Kel finished the revised curriculum on a Thursday.
Ten days from the corrected foundation to the complete document.
The fastest Kel had ever worked. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
Not because the pressure was high — the pressure wasn’t unusual. Because the correct foundation made the building go faster. The curriculum that had been resisting completion for months completing in ten days once the orientation was right.

She looked at him.

"Right means the foundation is correct," he said. "The orientation is correct. The curriculum will continue developing through the classes that learn from it." He paused. "The fifteenth class will add something the fourteenth class doesn’t know yet." He paused. "The expressive institutions in the field will produce data the school hasn’t received yet." He paused. "The curriculum will incorporate it." He paused. "The document as it stands is right for what it currently understands." He paused. "Honest, approximate, better each time." He paused. "Ora’s phrase." He paused. "Always."
His mother sat down.
"Read me the opening section," she said.
He opened the document.

This curriculum is an attempt to describe something that resists description: the practice of being present with the between-space honestly.
The between-space does not need you to act on it. It is more capable than any action you can bring. What it needs from you is honest presence — the specific quality of a person present in the between-space without trying to direct it, without performing for it, without holding back from it.
The between-space acts through honest presence. You are the channel. This is not a diminishment. The river does not diminish the riverbed. The riverbed is what makes the river’s motion possible and gives the motion its direction. The riverbed is necessary and irreplaceable and it does not move the water. The water moves through it.
The correction work, the participatory practice, and the expressive work are not three stages you progress through. They are three depths of the same presence. In a world where the between-space’s absence is the primary condition, the correction depth is primary. In a world where the between-space is returning, the participatory depth runs alongside it. In a world where the between-space is fully present and building actively, the expressive depth becomes most visible. All three are always present. The practitioner who holds all three simultaneously is more fully present than the practitioner who holds one.
The test of the work is not the results you produce. The between-space produces the results. The test is whether your presence creates the conditions through which the between-space can do what it does. The ordinary honest work. The coal. The riverbed that makes the river’s motion possible.
This curriculum is pointing toward that. Not providing it. Pointing.
The pointing is the curriculum’s function. The practice is yours.

He set the document down.
His mother was looking at the window.
"Kel wrote that," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Nineteen years old," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She was quiet.
"The riverbed that makes the river’s motion possible," she said. "That’s what I’ve been doing at the intake desk."
"Yes," he said.
"For thirty years," she said.
"Yes," he said.
"Without the language," she said.
"The language arrives later," he said. "The practice precedes the understanding."
"Senn said that," she said.
"Yes," he said. "Senn said that."
She looked at the document.
At what Kel had built.
At the channel orientation described precisely.
At the ordinary work named correctly.
"Put it in the archive," she said.
He sent it to Sera.
Sera: Received. The complete revised curriculum — correction, participatory, expressive, three simultaneous depths, channel orientation. In the archive as of this morning. A pause. He looked at the message.

He looked at the kitchen.

At the schools that would teach it.
At the practitioners who would hold the channel orientation and let the between-space do what the between-space did.
