The First Legendary Demonic Scholar
Chapter 20: The Hidden Nature
"What did you find out?" Not long after the three servants had left the building, Elder Jun reappeared before Overseer Jiang, making the man freeze for a second. He looked around the building only to see empty floors with not even a stain of blood on the ground.
Overseer Jiang fell on one knee and lowered his head before the elder. "Reporting to the elder. It is still too early to tell anything about them."
"Hmm..." The old man showed no emotion to the supervisor’s actions but ran his hand through his long beard. "And..."
He glanced at the man from the corner of his eyes with a look that one would use to look at an insect. "What about the bodies? Have they been taken care of?"
"Them?" Overseer Jiang visibly relaxed and said, "As you had ordered me, the bodies have been disposed of, and not a single clue was left behind. No one would know how they really died."
As he said that, the short-haired man offered a pouch of cloth with both his hands to the elder with his head lowered.
Elder Jun merely glanced at the bag as if it were something insignificant before snatching it away. A mysterious light glowed from his finger and swallowed the bag whole before disappearing with it.
’Was that a storage ring?’ Overseer glanced at the ring with a hint of jealousy in his heart. ’This is the first time I saw a real one.’
He also wanted a ring that could store all of his belongings, saving him the trouble of carrying the weight everywhere and hiding his treasures in different places.
But sadly, not even the outer disciples like him had access to such treasures.
Elder Jun saw his expression and scoffed before pulling something out of the storage ring. It was a square wooden box, and I tossed it to the man. "Take this; this is your reward. Now keep an eye on the servant in your district; I will deal with the other. See what they do and who they meet. I want to know everything."
Turning around, he looked at the pair of beautiful moons shining in the skies, filling the air with their grace. With his hands clasped behind his back, he said, "I have already delayed informing the advisor about this. They will eventually notice the missing people and look for answers. I am sure the third elder is already on her way here; after all, this is one of the places under her command."
Bang!
"I will do whatever you require of me, Elder Jun." Overseer Jiang suddenly slammed his head on the ground, pledging his allegiance to the man before him.
...
At the same time, on the other side of the mountain, a cloaked figure darted through the shadows, staying out of the street where light would expose his presence, and made his way to a desolate alleyway.
He stopped before a conspicuous door in the area and rhythmically knocked on it.
Soon, the door opened but only an inch. Only when the cloaked man whispered something under his breath did the door fully open.
The inside of the building was as dark as outside. But the figure followed the trail of candles lighting the hallway, leading him to an empty room where he could only see the shadows moving.
"You managed to return alive. It seems I was not wrong about you." A voice trailed from the far end of the room.
"Of course. You chose me for this work for a reason. If you want, I can even go through hell and back for you, senior." The clocked man slammed his head on the ground and kowtowed dramatically. The sound was loud enough to echo in the hall, but the impact was not powerful enough to draw blood.
The man in the dark shifted casually while snorting, "Stop wasting your fake flattery on me. "Do you think I don’t know what kind of person you are? The man who killed a hundred children and drank their blood to prove his loyalty to the demonic cult. Don’t think acting like a pushover fool before me is a bit insulting."
Hearing the bare coldness in the voice, the man raised his head and removed the cloak covering his head. The man underneath the cover was none other than Xin Delun.
"Hehe, that was a bit presumptuous of me. " Please forgive me, senior." With a flattering smile on his face, Xin Delun bowed once more. This time it held respect more than exaggerating fear.
The cheery pushover, Shen Yuan, and Ce Xin had seen was nowhere to be seen. Some say only a killer can recognize another killer. Shen Yuan’s instincts did the same, but unfortunately, Xin Delun had hidden himself too deep.
The person sitting in the shadows waved his hands dismissively. "Tell me whatever happened there. In detail."
The servant proceeded to narrate the events of the day without holding back.
"Who are those two servants who went along with you?" The voice was neither that of a man nor of a woman. No matter how hard Xin Delun tried to peer at the face of the man, he saw nothing but endless darkness that threatened to swallow him. The only thing he could see were the dark black robes that almost merged with the darkness itself had it not been for the red-golden lining all around it.
Being the smart man he was, he stopped from probing any further. "Their names are Shen Yuan and Ce Xin. I had to spend some time to follow the boy and find his name. He did not give it to me."
The man nodded before turning his head to the side. "Find me everything you have on the two of them."
In a few breaths, two small booklets flew towards him from the side of the room from between two pillars where Xin Delun could not see anything.
"This boy. No one knows when he broke through?" The man in black spoke to the air and continued on without getting any response, at least not one that was out loud. "It seems he is a very private person. There are very few like him in the cult, and they end up dying faster than the rest."
Without thinking further, he threw Shen Yuan’s notebook on the ground and focused on Ce Xin’s information. Even though there was not much detailed information on servants, there was enough to get a basic understanding of their nature.
"Why is there only less than a page here?" The owner of the voice asked again, this time with a deeper tone.
Turning to the kneeling servant before him, he ordered. "I want you to monitor her and find out everything they can about her."
"As for that other servant. Get him to Join us or kill him. We cannot let anyone who knows about this matter stay irrelevant to us."
