Chapter 292: A Promise in the Abyss
Ignis’s golden eyes widened slightly at Adam’s words, the blush on her cheeks growing even deeper. For a moment she just stared at him, as if she couldn’t quite believe what she had just heard.
Then her lips trembled into a bright, teary smile, the kind of smile that lit up her entire face like a small sun returning to life. The faint flame on her horns flickered stronger, warmer.
"Really...?" she whispered, voice soft and full of fragile hope. "You really mean that? You won’t make me chase you anymore?"
Adam nodded, still cupping her cheek.
Ignis let out a shaky, happy breath. Her eyes shimmered again, but this time not from sadness. Relief and joy mixed together as she suddenly threw her arms around his neck again, hugging him tightly.
"You idiot..." she mumbled against his shoulder, half-laughing, half-crying. "Then stop being so dense next time... I’ve been waiting so long for you to say something like that."
She pulled back just enough to look at him again. Her golden eyes were now burning with a different kind of fire — warmer, more confident. Without another word, Ignis leaned in and kissed him again.
This kiss was different from the first one. It was still filled with emotion, but slower, deeper, and more intentional. Her lips moved against his with gentle hunger, as if she wanted to savor every second now that she had his clear reassurance. One of her hands slid up to cradle the back of his head, fingers threading through his hair, while her tail wrapped more possessively around his waist.
Adam could feel the warmth of her Solar Aura blooming again, wrapping around both of them like a soft golden blanket in the middle of the cold void.
When she finally pulled away, her forehead rested against his, breathing slightly heavier. A small, playful, yet shy smile curved her lips.
"...That one was from me," she whispered, voice husky. "Next time... I want you to be the one who kisses me first."
Adam’s crimson eyes flared with passion. Without saying a word, he cupped the back of her head and pulled her in.
He kissed her back, deeper and far more assertive than before. This time he took full control, his lips moving against hers with clear intent. Ignis let out a soft, surprised whimper that quickly melted into a pleased moan as she melted against him. The kiss grew hotter in an instant. Their breaths mixed, tongues brushing, hands gripping tighter. Adam’s other arm wrapped firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against his body while Ignis’s fingers dug into his shoulders, her tail coiling possessively around his thigh.
The temperature around them rose as her Solar Aura flared brighter, golden flames dancing across her skin and horns. The cold, oppressive void felt momentarily forgotten.
But Adam still had enough awareness left to remember where they were.
He reluctantly broke the kiss with a heavy breath, their lips still barely an inch apart. A thin string of saliva connected them for a second before snapping.
"Ignis..." he said, voice low and rough, "as much as I want to keep going... we’re still deep inside the eternal darkness. This place is dangerous. We can’t lose focus here."
Ignis blinked, still dazed and flushed. Then her expression shifted instantly.
She puffed her cheeks, clearly sulking. Her golden eyes narrowed into a classic pout as she looked away, though her arms were still wrapped tightly around his neck.
"Hmph... always so serious," she grumbled, voice full of childish annoyance. "We finally have a moment alone and you’re thinking about safety? You really know how to kill the mood..."
She turned her head further to the side, refusing to look at him directly, though the embarrassed blush on her face betrayed her. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
After a few seconds of sulking, she finally muttered, still pouting, "Then... how do we get out of here?"
Adam paused. He glanced around at the vast, empty chamber floating in the middle of pure nothingness, then looked back at her with a slightly awkward expression.
"...I don’t know," he admitted honestly. "I was so focused on finding you that I didn’t think about the exit route. The Echo only opened the portal to bring me down here. I didn’t exactly ask for a return ticket."
Ignis stared at him blankly for a moment before letting out a long, dramatic sigh.
"Great... so we’re both stuck in the deepest layer of the abyss with no plan," she said, half-teasing, half-exasperated. "You really are an idiot sometimes, Adam."
Even while pouting, she still refused to let go of him, her tail still tightly curled around his leg.
Adam smiled softly at Ignis’s pouty face, his hand still gently stroking her crimson hair. Even though the mood had been interrupted, he couldn’t help finding her sulking adorable.
He leaned in and placed a quick, light kiss on her forehead before speaking.
"There has to be a way out somewhere around here," he said calmly, looking into her golden eyes. "This place is a prison for failed souls, but the Echo opened a path for me to come in. That means there should be an exit too. We just need to explore a bit. Let’s not stay here too long."
He gently brushed a strand of hair behind her horn and added, "Besides... the others are waiting for us outside. Lilith and Isolde... they’re probably worried sick right now. We can’t keep them waiting forever."
Ignis stared at him for a second, still pouting, but the mention of the others made her expression soften. She let out a small, reluctant sigh and finally loosened her tight hug, though her tail remained curled around his leg.
"Hmph... fine," she muttered, clearly still a little grumpy about the interrupted moment. "But you owe me for stopping earlier. When we get out of here, you have to kiss me properly, no excuses."
She stood up, stretching her limbs as her Solar Aura slowly grew brighter, pushing back some of the surrounding darkness. Even though she was sulking, she still reached out and grabbed Adam’s hand, intertwining their fingers tightly.
"Then let’s go," she said, her voice a mix of determination and lingering embarrassment. "The sooner we find the exit, the sooner you can make it up to me."
Adam chuckled and squeezed her hand back.
"Yeah."
