He glanced back at her. "I’m the pack’s unofficial welcome committee. Help new wolves integrate, teach them the ropes, make sure they don’t accidentally challenge an Alpha out of ignorance."

"That’s a thing that happens?"

"More often than you’d think." Kai slid a plate piled high with eggs, bacon, and toast in front of her. "Eat. I’ll answer questions while you do."

Maya didn’t need to be told twice. She dug in, and the first bite tasted so good she actually moaned.

Kai grinned. "Enhanced taste is one of the perks. Everything tastes better as a wolf. Wait until you try chocolate. Life-changing."

"I already loved chocolate," Maya managed around a mouthful of eggs.

"Trust me. Wolf-enhanced chocolate appreciation is on another level entirely." 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

They fell into easy conversation while Maya ate. Kai explained pack protocols, training schedules, the social dynamics between different ranks. He was patient and funny and completely non-judgmental about Maya’s thousand questions.

"So epsilon rank," Maya said eventually. "What does that mean exactly?"

"Fifth tier. Below Alphas, Betas, Deltas, and Gammas. Above Zetas and Omegas." Kai leaned against the counter. "I’m essentially middle management. Help coordinate pack activities, assist with training, that sort of thing."

"And you like it?"

"I do. I’m not interested in climbing the hierarchy. Don’t want the responsibility that comes with Beta or Delta positions. Epsilon suits me.....enough authority to be useful, not so much that it consumes my life." He paused. "What about you? What are you interested in?"

"I don’t know yet," Maya admitted. "Everything’s still so new. I’m just trying to figure out how to exist as a wolf, let alone what I want to do with it."

"That’s fair. You’ve got time to figure it out." Kai’s expression turned thoughtful. "Though if you’re interested, I could use an assistant. Someone to help coordinate pack training schedules and activities. It’s not glamorous, but it would give you purpose while you’re adjusting. Help you get to know the pack better."

Maya considered it. Having something useful to do sounded infinitely better than just wandering around the estate trying not to accidentally shift when she got emotional.

"I’d like that," she said. "Thank you."

"Great. We can start whenever you’re ready. No rush." Kai pushed off the counter. "For now, finish eating. Then you should probably sleep. Your body needs rest to finish healing from the shift."

Over the next few weeks, Maya fell into a routine.

Mornings were spent training with Brynn....learning combat techniques, practicing controlled shifts, building the muscle memory that would make being wolf feel natural.

Afternoons she worked with Kai, learning pack administration and coordination. He was patient and encouraging, and Maya found herself looking forward to their time together.
