The Devil's Secretary
Chapter 313: A threat
Under Daisy’s curious gaze, Ryle described the entire incident.
When Ryle had first spotted Lu Xian in the crowd, he had found the person familiar somehow. He noticed that wherever Si Yena went, Lu Xian looked that way.
And after a few minutes of observation, it was confirmed that this person was probably Lu Xian.
It was a weird turn of events and Ryle knew that the man might not even be Lu Xian.
Even if it was Lu Xian, what was his connection with Si Yena?
To get to the bottom of things, Ryle did what he did and things turned out just as he expected.
Daisy was surprised at the turn of events.
’Bang’
Before she could say a word, the sound of gunshots reverberated in the place.
Ryle moved on instinct, pulling her towards him.
’’It’s not here,’’ Daisy could tell that the sound came from the other side of the party hall.
The party must have descended in chaos as the sound of guests screaming pervaded the guest room they were in.
Daisy wanted to open the door to go out and check but Ryle calmly held onto her.
She turned around to look at him, ’’You are behind this?"
Ryle glanced at her, ’’I am not, but I might know who is behind this.’’
In the ballroom.
’’Let go of her! Guards!’’ Nathan snarled as he glanced at the two women at the distance of a few steps.
Maria had one wrapped around Si Yena’s neck while her other hand was raised, pressing a gun to her forehead, ’’Guards? Call them and see if I shoot her right away!"
Maria smiled, but if Daisy was there, she would have realized it was completely different from the smiles she had seen on the woman’s face in the past.
For once, the burn scars on the maid’s face made her look ghostly and that smile rendered her face entirely creepy.
The guests were unnerved. Some were shivering and some ladies had huddled in their partners’ arms. The men seemed equally concerned about the situation, their trembling hands revealing their unsteady confidence even though they kept a straight face.
Every member present there was an elite of the society. But attending an event of the Kingsleys meant that they were not allowed to bring their own people for protection.
But at this crucial juncture, they could see the head of the Kingsley family hesitation and that put them in a spot. Just because of his mistress, he was willing to sacrifice them all.
’’Stop!" Nathan raised his hand to stop his men who rushed towards him.
’’Mr. Kingsley, she is just giving you empty threats. How can you listen to her words?"
’’That’s right. Do you want us to die in vain?"
’’Or perhaps did we come here to sacrifice our lives for your mistress?"
Voices of discontent rose in the crowd. Usually, these people would not dare to talk to Nathan Kingsley in this manner but in the face of danger, they let go of all their fears, becoming more and more brazen as they spoke.
Nathan’s face had gradually turned dark.
He looked at Si Yena who seemed to struggle to breath. He avoided the guests and glanced at Maria, ’’Tell me what you want. I’d do anything if you let go of her.’’
Maria looked at the man, and her eyes were mocking as she did so. At this moment, she spotted a figure at the distance. Her eyes twinkled in a crazed way, ’’You’d do anything to protect this woman?" she tightened her grip around Si Yena’s neck.
Si Yena broke into a series of coughing fits.
’’Anything.... Anything,’’ Nathan said, visibly flustered.
’’Why don’t we do this? You shoot your son and I will let go of your mistress?"
Ryle, who had just walked out of the guestroom, stood at his spot, unfazed.
But hidden in the crowd, Daisy touched her thighs, feeling the metal of her gun through the layers she was wearing. Her guarded eyes traced over the entire scenario and then settled on Ryle.
When they walked out of the room, he had reminded her to stay low-key. But Daisy understood the fact that the moment he was pulled into his father’s stunts, she would throw her disguise away.
It would be a foolish move honestly. She was skilled but she did not know how long she would last with the never ending forces behind Nathan Kingsley. However, for a fact, she knew that she did not care.
"What? Are you reluctant now...’’
Maria’s words had yet to finish when Nathan spoke up, ’’No. He can be dealt with in whatever way you wish,’’ He straightened up and took a step forward, his voice regaining a hint of clarity as he said, ’’And I will see it to the end but you must let go of her.’’
The crowd went into an uproar, discussing how someone could sacrifice their own son for a mistress. Some drowned in self mockery thinking of how they had scolded the man.
Nathan Kingsley could trade his son for his mistress then they were not even worth mentioning in his eyes.
Daisy frowned. But when she looked at Ryle’s face, she did not catch a hint of emotion on him. He was looking at Nathan Kingsley as if he was looking at an insignificant existence.
’’So pathetic. You still haven’t changed all these years, huh?"
’’What.... You...’’
Maria stepped backwards, dragging a half conscious Si Yena with her as she spoke, ’’But again, maybe you have changed a bit. You would not favor a woman this much back then.’’
’’Who are you?" Nathan’s voice was cold, ’’Woman, learn to retreat when you can.’’
’’Who told you I want to retreat?" Maria smiled, ’’I have been biding my time for years now. I have left no retreat path for me. You want know who I am and what you did to me for this day to come?’’
She laughed, pressing the gun harder into Si Yena’s head, ’’It depends on whether you have the ability to do so.’’
