The Duke's Pampered Darling is So Scheming
Chapter 271: The Old Burying the Young
Su Wei turned and returned to the Heavenly Prison.
Seeing him leave and come back, Ye Heng sneered inwardly. He didn’t even bother to stand, merely leaning against the wall as he spoke with derision, "What, is Lord Su back to personally interrogate me again? I’ve already said it—you don’t need to waste any more time on me. I’ll admit to what I’ve done, but no one can pin the blame on me for things I haven’t!"
He sounded quite certain, full of conviction.
Su Wei clasped his hands behind his back and regarded him with a faint, detached gaze.
"Not exactly. I just ran into Ye Chutang outside. She has a message for you."
’Ye Chutang?’
Ye Heng’s brow twitched violently, and his face darkened as he turned his head. "What is she doing here?!"
Every time he heard Ye Chutang’s name now, a deep sense of unease churned within him. With the case still unresolved, she should have been at home recovering from her injuries. ’Why would she come here?’
Su Wei stared at him intently, not missing a single change in his expression as he said, word by word:
"Last night, Ye Mingze was struck by a sudden, severe illness and did not survive."
As his voice fell, a dead silence instantly descended upon the area.
Ye Heng’s mind went blank for a moment before he processed the words, shooting to his feet. "What did you say?!"
Su Wei said, "The Ye Family is still under lockdown, which makes things inconvenient, so Ye Chutang made a special trip here. Lord Ye, my condolences."
All the blood rushed to Ye Heng’s head. He charged forward, his hands gripping the cold iron bars tightly.
"You’re lying! She’s a liar! This must be fake! Mingze is only sixteen and in perfect health! How could he just suddenly die? That Ye Chutang is a cunning schemer! She’s definitely trying to trick me!"
In his rage, the veins on his forehead bulged, as if he were about to burst out at any moment.
From the other side of the cell door, Su Wei’s expression remained indifferent.
A prison guard strode forward and struck his hands sharply. "Insolent! How dare you lose your composure before the Lord!"
Ye Heng couldn’t pull his hands back in time, and they instantly turned red and swollen.
Only then did Su Wei raise a hand.
"That’s enough. It’s only natural for Lord Ye to lose control after the sudden loss of his beloved son."
This remark undoubtedly struck Ye Heng like another vicious blow.
His eyes bulged, his expression was savage, and even his features seemed to twist in torment.
But deep in his heart, an overwhelming wave of anguish and despair crashed down, swiftly devouring him.
He knew with chilling certainty that if these words came from Su Wei’s mouth, they were almost certainly true.
It felt as if a great boulder was crushing his chest, leaving him unable to breathe.
Ye Heng slammed a fist against his chest. His lips trembled, but he could no longer utter a single word.
He slowly sank to the ground, his body curling up as if all his strength had been drained away. His eyes were vacant, his soul seemingly torn from him.
’Just a short while ago, I was gloating to myself about how careful I’d been. I didn’t leave a single clue, and with *that person’s* help, they’d never be able to sentence me to death! Once my time was up, I would get out and see the light of day again! But I never, ever imagined that just as that day was approaching, Mingze would die! That was my only son!’
Su Wei looked down at him, and every word he spoke was like a sharp blade, stabbing repeatedly into Ye Heng’s heart until he was bleeding profusely.
"Given the special circumstances, I’m afraid you won’t be able to go out to see him off on his final journey. However, the dead deserve respect. If there’s anything you’d like me to pass on, I can help with that."
’A parent burying their child is a tragedy in itself, but I don’t even have the right to see my son one last time!’
Ye Heng began to tremble violently.
"No, no! Someone must have murdered him... It must have been Ye Chutang! With a heart as venomous as a snake, isn’t she afraid that her own parents’ spirits won’t find peace in the afterlife?!"
