Chapter 56: The Five Hundred Meter Test

The five hundred meter test broke something open.

Not in a bad way. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

In the way that things break open when the container was always too small for the contents and the contents finally find a container that fits.

Nara sat in the clearing behind the clinic at dawn. Same position as the evening before — cross-legged, the suppression-era stillness present in her posture even three days out of the cell. The Domain around her, the System architecture clean and honest and accessible in ways it had never been accessible through a suppression field.

Maren had spent the previous evening studying Calder’s pre-System references for Framework Memory documentation — there were three references, all fragmentary, all describing the ability differently enough that Calder suspected they were describing different between-walkers’ versions of the same fundamental capacity. He’d prepared a monitoring protocol. Sera had a documentation checklist.

Kael stood at the clearing’s edge and watched.

"Starting at two hundred meters," Nara said. "Then three. Then five."

"Take breaks between each range extension," Maren said. "The ability is four days old."

"I know," she said.

She reached two hundred meters.

The System nodes bloomed in her Framework Memory — he couldn’t see them but he could feel the Domain responding to her access, the clean architecture carrying her ability’s reach the way still water carries a stone’s ripple. Farther and cleaner and faster than it would have carried it through corrupted architecture.

The Domain was amplifying her range.

"Two hundred," she said. "Clear. No strain." A pause as the data arrived. "Fourteen nodes. Six hundred and thirty-two gaps. Forty-one active suppressions."

Forty-one active suppressions within two hundred meters.

"The entire lower guild district block," Hael said quietly. He had come again — would keep coming, Kael suspected, until every active suppression in Valdenmoor was documented and addressed. The retroactive review was his penance applied practically. "That’s — significant."

"The monitoring network is denser in the lower districts," Nara said. "The Church concentrated it where the irregularities were concentrated." She paused. "Where the seeds were concentrated." Another pause. "Three hundred meters."

She reached further.

[NARA — FRAMEWORK MEMORY — 300 METERS] [NODES: 31] [HISTORICAL GAPS: 2,847] [ACTIVE SUPPRESSIONS: 89] [EXP GENERATED: 2,847,000]

Two point eight million experience from a three-hundred-meter range extension.

[LEVEL UP — NARA — LEVEL 57] [LEVEL UP — NARA — LEVEL 58]

Two levels.

Calder’s stylus was moving faster than usual — the analytical excitement of a Level 68 Necromancer who had spent eleven years in a tower encountering something the pre-System references had described as theoretically possible and was watching it operate in practice.

"The experience gain scales with the node count," he said. "Not the distance. The number of suppression gaps documented." He wrote something. "At five hundred meters the node count increases — not linearly, the guild district has higher architecture density in the central sections — the experience could be — "

"Don’t," Maren said again.

"Significant," Calder finished.

"Five hundred meters," Nara said.

"Nara," Maren said.

"I know," she said. "I’ll rest after. Five hundred."

She reached.

Kael felt it through the Domain — the Framework Memory extending to five hundred meters, the Domain carrying it like a wave, the System architecture amplifying her reach through every connected node. The specific quality of an ability finding its natural range — not straining, arriving. The way a voice reaches its natural volume. Not effort. Expression.

She went very still.

For a longer moment than the previous reaches.

Calder was watching her face. "Strain?" he said.

"No," she said. "Volume." She paused. "At five hundred meters there are — a great many nodes. A great many records." A pause. "I need a moment to — sort the signal."

Twenty seconds of silence.

Then:

"Sixty-three nodes," she said. "Seven thousand four hundred and nineteen historical gaps." A pause that carried weight. "Two hundred and twelve active suppressions."

Two hundred and twelve.

"Within five hundred meters of the clinic," Hael said slowly. "In the lower guild district. Two hundred and twelve people currently under some form of Church monitoring suppression." He looked at Kael. "We knew the network was extensive. We didn’t know it was this extensive."

"You’ve been dismantling it systematically," Kael said.

