Chapter 266: Second chance (2)

"Do you think he’s going to change to be like you wanted?"

Dorothy wouldn’t bet her good carriage that Jack would return a changed man. She was yet to fully believe that he no longer cared for Scarlet or he would stop searching for Beth. "I don’t trust him yet. I have to give him time to see if he means it. At least he will be out of town."

Gwen didn’t trust Jack to go away to be by himself. "Why now does he want to leave Lockwood when Scarlet is out with her family? I don’t trust him but since you are giving him a second chance, I will have faith in him. I don’t want to see him ruined. What now? What will I tell my son?"

"Someone still needs to do the work while Jack is away. Tell him to be patient as his time might come again if Jack is not serious. I will still find a good place for him if Jack does well. I need all the help I can get these days. I must let her go," Dorothy decided, thinking of Beth.

Gwen stood up. "I prefer that you kill her. She wanted to kill you and who knows what she will do when she walks out of here. What if she speaks of you holding her here? Her kind has nothing to lose."

Gwen couldn’t let someone who wanted to harm her sister just go without taking their last breath. Beth deserved to die for all the tricks she pulled.

Dorothy sipped the last of her wine. "She will not speak of her time here. Beth will live as quiet as a mouse in a church. I will make sure of it. Come with me. You said you wanted to see her. You are not to taunt her.’

"Dorothy, you are killing me here by not allowing me to do that. She was plotting to kill you. Let me say something to her. A threat at the very least. We should kill her," Gwen said, her hands itching to strangle Beth.

Gwen always knew that Beth would be trouble which was why she did not give her a warm welcome. Since Dorothy didn’t have it in her to properly scold Jack, Gwen would like to hit some sense in him for choosing Beth and losing Scarlet.

Gwen quietly followed Dorothy up to the second floor. It was quiet which made it hard for her to believe Dorothy at first when she revealed that Beth was here.

Dorothy took a key from a table she passed and opened the door to Beth’s room. It was dark but she easily found Beth sitting by the window.

"It is not time for my food so why are you here?" Beth asked, not looking at her visitors. Someone coming to see her meant bad news for her. "I don’t want to speak about Jack."

"I am not here to speak about him. I will let you go soon," said Dorothy.

Beth did not believe that she would finally be free. The last time she asked to be freed, Dorothy told her that she could leave but then she spoke of how Jack would be a threat.

Beth leaned her head on the window. "Do not toy with me. I only want my food."

’I am letting you go," Dorothy repeated, stepping into the room to see the state of it. "I am moving from this home and though I will still own it, I don’t want you to be here ruining it with your filth. I think you have been here long enough with no one in town missing your presence."

Beth looked away from the window to where Dorothy stood and frowned when she saw Gwen. She hated Gwen far more than she hated Dorothy. This had to be some kind of a joke for the sisters. To taunt her with her freedom only for her to stay here for more weeks.

"I’m surprised. I thought you would be excited to leave. Is it because you fear Jack finding you?" Dorothy wondered.

Beth glared at the two women. Why was Dorothy trying to sound concerned? "You won’t let me out of your sight after what I tried to do to you."

"Of course, I will not stop watching you. I never said that I would. I only said that I was letting you go soon. I can’t take my eyes off someone who tried to kill me so for the rest of your pathetic days in this town, I am going to keep an eye on you. You wanted the attention and now you have it," said Dorothy.

"Why don’t you just kill me?" Beth asked, suspicious of Dorothy’s plans.

"I should but I am going to enjoy seeing you fall back into your place. All your dirty schemes to get higher in this town left you with nothing. I would hate to see you be so foolish as to try tricking anyone else in town and should you speak of what occurred here, I will reveal all that I know about your life. About the family you never wanted to introduce us to," Dorothy revealed.

Dorothy knew all that she needed about Beth’s life. Beth had always been ambitious but she struck gold with Jack. "You will leave tomorrow night. Someone who works for me will escort you out and they will watch your every move. Should you go to the guards or the papers you will end up somewhere worse than this."

"This is a game to you," said Beth. Dorothy was taking her from one prison to another.

"It is," Dorothy admitted since there was no need to lie. "It’s been a while since I had so much fun. You should have figured that it wouldn’t be so easy. That I would just let you go and not play with your life after you wanted to kill me."

In what world would sitting in this room for weeks be Beth’s only punishment?

"Everyone thinks that death is the most satisfying but I think playing with someone before you kill them is far better. You’ll understand it soon. It was honestly a shame that I couldn’t toy with Joseph more before he died. Now I am disappointed," Dorothy said, saddened that she missed the opportunity.

Beth’s mouth was slightly ajar, shocked by this revelation. Since when had Joseph died? Was he not here all this time while Dorothy was keeping her captive? With how Dorothy revealed it, it sounded like she was the one who killed him. "You-"

"People like you tend to fear my late husband and son more. You made a great mistake of wanting to kill me and not falling through with it. Now I can make your life hell. Ask the doctor when you get out but then again, he had to move. Gwen," Dorothy called to her giggling sister. "There are more drinks left for us to enjoy."

Gwen didn’t cover her mouth as she laughed. She wanted Beth to hear every second of it. She was silly for thinking her sister was letting Beth off easy. "Seeing you like this, I promise to never make you angry."

Dorothy closed the door behind them and locked it. "Even if you do, I promised my mother that I would look after you. Leave that husband of yours and let us do some travelling. Let’s spend Joseph’s money so he can turn in his grave."

Gwen hooked her arm with Dorothy’s. "Spending a man’s money has never sounded so lovely. I have much to pack now."
