"Dr. Liu, why didn’t you leave with the ambulance?"
After rushing over, Shen Xinhao asked with concern.
"I’m fine. I waited for you because I wanted to ask if you could skip some procedures or something and then give me a ride home. My wife’s still waiting for me to go back for dinner." Liu Banxia said.
Shen Xinhao gave him a slightly helpless look and frowned. "Dr. Liu, your arm is injured too?"
Following Shen Xinhao’s gaze, Liu Banxia looked down and saw that there really was a small hole in his arm. He hadn’t paid much attention at first, thought it was Old Han’s blood.
He rolled up the T-shirt sleeve, and underneath was a small bloody groove. Most likely it was grazed by the shotgun pellets too.
It was pure luck, really. If the shot had actually gone into his arm, he might have been off work for a long time.
"It’s nothing. I’ll just wipe it with povidone-iodine when I get home, I’ve got that at home." Liu Banxia said.
"If the one who got shot wakes up, dig deeper with him. They’re just a small squad active around Binhai City. Judging from the way they look, they might be a nationwide organization."
"And I have an idea that’s not very well-formed, I don’t know if I’m overthinking it. Could they have something to do with organ trafficking?"
"Anyway I just feel that for egg-selling alone, they don’t need to get this worked up, right? To the point of wanting to kill me. Maybe egg-selling is just one of their lines of business, and we hit this particular business of theirs, delaying their other work."
"We’ll have to wait until they’re taken back before this can be clarified. Let’s take your statement first, then I’ll send you home." Shen Xinhao said.
"You really are something. I just took a look in the car, with that little space it was way too dangerous, there are several pellets stuck in the roof."
"You think I wasn’t scared? I was scared too, I just went all in." Liu Banxia said with a bitter smile.
"But they brought it on themselves. Coming for revenge and they actually dared to pick an emergency trauma surgeon. What do we deal with every day? It’s not an exaggeration to say we brush past life and death almost daily."
"They never thought I’d dare fight back. When they weren’t paying attention, I just went for it. Oh right, I feel like that driver might be a good breakthrough point."
"That San and the one who fired the shot, they don’t look like good people. I’d bet they’ve both got blood on their hands. Of course, that’s just my sense of it."
Shen Xinhao nodded. "Anything else you sensed?"
"Anything else... probably not. Let me think... oh right, they said after killing me they’d run, and they said if you’ve got money you can live well anywhere." Liu Banxia said.
"I figure they’re planning to sneak out of the country. You can probably follow the trail and nail their contacts. These bastards are too much, make some money and leave it at that, but they have to think about killing me."
Shen Xinhao patted him on the shoulder, and could feel how scattered Liu Banxia’s thoughts were and how worked up he was.
This was completely normal; he’d just walked right between life and death for real. If those pellets had hit his head, how could he still be alive?
Liu Banxia is just an ordinary person. Lucky for him he’s a doctor and has seen more than most people; otherwise this time he might really have been done in by this bunch.
He handed Liu Banxia a bottle of water, then stayed with him and started taking his statement.
The more he listened, the more shocked he felt. In that situation it was insanely dangerous. Even someone like him with professional training might not have the guts to operate like that with a gun pointed at him.
He was also amazed by Liu Banxia’s strength. Without real physical strength, can you yank a person over in an instant? What a joke. And Old Han is a bit fat; even if he were thinner, it’d take some effort.
It really proved what Liu Banxia always says: of all people, don’t mess with surgeons.
Their nerve is generally stronger than ordinary people’s because they go through different things. Their reactions are quicker too. If you underestimate them and treat them like lambs to the slaughter, the one who suffers will be you.
"Captain Shen, got any more water? I’m a bit thirsty." After the statement was done, Liu Banxia asked.
"Yeah. Calm yourself a bit, there’s also a small cut on your scalp." Shen Xinhao said quickly.
This was also a normal phase of physical reaction.
Liu Banxia took the bottle that Shen Xinhao had opened, and gulped it down in one go. He shook out his hand, which was trembling a bit, and his heart was also a little jittery.
He knew exactly what this was. This was the body’s reaction after a huge adrenaline surge dropped off. Put simply, just now he’d been in an explosive state, and now his physical strength was a bit drained.
Breaking out in sweat, hands trembling—this was all normal, and his body needed a bit of time to rebalance.
"So, when you send me home just say my car got rear-ended, then I ran into you and you gave me a lift back. Don’t you dare mention this whole thing." Liu Banxia said.
Shen Xinhao nodded. "Don’t worry. But going home in a cop car, you sure you’re okay with that psychologically?"
"It’s fine, I’ve got a clear conscience, what’s there to be scared of riding in a police car?" Liu Banxia smiled and shook his head.
"But you really have to go hard this time and round them all up. Otherwise if they come again and just take a potshot at me from the dark, where the hell am I supposed to run?"