"From the top down," Hael said. "The major infrastructure, the senior Inquisitor-level monitoring systems." He paused. "The granular residential monitoring — the kind that watches individual people in individual buildings — we hadn’t reached it yet." He looked at Nara. "I need a full list. Names, locations, suppression duration."

"The Framework Memory can provide that," Nara said. "For every node I access within range." She looked at him. "Two hundred and twelve within five hundred meters. How many do you think are in the full Domain?"

He thought about the arithmetic.

Five hundred meters produced two hundred and twelve. The Domain was five kilometers. Not linear scaling — the density varied, the districts closer to the Hall of Ascension likely denser with monitoring infrastructure. But even conservative estimates—

"Thousands," he said.

"Thousands of people in Valdenmoor currently under Church monitoring suppression," Nara said. "Some of them for years. Some for decades." She looked at the Domain. "And the historical gaps — seven thousand four hundred in five hundred meters." She paused. "The people who were monitored and are no longer. Dead. Moved. Released. But their records in the nodes." She looked at Kael. "The System kept them all."

[NARA — LEVEL 58 → 59 → 60] [THREE LEVEL UPS — FIVE HUNDRED METER REACH] [NOTE: NARA IS LEVEL 60.] [NOTE: SAME LEVEL AS KAEL.] [NOTE: 4 DAYS OUT OF SUPPRESSION.] [NOTE: THE SYSTEM CALCULATES WHAT WAS WITHHELD.] [NOTE: TWENTY-TWO YEARS OF SUPPRESSED DEVELOPMENT EXPRESSING.] [NOTE: THE TREE WAS ALWAYS THIS SIZE.] [NOTE: THE CAGE WAS JUST TOO SMALL TO SEE IT.]

Level 60.

Same as his.

Nara looked at her display with the between-blue eyes and the expression of someone watching a number they had been told was impossible arrive anyway.

"The cage was too small," she said quietly.

"Yes," Kael said.

She closed the Framework Memory.

Sat in the clearing breathing.

Maren moved to her immediately — the physician’s instinct, checking through the Sovereign bond’s monitoring function, assessing the ability’s post-extension state.

"Well?" Kael said.

"Stable," Maren said. "The ability ran at full range without damage. The Domain amplification is significant — her natural range without it would be considerably shorter." It looked at Nara. "Rest now. The two hundred and twelve active suppressions will still be there in an hour."

"The list for Hael," she said.

"An hour," Maren said.

She rested.

Kael looked at the Domain.

Five kilometers. Level 60 Death’s Chosen moving through the System architecture. Two hundred and twelve active suppressions in five hundred meters of the lower guild district alone.

Thousands in the full Domain.

The retroactive review’s true scope — not fifty years and three thousand cases. Two hundred years and numbers nobody had been able to count until four days ago when a woman came out of a suppression cell with twenty-two years of accumulated development and the ability to read the System’s honest record.

He thought about Hael’s documentation.

About Sera’s history.

About the school opening in three months.

About the 950 Chapters of work ahead.

His System pulsed.

[CURRENT LEVEL: 60] [NARA — LEVEL 60 — SAME] [TWO DEATH’S CHOSEN — VALDENMOOR — DOMAIN ACTIVE] [FRAMEWORK MEMORY — RANGE: 500 METERS — DEVELOPING] [ACTIVE SUPPRESSIONS IN VALDENMOOR — ESTIMATED: 4,000-6,000] [HISTORICAL GAPS IN DOMAIN — ESTIMATED: 40,000,000+] [NOTE: FORTY MILLION.] [NOTE: THE SYSTEM KEPT FORTY MILLION RECORDS OF SUPPRESSED PEOPLE IN THIS CITY ALONE.] [NOTE: TWO HUNDRED YEARS.] [NOTE: SHE IS GOING TO READ ALL OF THEM.] [NOTE: IT WILL TAKE TIME.] [NOTE: THAT IS WHAT THE WORK IS.] [THE WORK CONTINUES.]

Forty million.

He looked at the Domain.

At the five kilometers of stable honest System architecture.

At Nara resting in the clearing with Level 60 on her display and Framework Memory developing and twenty-two years of the cage finally behind her.

The work continues.
