Chapter 135: 12.1 The spine-less doctor

When A-Xuan opened his eyes, he was in a big office. A man was sitting behind a desk and in front of it, were multiple people. Half of them had medical coats on. A-Xuan blinked to receive this world’s information.

The body was 22 years old, known as Idris. Idris came from a long line of physicians and pharmacists.

His father owned the biggest hospital in A City and had a pharmaceutical company. Idris had always been passionate about those two fields, so he followed in his father and grandfather’s footsteps.

He had an MD and a Ph.D. During the week he would work at the hospital and on the weekend he worked in the development and research laboratory.

Idris worked with his two childhood best friends. Both Naethan and Maddox were in the medical field as well.

Naethan was a medical admissions clerk and Maddox was a doctor. Idris was in love with Naethan, but he never confessed for fear of losing him.

Naethan knew he loved him, so he confessed to Idris first, even if he didn’t feel the same way.

Naethan knew that with Idris’ high status, he would be able to enter high society, which had always been his dream. He already hated the fact that he had failed medical school twice.

He worked just as hard as his two best friends, but he was never able to earn his doctorate.

Idris thought that Naethan loved him too, so he was delighted, and brought him to every one of his events.

Two months into their relationship, when Naethan started to get accepted, there was an outbreak. Two viruses started to circulate, including the zombie virus.

The three of them decided to join the Uni base, who was built around their old university.

On their way there, both Naethan and Maddox’s abilities awoke. Naethan had a healing ability and Maddox had a water ability.

When they arrived, the leader of the base Emerys, placed Idris and Naethan in the medical building, and Maddox in one of the scavenger teams.

Quickly, Idris’ relationship with Naethan drastically changed. Naethan felt like the power balance had shifted, and that he was above Idris now that he was an ability user, while he was just a mundane.

Mundane was the term used for those whose ability would never awaken. Naethan treated him like he was beneath him, and Idris would always do everything he asked.

Idris was blindly in love, accepting everything he said. Naethan thought that healers were better than actual doctors and physicians.

But doctors and physicians were still needed because of the two different viruses.

The side effect of the second virus could still be treated, and they could survive it, even if the person infected could still die, they could lessen his pain.

The healing ability had no effect on the virus, so only an actual doctor could treat the disease.

Being the most powerful healer, Naethan was named chief of the medical department. He made every doctor the assistant of a healer and Idris his.

As usual, Idris silently agreed, even if he felt like it was wrong. One day, Idris told Naethan that he had locked in a concrete volt all the equipment they would need to process a vaccine.

Because of the value of the equipment, he had them locked until they were established in their base. After examining the virus in the laboratory, Idris was sure he could make a vaccine.

Naethan asked him to write the formula just to see, and Idris wrote it down for him.

Naethan took the formula and told him not to tell anyone, and that he would talk to Emerys the leader of the base. He actually went to see Maddox to have Idris killed.

He could see Maddox’s animosity for Idris rising ever since they became a couple. He figured that he loved him and that he would do anything for him.

Maddox agreed and invited Idris and Naethan to their next scavenger mission, pretending they need his opinion on medical equipment.

Idris accepted, and they had him locked in an abandoned factory with 10 zombies. Naethan and Maddox used the fact that the ability users were fighting, to get rid of Idris.

By the time the ability users were done and opened the locked abandoned factory, Idris was already dead.

They all went back to the base and Naethan told Emerys on the way back that he knew the position of processing equipment for a vaccine, and that with it he would be able to create a vaccine for the second virus.

Emerys agreed and put Maddox as the leader of the scavengers team after Naethan asked him.

When they arrived in front of the vault, Maddox told everyone to guard the surrounding so only he and Naethan were present while he opened the vault.

He pulled out the eye of Idris he had gouged out in secret to pass the retinal scan, and the hand to pass the biometric lock.

Naethan knew they needed it since Idris told him about the vault’s security measures.

They went back to the Uni base with all the equipment, and Naethan used his power to force a few physicians to make vaccines secretly with Idris’ formula.

After the vaccine was done, he took credit for it and was hailed as a hero.

With all the resources the base received for selling the vaccine, Emerys gave him the highest status after his. Naethan and Maddox ended up together and lived happily.

A-Xuan opened his eyes and looked at Naethan. He had short brown hair with a round face. With his slanted eyes and small nose paired with thin lips, he could be considered handsome.

A-Xuan smiled. Naethan looked at Emerys and said:

"I think that for the medical department to be more efficient, every healer should have a doctor as his assistant."

Every doctor looked at him with anger. He wasn’t fooling anyone, since his arrival Naethan has been acting like he is better than them, just because he has a healing ability.

People still need doctors because of the second virus, since the healer’s ability has no effect on it.

Fifty percent of the sick are people who contracted the second virus, while the other half are wounded from scavenging missions.

