Chapter 241: Growth of Strength in Despair

The rain began to fall, slow at first, then faster, heavier, as if the sky itself was weeping for the woman lying dead on the stone floor. Droplets pattered against the broken timbers of the forge, hissed where they touched Ignis’s flames, and streamed down Adam’s face, mixing with the blood still drying on his skin.

Ignis wrinkled her nose, her flames flickering as the rain began to dampen the edges of her fire. "Ugh. I hate rain."

Lilith’s threads retracted, her silver-threaded gown soaking up the moisture, but her expression remained serene. "It seems the heavens mourn the fallen."

Isolde stood apart, her hood dripping, her pale eyes fixed on Sean’s crumpled form. She said nothing.

Adam watched Sean.

The assassin’s shoulders shook with silent sobs, his face buried in Leela’s hair. The rain plastered his dark hair to his forehead, mingled with the tears streaming down his cheeks. His severed fingers, still wrapped in bloody cloth, trembled as he cradled her body.

Then something shifted.

The air around Sean grew heavy. Thick. Oppressive.

Adam’s eyes narrowed.

’His aura... it’s rising.’

The rain seemed to slow around him, droplets hanging in the air for a moment longer than they should before falling. Shadows, already deep in the ruined forge, deepened further, pooling around Sean like a living thing. His presence, already sharp with grief, sharpened further, becoming a blade that pressed against Adam’s senses.

’Is he awakening?’ Adam’s internal voice was thoughtful, almost curious. ’Or is he drawing power from something else?’

Sean’s sobs quieted. His shoulders stilled. He lifted his head, and his eyes, when they met Adam’s, were no longer dark with despair. They were black. Utterly, completely black, the pupils swallowed by an abyss that seemed to go on forever.

Gently, so gently it was almost painful to watch, Sean laid Leela’s body on the stone floor. He smoothed her white hair away from her face, closed her eyes with trembling fingers, and pressed a kiss to her cold forehead.

"I’m sorry," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the rain. "I’m so sorry. I couldn’t protect you."

He picked up his fallen dagger. The blade, still stained with Adam’s blood, gleamed in the dim light. The curse energy that had faded from it during the battle surged back, brighter than before, pulsing with a hungry, eager light.

Sean rose.

His movements were slow, deliberate, mechanical. His body, broken and bleeding, moved as if pain no longer mattered. His dark eyes, those bottomless pits, fixed on Adam.

"I will kill you."

Adam’s lips curved into a slow, cold smile. His crimson eyes gleamed with anticipation.

"Try it." He rolled his shoulders, the wounds from Leela’s daggers already healed, his regeneration humming beneath his skin. "I’m curious too. How far can my power go after this evolution?"

Sean moved.

[Shadow Art: Requiem of the Fallen].

His form dissolved into mist, but not the scattered, evasive mist of before. This mist was dense, heavy, clinging to the ground like a living shroud. It spread across the ruined forge, swallowing the light, swallowing the sound, swallowing everything.

Adam raised his hand, summoning [Prismatic Beam]. The light blazed in his palm, pushing back the darkness but only for a moment. The shadows swallowed the glow, devouring it like a hungry beast.

’His power... it’s grown.’ Adam’s internal voice was sharp. ’Not just a little. A lot.’

The mist coalesced behind him. Sean’s form materialized, his dagger already descending.

Adam twisted. The blade caught his shoulder, slicing through his scales, drawing blood. Adam grunted, his fist shooting out, but Sean was already gone, melting back into the mist.

[Stacking...]

Adam’s eyes narrowed. ’The debuff is stronger now. And it stacks with Leela’s curse?’

The mist shifted again.

Sean appeared to his left, dagger aimed at his ribs. Adam’s tail lashed out, forcing him back. Another shadow. Another strike. His cheek. His arm. His thigh. Each cut was shallow, barely drawing blood, but each one carried the debuff, layering weakness upon weakness.

Adam’s regeneration fought to keep up, but the wounds were accumulating faster than they could heal.

’He’s faster. Stronger. And his aura... it’s still rising.’

Adam’s internal voice was calm, assessing, but there was an undercurrent of excitement.

’This is what I needed. A real test.’

He stopped retreating.

He planted his feet, ignoring the dagger that sliced across his forearm, and let his own aura surge. The Crown of the Hollow Glutton blazed on his brow, its hungry light pushing back the shadows.

[Cataclysm Tempest].

The vortex of shadow and storm exploded from his palms, tearing through the mist, shredding the darkness. Sean’s form flickered as the blast caught him, hurling him across the room. He crashed into a support pillar, and the stone cracked. He fell to his knees, gasping.

But he rose again.

His dark eyes, still fixed on Adam, held no fear. Only hatred.

"I will kill you," he repeated, his voice hollow, relentless.

Adam’s smile widened.

"Good. Let us fight each other to the death."

Then they collided with each other.

Adam’s fist connected with Sean’s chest, but Sean’s dagger was already moving, carving a shallow line across Adam’s ribs. They broke apart, circled each other, blood mixing with rain on the stone floor. Each exchange was faster than the last, each strike carrying the weight of grief and fury.

Isolde watched from the shadows, her pale eyes narrowed. "Why is Adam letting him get stronger? He’s just wasting energy."

Ignis, huddled beside Lilith to keep her flames from being doused by the rain, tilted her head. "Because it’s interesting." She said it simply, as if the answer were obvious.

Lilith’s lips curved into a serene, knowing smile. "Indeed. Isn’t it more satisfying to watch a weak enemy grow strong, let them dare to hope they might win, and then crush them?" Her crimson eyes gleamed. "Their despair is so much sweeter that way."

Isolde stared at them, her expression caught somewhere between disbelief and resignation. She shook her head slowly, pulling her hood lower.

"I see. I asked the wrong people."

Across the ruined forge, Sean’s aura surged again. His movements became more aggressive, more reckless. He lunged, his dagger trailing a arc of shadow, and Adam, caught mid-dodge, took a glancing blow to the hip. He stumbled, and Sean pressed the advantage.

"SHADOW ART: ECLIPSE OF DESPAIR!"

The shadows exploded outward from Sean’s body, swallowing the forge in absolute darkness. Adam’s senses screamed, his Hunter’s Tri-Sense reaching out—

Sean’s dagger pierced his shoulder.

Adam grunted, his hand snapping up to grab Sean’s wrist. Dark energy gathered in his palm, but Sean’s form dissolved again, slipping through his grasp.

Adam’s lips curved into a cold smile. He had anticipated this.

[Pressurized Spines].

The water-aspected projectiles launched from his scales in a spreading arc, tearing through the shadows. Sean cried out as one of them embedded itself in his thigh, another grazing his ribs. Blood sprayed, dark against the darkness.

But Sean didn’t stop.

He lunged again, his dagger aimed at Adam’s heart, his dark eyes blazing with maddened determination.

Adam raised his hand, dark energy already coalescing.

"Let’s end this."
