The First Superhuman: Rebuilding Civilization from the Moon

Chapter 218: Super Dog

Jason frowned. Given the current level of progress in the biological sciences, there were still countless mysteries left to solve. They had a long way to go before fully unraveling the secrets of the human body. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to call it a long, uncertain journey.

Many crucial questions remained unanswered: the principles of neuronal interaction in the brain, the origins of self-awareness, the mysteries of psychic abilities, and human immunology.

Therefore, achieving broad-spectrum microbial immunity was basically impossible!

But the Senior Scientists wouldn't make such claims without a solid foundation. They weren't the type to boast; there had to be a concrete reason they dared to propose this.

Could it really be related to the Perfect Element?

Jason patiently clicked on the report marked "Top Secret" on his computer screen. It was submitted by the biology department, forwarded directly by Roman. It seemed he had something important to share.

As he skimmed the contents, he suddenly froze, as if he had just read something impossible.

His pupils dilated, a wave of heat rushed through his body, and the hairs on his arms stood on end.

What was going on?! The research on the Perfect Element, a historically unprecedented and formidable challenge, had actually yielded a result!

Another successful subject had emerged? Really?!

Jason squinted, barely suppressing the adrenaline pumping through his veins. He read the report over and over again to ensure he hadn't misread it. He was sweating bullets, his heart was pounding, and he practically jumped out of his skin.

An animal experiment was a success?!

However, the report was intentionally vague and avoided calling it a complete success. What did that mean?

Jason frowned, swallowed hard, and clicked to the next page.

There was only one photo attached: a... common street dog?

Was this the successful test subject? A lively, large black dog?!

He jumped up from his seat, made a few quick phone calls, and immediately rushed down to the Superhuman laboratory.

This was a critical issue; he had to get to the bottom of it face-to-face. No wonder the biologists were being so secretive about their "broad-spectrum immunity" project, something massive had happened!

If everyone became a Superhuman, their immune systems would naturally be greatly enhanced, which could certainly be classified as broad-spectrum immunity!

He was burning with anticipation. However, on his way to the lab, Jason suddenly realized things might not be as simple as he imagined.

If the experiment were truly a complete success, the scientists would have submitted a much clearer report; they wouldn't be hiding behind vague terminology. There must be some hurdles left to overcome...

Despite this, his excitement remained undiminished. Any data regarding the Perfect Element, even the smallest step forward, was still a monumental breakthrough!

Humanity had studied it for years without any real progress. Now that this massive roadblock had finally shown some signs of giving way, how could he not be excited?

"Roman!" As soon as Jason entered the laboratory, he saw the lead biologist hurrying over to greet him.

He asked urgently, getting straight to the point, "This news about the Perfect Element is too important. Why are you keeping it under wraps? Did the experiment succeed or not?"

At that moment, Austin and the others arrived. When they first heard the news over the phone, they had all been stunned and rushed straight over.

Roman's expression stiffened slightly. He exchanged a silent glance with Dr. Kelly beside him. "It was indeed a success. But... the Perfect Element seems even further out of reach for us humans now."

Everyone paused, completely failing to understand what Roman meant.

Before Jason could speak, Evan immediately asked, "Roman, what do you mean? Didn't you just say there was a successful case? Why is it further out of reach? Was the successful case faked?"

Roman sighed. "Come inside first. We can talk in here."

Everyone followed Roman into the inner lab and saw the mixed-breed mutt that had been modified by the Perfect Element.

It was kept inside a reinforced glass enclosure. It looked no different from a normal stray...

The large dog stood on all fours, looking incredibly energetic. It had bright, intelligent dark eyes and appeared very robust.

Its fur was a grayish-black, and it seemed thrilled to see so many people enter the room, its tail wagging constantly.

It kept its mouth open in a habitual, dopey grin, tongue lolling out. It just looked like a strong mutt; there was no visual indication that it had been modified by the Perfect Element.

This made sense. Jason himself looked no different from an ordinary human. Despite being a Superhuman, there were no visible outward changes.

"Hey, isn't that Shadow?" Austin and Marcus suddenly exclaimed in surprise.

"Shadow!"

Upon hearing his name, the dog jumped up, resting his two front paws against the glass. He barked twice, seemingly very affectionate toward Austin and Marcus. ๐’ป๐“‡๐‘’๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ๐‘’๐’ท๐“ƒโ„ด๐‘ฃ๐˜ฆ๐‘™.๐’ธโ„ด๐˜ฎ

Seeing the puzzled looks on everyone else's faces, Austin began to explain.

"This is a seriously smart dog."

"When we were putting down the Lunar Base rebellion, we happened to save this guy. Remember? A few rioters stole a dog from the biology lab, intending to eat it... but our squad happened to run into them and rescued him."

Jason was taken aback; he had no idea this had happened. Then again, they had split into different squads and hadn't really coordinated on minor details. At the time, they were too busy rescuing personnel to worry about a dog.

He asked curiously, "Okay, but how did he become a military dog? Aren't K-9 units usually German Shepherds or Malinois? Why are we using a mutt?"

Austin sighed. "Well, he stubbornly kept guarding the entrance to our barracks, so we just took him in and gave it a shot. Back then, there weren't many dogs left on the Lunar Base. Any that were even slightly intelligent were drafted into K-9 training. Even if we wanted to maintain biodiversity, we couldn't just let them waste rations without contributing."

"Honestly, this mutt is brilliant. He seems to know we saved his life, and he's exceptionally obedient. He learns tricks incredibly fast, and his basic tactical skills are top-notch."

"Woof! Woof!" Shadow seemed to understand that Austin was praising him. He barked happily, his tail wagging like a metronome.

"Can we let him out?" Austin asked.

After getting a nod from Roman and the other researchers, Shadow immediately jumped out of the glass enclosure as soon as the door slid open.

His entire rear end shook violently as he happily rubbed himself against everyone's legs.

"...It's a shame," Austin sighed. "Dogs just have such short lifespans, ten to fifteen years at most. After our first batch of K-9s had to be retired, the men were too heartbroken. We stopped drafting dogs after that... Besides, traditional K-9 units aren't really that useful in modern combat anyway."

Roman gave a wry smile and picked up the story. "A few days ago, when Shadow was brought down to us, he was in near-complete organ failure. He was on the verge of dying from old age; he really didn't have many days left. So, we figured we'd try using the Perfect Element on him... even though the chances of success were basically zero."

"But then, a miracle happened. It actually worked!"

"Not only did we use a next-generation willpower serum, but we also had him hooked up to all our monitors. For the very first time, we were able to directly observe the comprehensive biological transformation triggered by the Perfect Element."