So what, they should just give up on the rest? If the symptoms are treated early on the person can survive, so they shouldn’t just abandon them. A-Xuan couldn’t stop himself from laughing.

For the first time in his life Naethan feels like he is genuinely better than everyone so, of course, he’s going to do everything in his power to make them feel it.

He always felt like he was better than everyone else, he just didn’t have any power. But now that he does, he’ll wield it in everyone’s face.

If people have to die, then so be it. Everyone looked at A-Xuan surprised, his laugh was clearly a mocking one.

His attitude was somewhat condescending, when since they’d been at the Uni base, he would always do everything Naethan would say.

The doctors there thought that he could help make Naethan see reason since he’s a doctor too and his boyfriend, but they quickly understood that he’s just a fool in love.

Naethan was the most shocked, he told him his plan already and A-Xuan said it was a bad idea, but after coaxing him he agreed as usual. So right now, he can’t understand why he’s acting this way.

Emerys looked at A-Xuan. This is the first time he’s heard anything coming out of his mouth. He’s nothing more than Naethan’s accessory.

He’s useless, he knew of his family history when it comes to medicine, this is the biggest reason he accepted the three of them in the base, but he was utterly disappointed.

What surprised him, is how Naethan the person he did not expect anything from stepped up and managed to deal with the medical department. A-Xuan looked at Emerys with narrowed eyes.

His skin was fair and glowy. He had curly dark hair and a chiseled jawline. He had an aquiline nose and gold eyes. His gold eyes had specs of orange and red.

It looked like a fire, a beautiful fire. He knows what he is thinking, but the problem is that Emerys is a fighter, he knows nothing about medicine.

He thinks that Naethan does everything perfectly, just because every time his scavengers get hurt they’re healed.

The thing is that with Naethan’s iron hand, no one dares say to Emerys, all the people who died of the second virus.

The more time passed, the more Emerys’ impression of Naethan became better, and the doctors dared even less to talk to him.

They’re not just scared of Naethan they’re also scared of Emerys. He runs the Uni base like a tight ship. There’s a reason why his base is the best.

The Uni base was built around a college campus, and they are thriving. Everyone knows about it, but it’s impossible to get in because of their high standards.

They’re the closest to living a normal life, so it’s understandable. A-Xuan said:

"Doctors and healers are not the same. One has mastered the medical knowledge of humans, while the other knows nothing about it. You don’t have to be smart to be a healer, but to be a doctor you do. Healers know nothing about biology, which means they can’t diagnose a patient. They can’t tell which needs to be taken care of first, to those who can be cured with drugs, to avoid having a healer use his energy in vain when he could help someone else. Every patient should first be checked and diagnosed by a doctor. It’s the only way we’ll be able to save all lives instead of only saving users. Unless this isn’t that kind of place if so, tell me right now."

Emerys looked at A-Xuan indifferently. He could tell that despite his laugh earlier, he seemed angry. He assessed him for once, he had wavy dark hair and a round face.

A-Xuan had almond-shaped green eyes and a well-set straight nose and full red lips.

He’s getting angry about the way things are done, when he’s been Naethan’s number-one cheerleader. So, what right does he have to talk to him like that?

Emerys narrowed his eyes at him and threatened:

"Be careful how you speak to me, I’m very impatient. Furthermore, you speak as though you haven’t been behind every decision made by the head of the medical department." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

A-Xuan is very pissed at the original. To be fair, Emerys is right, that fool never spoke up even when he knew it was wrong.

But he did work in the lab to create a vaccine, so people wouldn’t die anymore.

He thought he could still support Naethan that way, without telling him that he is making the wrong decisions.

Emerys looked at A-Xuan attentively and watched him as he said with anger:

"You’re right because you and everyone at this base act like users are better than mundanes. Their life seems more important than anyone else’s. We as doctors took the Hippocratic oath to treat the patient as best we can, but you’re forcing us to break it. Healers are not doctors, and they shouldn’t oversee a medical department. Do you realize how ridiculous this is?"

Naethan looked at A-Xuan, shocked beyond words. He isn’t concerned with what he says about other healers, but right now, he’s also talking about him.

He’s the one in charge of the medical department. Is he trying to take my place?

He smiled and looked at A-Xuan with soft eyes.

"Sweetie we’ve already talked about this, you said you agreed with doctors assisting the healers. Plus, I went to medical school and worked at the hospital too."

Every doctor was excited when A-Xuan spoke, he said everything they’d been wanting to say.

Everyone acting like mundanes are inferior is also one of the reasons they didn’t dare to speak. They’re doctors, they just want to help, no matter who that person is.

They don’t make a distinction, a patient is a patient. When they heard Naethan speaking to A-Xuan sweetly, they all lost hope.

Even Emerys knew that A-Xuan would change his mind. He has no respect for people who have no spine and don’t fight for what they believe in.