"These bastards are way too capable, they even managed to get their hands on guns. You guys have to crack down hard, this is really too dangerous."
Shen Xinhao nodded again. "Now that guns are involved, the nature of this case has changed. Just wait, we’ll definitely seize this opportunity and try to pull them out by the roots."
"The ones you caught last time were all small fry. These guys should know a lot more. If it all checks out, you’re going to have another big merit to your name. By the way, how did they latch onto you?"
"They’re pretty crafty too, they set their sights on those students." Liu Banxia said helplessly.
"It’s my fault too. Back then when they took photos with me, I didn’t think much of it. Then they used that to make contact and have been studying me for quite a while, pretty much figured out my background."
"Man... criminals nowadays are actually using their brains, it’s going to be even harder to take them down in the future. Seriously though, we have to bring every last one of them to justice."
Shen Xinhao could only keep nodding, trying to steady Liu Banxia’s jittery nerves.
With a situation this dangerous you really can’t dwell on it, the more you think the more scared you get.
Shen Xinhao wasn’t about to laugh at him either. Don’t be fooled by how steady Liu Banxia usually acts; right now he’s completely rattled. And that’s him—if it had been someone else, today’s story would have had a totally different ending.
It was only because all these conditions happened to line up that Liu Banxia managed to save himself. Let someone else try it? They’d have been done for on the spot.
The fact that Liu Banxia could still sit there calmly now—even if his hands were shaking a bit and his mind was a little scrambled—was already a pretty impressive performance.
Even though Liu Banxia also felt he was being tough about it, he still sat out there for nearly half an hour before getting into Shen Xinhao’s car.
Of course, he also had to notify Qiaoqiao in advance, just saying someone rear-ended him and he’d come home after finishing up with the insurance.
Qiaoqiao didn’t think much of it. After all, everything Liu Banxia went through today could be turned straight into a movie. Even if he told it as it was, people might not believe him.
"Dr. Liu, let’s stay in touch at all times. For the next while I’ll assign two people to stick with you, in case any fish slipped through the net," Shen Xinhao said once the car stopped.
Liu Banxia nodded without the slightest politeness. "Okay, let’s do that. Otherwise I’d really be worried. Want me to shell out some extra bonus money for them or something?"
"No need. It’s on us for not thinking things through and forgetting to consider your safety," Shen Xinhao said.
"No more polite crap, then. Once we’ve dragged all of them out, I’ll treat you guys to a meal," Liu Banxia said.
Shen Xinhao nodded with a smile. Anyway, he just felt that Liu Banxia was someone worth befriending.
He’d dealt with all kinds of people—rich, poor, reasonable, totally unreasonable—and there weren’t many straight-shooters like Liu Banxia.
He knew that when Liu Banxia said he’d treat them, it wasn’t just empty talk. Back when he was just helping out, he’d already taken those kids out to eat. And it was exactly because he helped that this whole mess today happened.
This had to be thoroughly investigated. With these four in hand, they could definitely rip open the whole net. Maybe they wouldn’t manage to pull out every root, but they’d at least tear up a big chunk of it.
Liu Banxia was still feeling a bit "weak" now. As usual, Tang Dou came over to welcome him and just the routine pounce almost knocked him over.
"How come you’re so tired today? And whose clothes are you wearing? Hurry up and wash your hands, we’re doing hotpot, the broth’s been reheated," Qiaoqiao said with a smile.
"Wife, work’s tiring, you know. And my car got rear-ended too, I feel sick just thinking about it—that’s the car my wife gave me. Happened to run into Old Shen, so I mugged him for his jacket," Liu Banxia said, pulling Qiaoqiao into a hug.
"Hey, hey, what are you doing, aren’t you embarrassed? Go wash your hands and eat." Qiaoqiao quickly pushed him away, a bit guilty as she glanced over at Qing Kewa and Yanzi.
"Tch, I’m hugging my own wife, what am I supposed to be afraid of?" Liu Banxia said, full of swagger.
Qiaoqiao rolled her eyes at him, grabbed Tang Dou by the ear, and ignored this clown.
Qing Kewa and Yanzi were used to it. These two were always fooling around this happily.
Actually Liu Banxia was the one "feeling guilty," worried that Qiaoqiao would notice something, so the moment he got home he started horsing around. Very effective too—after his little diversion, Qiaoqiao couldn’t even be bothered to ask about the car.
You had to say, Liu Banxia really did know Qiaoqiao pretty well, or he wouldn’t have pulled off that little operation.
He went into the bathroom, took off the jacket he’d gotten from Shen Xinhao, and carefully cleaned his wound before slapping on a rough bandage.
It looked serious, but once it was treated there wasn’t much to it. He might be left with a faint scar in the future, but he didn’t care.
He changed into pajamas to keep Qiaoqiao from noticing anything. Still had to get rid of the "evidence," which was a bit of a headache.
