Chapter 89: Rude awakening.

Chase jolted awake, which In turn wakes Jasmine who was beside him. She looked up to him in a daze only to see a look of pure terror written across his face.

"What’s going on?" She asked, quickly switching from her relaxed posture, now staring at Chase with focus as she sat on the bed.

Staring at him now was like looking at a different person. Even as his life was in danger he stood his ground, yet now he seemed like a child hiding from his own imagination.

As he turned to look at her and saw her questioning glance, his look became slightly more relaxed as he spoke: "please never peak inside my head again."

A bit disgruntled, she ignored that for a moment. "What is the thing that has you so riled up? I need an answer."

"I’ll tell you another time. For now, we gotta get out of here."

Looking around, the room was small for having two beds in it. It only had enough space for a person to set aside their things and go to bed.

Other than that, the four stone walls were what greeted them. Frankly, Chase was done resting. He stood up and left the room, with Jasmine following him.

He was walking through a hallway and every step he took he was greeted with rooms just like his that likely had people sleeping in them.

Eventually, He came across a room he recalled, knocking on the door. The person who opened it was Andrew. He opened the door, yawning. Surprisingly, his pretty face was almost pristine if you didn’t count a few scales here and there.

"What’s...up?" Chase was a bit surprised as he stared at Andrew.

Andrew had evolved after that fight. He had seemingly got all the attribute points he needed.

Andrew has noticed Chased reaction and put and leaned on the doorway. "Yeah, it’s crazy. Now all the ladies get to witness this mug."

A smile spread across his face as he acknowledged it. Andrew was trying to seem worried about the current situation, but inwardly his spirit was on fire.

He had taken a small step forward in order to beat his father. That was what mattered.

But there was another problem at hand.

They had to check on Donny. Just as they were about to walk in to see Damian, Andrew shook his head.

"He hasn’t been here since I’ve been awake, since you’re here we can look around for him after we check on Donny."

"Figures, He makes a mistake and now he has to go get some air after seeing what it cost."

Jasmine was ripping into him. Andrew didn’t want to give her the credit considering she was basically an outsider for most of the group, yet she was right nonetheless.

Chase shook his head before looking towards the exit. "Let’s move now."

A crowd was surrounding The grave of a deceased man. In the crown was Daphne, staring somberly at the pile of dirt. On the tombstone read "Donovan Fletcher."

Jolting awake, Donny was sitting on a bed.

Looking around, He saw a bunch of people just like him, slightly more or less injured on beds they barely had any injuries at all.

A bit stunned, the thought of a gash on his head caused him to touch it, only for nothing to come of it. His head had been healed.

Surprisingly, They didn’t have much damage on them. Whoever the person who healed him was, they were a miracle worker.

Sitting across from him was Damian, with a plain look. His hands were balled into fists and he had a dangerous air about him.

The moment he noticed Donny was conscious, his expression faded. It had seemed like a bit of relief had formed inside.

"You alright?" 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

"Yeah. Soon I’ll be better than ever." Donny began rolling his shoulders. He almost died but what doesn’t kill you....

Just then the rest of the torchbearers walked in. As they saw him alive and well, Chase walked up and patted him on the shoulder, Andrew leaned in for a half hug, And Jasmine was smiling beside them.

Donny was smiling too. He was happy to have people that cared about his life and wellbeing.

However it also pissed him off. He had noticed the small hints of worry on their expressions before they came in as it still lingered on their faces, like they prepared to see him still knocked out and were ready to wait.

Gods was it irritating. This was why he wished he wasn’t an assassin, because he was a damn good one. he could read body language, and often tell what a person was thinking or how they felt by their movements,

But even an average person could tell they were scared without much effort.

"Thanks guys. But hey, I won."

"That you did. It was –"

"A good thing we won." Donnie purposely cut him off. Come on, cut loose we did it and we lived to see another day. Whose ready to eat?"

Chase was a bit shocked. Donny seemed unaffected, so he wasn’t gonna sweat it too much. They were going to talk later however.

with that, they left, As Damian was about to leave, Donnie put a hand over his shoulder.

Turning around, Damian looked back at Donny who had a angry expression on his face.

"I have pride you know? Don’t ever feel like you’re decision could’ve gotten me killed. If I was scared for my life, I’d have ran long ago.

My life is in nobody’s hands but mine."

Damian nodded. Inwardly he felt a weight coming off of his shoulders. Though he wasn’t sure if it was because he didn’t have the burden, or he was taking any immature chance to push blame off of himself.

Once everything was wrapped up, Donny awkwardly got up and they were walking out, enjoying their food at a dining area.

They were eating at a counter and around them, people were walking, hired adventurers and soldiers who weren’t fans of their town being taken over.

It was a good time. Chase was enjoying his soup and enjoying the presence of everyone,

Jasmine was engaged in a conversation with Donny that he didn’t want to know about honestly. He was glad she was talking with anyone else.

Andrew could finally show his face, and he was abusing it to its maximum capability.

He was stuffing his face full of ribs. Damian next to him was tearing down a steak in a similar manner.

"I thought you had etiquette posh boy."

It was truly a sight. Andrew who usually had at least some decorum while eating just throwing it away.

Andrew looked at him to give a response, only to shake his head and dive back into his food.

Chase was sad that he would have to do it, but he had to be honest, even he didn’t feel safe here, let alone bringing Damian and everyone else.

"We need to find the quickest exit."

Just then all the eating stopped, everyone looked at him with serious contemplation.

Except for Donnie. He shook his head. "I’m not for it. We’re fine, we just went in guns blazing when we shouldn’t have."

Jasmine looked a bit offended. She didn’t do any of that.

"I have no objection." Damian simply felt it would be irresponsible to have this continue. They could ramp this up another time. You can always try to get stronger, you can’t get another life.

Andrew Didn’t want to do any of this but inwardly he didn’t want to do anything at all.

He was a deeply lazy person, the only reason he’d even been doing so much is that this team was prone to getting into life threatening trouble.

And because he didn’t want any more trouble, he voted to leave as well. Jasmine didn’t want anyone dead. It wasn’t just Damian, anyone not named Jasmine was in danger.

with that, Chase looked around, before trying to leave. Just as he made for the exit, he was stopped by a suspicious person.

"You’re not gonna believe this, but you and your team have become overnight celebrities." The man said, pulling out a wanted poster, with a rough sketch of each individual member of Chases team.

Marlo came around. "That was what I was trying to tell you, there are powerful men patrolling the streets, eager to have your heads."
