The Innkeeper
Chapter 2223: A nightmare
Regardless of what others may think, ever since Lex had begun his cultivation journey, he’d always erred on the side of caution. He’d avoided provoking trouble, stayed away from danger, and had only sought out to make friends. The fact he somehow always provoked trouble, got into danger and mostly only made enemies was totally the system’s fault and had nothing to do with his actions!
Now, though, with the Masterless technique hiding his actions, preventing anyone from spying on him and detecting what he was doing, and with his strength rivaling powerful Celestial Immortals, Lex did not need to, nor did he intend on holding back!
Lex took a big, deep breath of the fresh, Midnight air before disappearing from there as well. There was no shortage of work for him to do, but for too long had he been stuck, unable to act freely! He was itching for some action so he directly appeared within the Dream tavern and looked around.
Z stood atop Little Blue, surveying the area, making sure everything was within control. Ever since his last encounter with the Demi-Dao Lord, he’d increased his wariness, but at the same time he’d realized just how much danger the Dream tavern was constantly in, so he began working even harder.
Lex smirked, and flicked a finger towards Z, strengthening the Karmic bead he’d left behind. Now, his Karmic Clone would be stronger than before. He didn’t interfere with Z, though. While Lex could offer him a lot of guidance on cultivation, Z’s path was something he was coming up with on his own. Lex did not want to pollute Z’s ideas with his own - not unless Z asked for help first.
He glanced around at everyone and saw that everything was more or less fine. Then, he stepped into the Dream realm.
It was not a new experience for him - not really. Jack had spent a great deal of time here already, so Lex knew what to expect. But Jack could not do what Lex could, so their experiences were destined to be different.
Since Lex was hiding his identity, he put on the Invincible Tyrant Mask, and for once acted completely without restraint. His surroundings changed, turning into a dark forest full of dead trees. A thick, white mist covered the ground below his knees, hiding whatever might be crawling underneath.
Up in the sky, a red moon shone down on him with an ominous, eerie light. The setting was perfect for a nightmare, but when he looked up at the moon with a devilish grin the very air around him trembled, as if shivering in fright.
His spirit sense spread out like an unstoppable tide, pushing back on the laws of the Dream realm and forming a proper Domain all around him, where only the laws he permitted could act.
The Dream realm was rapidly reacting to his strength. The dreams and visions everyone saw were usually a reflection of the target’s cultivation, but Lex’s strength did not match his cultivation at all. He was an anomaly among anomalies, yet before the dream around him could change sufficiently, Lex reached out his hand towards the sky. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
The red moon, seemingly far away from him, was covered by his hand, and when he tried to grab it, the moon became locked in his grip. Since space did not exist in the Dream realm, Lex did not intend on adhering to the logic dictated by the existence of space!
He looked at the red orb in his hand, feeling the ominous energy that filled it, and began to devour the moon whole! The technique of the Cthulhu, which could devour spirit via dreams, was something Lex could learn pretty easily. Compared to the Masterless technique, or learning to control his Dao Body, learning that took no time at all.
The red moon was a dream that had haunted many, and devoured quite a bit of vitality. Still, it was not enough to bring the moon to life, so it continued to haunt the visitors of the realm. Yet today, it was the one being haunted by this strange devil.
If the moon had been truly alive, it would have felt regret in its dying moments. Instead, as a dream, it faded without the ability to resist or act in any way contrary to the dream. As soon as the moon vanished, Lex’s surroundings changed, but this time he didn’t feel like anything was trying to target him.
Even if the current dream he was in had residents of the Dream realm, either they were already alive, or they had the sense to not try and target him.
Lex looked down and found that the suit he was wearing had changed. Though the Tyrant’s mask remained, his suit had changed into a white and red garment similar to a kimono, making him look particularly... evil.
Pausing for a second, Lex felt how the dream had been able to affect him without letting him resist. At some point, even his Domain had vanished without his notice, disappearing with the changing dream. Lex did not think he could resist the Dream realm fully - even Dao Lords could not do that. However, all realms had laws that they had to obey, and Lex simply needed to learn those laws.
Oh, and he could use hacks! Lex put on his Bathroom Slippers, disregarding the fact that they did not go with his current attire, and felt an invisible, unusual influence on him disappear.
The Dream realm was filled with a strange presence that affected the mind, making them more susceptible to the changing surroundings, much like actual dreams. With the slippers on, Lex found that he no longer needed to resist that presence.
Since that was the case... Lex changed his appearance somewhat, turning his eyes red, almost like the red moon had replaced his pupils, and changed his aura to match the persona the Dream realm had tried to impose on him.
Then, he disappeared, like a random, fleeting thought. Sometime later, a rumor began to spread across the Dream realm about a nightmare that could haunt even dreams themselves, and a true devil, like the ones seen in the days of old.
