Chapter 456: 456: Loophole

The class began some minutes after Instructor Valdin calmed down.

It was a class on chaos runes, and normally, Simon would be interested in the class, but he was absent-minded this time around.

Even his classmates were distracted, and Sunless who was sitting beside him seemed to be lost in her thoughts too.

Instructor Valdin noticed all of these, and he had to bring back the attention of his students to his class multiple times.

It was frustrating, but it was the consequences of him telling Simon about his mission before the class and not after the class.

Once the class ended, Instructor Valdin told Simon another worrying information.

He had to meet up with his teammates at the academy entrance and depart for the mission once school was over.

Simon was stunned when Valdin told him this.

He thought the mission would take place in days or even weeks and he would be given time to prepare since he was a first year and the ’reputation’ of the clan mattered.

When he told Valdin about this, the Velari told him that the mission was of utmost importance and he had to leave with teammates as soon as possible.

Simon called bullshit on this.

He knew that the reason why he was not given any time is so that he would not find a way to avoid the mission or be properly prepared for it.

Simon had no idea what Caesar’s true goal was, but it would not be surprising if it was for him to die.

And since Caesar wanted him to die, then why would he allow him to be prepared?

However, the more Simon thought about it, the more questions he had as to why Caesar wanted to kill him in this manner.

Once again, he was a slave, and because of his status in the clan, the members of Caesar’s factions had made attempts to end his life multiple times.

If they wanted to kill him, they could just send someone that was too powerful for him to defeat.

They could even send a Greater Demon, and he would be a helpless chicken before the demon.

So, why go through all this stress just to kill him.

It felt just like the time he was forced to a life and death duel with Blackblade.

And because of this déjà vu he was having, he began to wonder what Caesar could benefit from him participating in the mission aside from his death.

Unknown to Simon, the main reason why no Greater Demon had ever tried to kill Simon aside from the First Blade is because of Ormon.

Ormon had threatened nearly all the Greater Demons in the academy and clan that if they should ever kill Simon, he would kill them and their offsprings or disciples.

That was one of the benefits Simon got for being one of Ormon’s disciples.

If not because of Ormon, Caesar would have sent out a Greater Demon to kill Simon ever since Simon started exposing the illegal activities his factions had been doing.

That cost him a lot.

As for sending Supreme Archfiends to assassinate Simon?

Simon was now a force to be reckoned with, and only the truly talented Supreme Archfiends could face Simon.

And many of these Supreme Archfiends had no desire to try and assassinate or battle a mere Fiend.

If Simon knew of their thoughts, he would call each and every single one of them foolish.

After Instructor Valdin told him this information, he stood up and left the class under the strange gazes of his classmates.

Sunless stretched out her hand slightly and she wanted to say something, but she couldn’t.

There was nothing she could do other than watch Simon leave.

After Simon left the class, he sent a message to Ormon, telling him about the mission.

He hoped that Ormon would be able to help in some way or give him some useful information.

After doing that, he went to the Intelligence Office to try and buy information on his mission.

Normally, he should have gone to the administrative department to request for details about his mission for free of charge, but he was certain that Caesar would find a way to make things difficult for him.

He would not be surprised if the demons working at the administrative department would not allow him to obtain the details of his mission and would tell him to meet his ’teammates’ instead for the details.

Instead of going through all of that, he went to the Intelligence Office.

However, Caesar was a step ahead of him.

"The details of my mission cost about three hundred thousand merits? And because I’m a slave, it’s going to cost me nine hundred thousand merits?"

Simon’s lips could not help but twitch repeatedly as he looked at the demonness who was attending to him in the Intelligence Office.

Simon wanted to say so many things but he knew that it would not change the outcome.

Caesar had gotten ahead of him, and even with his current wealth, he could not pay three hundred merits for a mere information, talk less of nine hundred thousand merits.

He left the Intelligence Office with a slightly frustrated expression beneath his mask.

And unfortunately for him, his day just kept on getting worse.

He received a message from Ormon who told him that he could not find anything about his mission through his sources.

Ormon was also given a compulsory mission, and the goal of this mission was obvious.

To remove his backer and prevent the Raksha from interfering in Caesar’s plans.

Normally, Ormon could have refused the mission with his authority in the clan.

However, Ormon had found a loophole in the rules of the clan and academy, and he always used this loophole to avoid many of the missions assigned to him.

Because of the power he possessed, the clan never punished him.

But now?

They were punishing him by giving him a mission he could not refuse.
