Chapter 86: A MAD DOG

Abigail

"You bitch!"

My skull cracked against the wall and the corridor tilted sideways. I went down hard on one knee, my bag skidding across the floor. Pain exploded in my head, throbbing and aching. There were so many voices in the air, overlapping against each other.

My hands trembled as I clutched my head, closing my eyes tight in pain.

"Sir,...hands where I can see them!"

"Get off me!"

My body swayed as I reached out blindly trying to find the wall so I could lift myself up.

What the fuck was going on?

"Abigail!" A voice bellowed in panic and a heavy familiar hand grabbed my hand. "How the hell did he get away from you?!"

"I apologize, Mr Wolfe-"

"Get off me! Get the hell off me, I’m not a fucking criminal!"

Drake.

That was definitely Drake. I would recognize his ballless pitchy voice anywhere. Blinking rapidly, I opened my eyes to see Finnegan crouched in front of me.

His eyes were narrowed in worry, moving over my face quickly. His entire body went rigid when he leaned forward to check my head, his hand trembling as he tossed my hair over my shoulder.

"Good morning, Mr Wolfe,"

"Now’s not the time," He hissed, his eyes wide with concern. "That was hard enough to bruise. Are you alright?"

Alright? Oh I was alright.

There was a deep throbbing in the back of my head that was going to hurt like shit later, but aside from that, I was more confused than alright.

He whipped around to glare at the people behind him. "Why the fuck do you have handcuffs if you can’t use them properly?!"

I glanced over his shoulders to see a policeman twisting Drake’s arms behind him. Drake’s hair flailed around as he writhed and struggled to wrench his hand away, his eyes wide with fear. "Tell them it’s a lie. Tell them it’s a lie, Abigail. You can’t seriously want me to go to prison!"

A few steps behind them was Alicia with another policeman, she wasn’t raving mad like Drake was but her face was red with anger as she glared at me.

"Abigail? Hey, hey, look at me," Finn growled, snapping his fingers in my face.

He got an arm around me and pulled me upright.

Across the floor, Drake was still twisting against the cuffs the cop slapped around his wrist.

His face was dark and swollen with it and that stupid jaw of his that always carried that easy grin had gone ugly, his mouth pulled back and the veins in his neck bulged as she screamed at me, frothing like some rabid dog. "Tell him you saw nothing. I can’t go to jail, Abby. I can’t, you can’t want that for me. You love me, you do,"

"You just smashed my skull against a fucking wall, Drake, in front of two police officers. In a building with at least forty security cameras." I tilted my head in amusement, "It’s kind of hard to love you now, don’t you think? If you hadn’t behaved like a mad dog, maybe I could consider it."

He hissed, grinding his teeth together in anger, lunging towards me. Finnegan stepped before me quickly while one of the officers yanked Drake back.

"Add assault to his charges," My boss spat furiously, his muscles tensing under his black suit as he pulled me against him.

I buried my face in his chest, sinking deeper, inhaling his scent. He was defending me. My stomach clenched giddily at the thought and the headache forming in the back of my head took a backseat for a moment.

"You’re going to pay for laying your hands on my assistant, you retarded bastard. Your contract with Wolfe Corp has ended as of this fucking second!" Finnegan spat, tightening his grip around me.

"Look, I promise, it’s all her idea. I didn’t know shit. It’s Alicia, I swear!" Drake cried like the pathetic scum he was.

"This isn’t over." Alicia spat as the cop holding her walked her past us to the elevator doors. I held her gaze and with a wide smile, reached out to press the elevator button.

"Whatever you say, Skinny Lee."

Her mouth fell open, and her eyes flashed in shock. "How long have you known?"

The elevator doors opened and the cops dragged them both in.

"Wait! Wait,-Abigail! This isn’t over. You think you’ve won? You haven’t seen anything yet, you stupid entitled piece of..."

The doors closed on her words and a chuckle left my lips. "Well, that was one way to start the day,"

"Are you alright?"

The top floor had gone quiet now and the adrenaline that pumped through my blood from getting assaulted by that asshole slowly fizzled out.

He had one hand pressed against my back while he brushed my hair out of my face with the other, checking me for bruises. I sighed, leaning in further into his touch, the throbbing at the back of my head only intensifying.

He murmured something and before I could process what was happening, my feet got swept off the ground. I squealed, my arms shooting out to wrap around his neck. "What are you doing?!"

His jaw tightened as did his arm around me. For a second, his eyes dropped to mine and he frowned in confusion.

Panic shot through me. Did he remember times he carried Aphrodite at the club?

"Sit," he said, when we reached my chair.

He crouched in front of me, which put those green eyes level with mine. His fingers came to my jaw, turning my face to one side then the other, his thumb moving across my cheekbone where it had hit the wall and his brows pulled in slightly as he checked.

"There’s no bruising. It could develop later. How’s your head?"

"Throbbing, but I’m fine." I croaked. "Will they really end up in prison?"

His thumb didn’t move immediately. It stayed at my cheekbone a second longer than necessary. We were close enough that I could see the faint tension still holding in his shoulders.

Was he that worried about me? 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Flashes of him kissing me in the car last night filled my head and then the realization that I was sitting in the chair I had rode him on last night made my face burn.

"They should. Six months to three years depending on the case. You acted quickly by getting that evidence to me." His eyes moved over my face again, softening slightly. "I finally have a reason to get Carlton’s ass to court,"

"You’re welcome. Happy birthday," I chuckled and there was that slight ghost of a smile tugging at his lips again. "I hope you liked your present,"

"It’s not my birthday,"

"I know,"

He gave a shake of his head and straightened, brushing his fingers lightly over my face with a slight pained look on his face. "I’ll have the nurse from the medical team over to check you. I’d rather take you to the hospital, but I don’t want you passing out."

"Jesus Holy Christ, it was just one time," I groaned and that ghost of a smile on his lips formed into a small smirk, his eyes gleaming in amusement.

"I’m not taking chances. That shouldn’t have happened, dammit."

After getting checked by the nurse and assuring him for the hundredth time that I didn’t need to go home, I was on my way back from lunch when a man in an immaculate black suit stopped before me, right outside the entrance to the Corporation.

"Miss Abigail Kellerman? My mistress would like to speak with you."
