Chapter 125: The Traitor Exposed

The intelligence office was silent except for the crackle of the fire.

Theron sat at his desk; three documents spread before him. The first was the scrap of paper his agent had found in the north; the one with the single name. The second was a shipping manifest showing an unexplained payment to a courier service. The third was a personal letter, intercepted that morning, confirming everything.

He had known for weeks. He had hoped he was wrong.

The door opened. Aeron entered, followed by Kael and Seren. Theron had summoned them.

"You found something," Aeron said.

"I found everything." Theron pushed the documents across the desk. "The traitor. The one who warned Thorne. The one who has been feeding information to Vesper’s faction for months."

Kael picked up the scrap of paper. His face went pale.

"No," he said.

"Yes."

Seren took the paper. The name was written in hurried script, but unmistakable.

*Captain Voss.*

***

They found him in the armoury, cleaning his sword.

He did not look up when they entered. Perhaps he had been expecting them. Perhaps he had been waiting.

"Voss," Kael said. His voice was raw.

"Your Highness." Voss set down the sword and stood. His face was calm, resigned. "I imagine you’re here to kill me."

"Theron’s evidence says you warned Thorne. You fed information to Vesper. You betrayed the crown."

"I did."

Seren stepped forward. "Why?"

Voss looked at her. For a moment, his composure cracked. His eyes were wet.

"Because they had my daughter."

***

The story came out in fragments.

Kira, Voss’s daughter from his first marriage, the young wolf who had joined the Royal Guard, had been taken six months ago. Not by Thorne. By Vesper’s agents. She had been held in secret, threatened, and used as leverage.

"They said if I didn’t cooperate, they would kill her. Slowly." Voss’s voice was flat. "I tried to find her. I tried to rescue her. But they kept her moving. Every time I got close, they moved her."

"Why didn’t you come to us?" Kael demanded.

"Because Vesper said if I told anyone, she would die." Voss’s hands trembled. "I believed him. He had already sent me proof; a lock of her hair, a bloodied ribbon. She was alive, but they could end her whenever they wanted."

Seren’s throat tightened. "Where is she now?"

"I don’t know. The last message said she was being moved again. That was three days ago." Voss looked at Theron. "You’re good at finding people. Better than me. Find her. Please. Then I’ll accept whatever judgment you give."

Aeron spoke. "You warned Thorne about the assassination. You helped Vesper organize the protest. You—"

"I did what I had to do." Voss’s voice cracked. "I betrayed my oath. I betrayed my crown. I betrayed *you*. But I did it to save my daughter. If that makes me a traitor, so be it. I would do it again."

Kael’s hand was on his sword.

Seren saw it. Saw the rage in his eyes. The need for justice...or vengeance.

"Kael," she said. "Wait."

"Wait? He betrayed us. People died because of him. Thorne escaped because of him. More villages burned."

"And his daughter is still out there." Seren turned to Voss. "Do you know where they’re holding her now? Any clue at all?"

Voss shook his head. "The messages come through dead drops. I never see the couriers. They’re too careful."

Theron picked up the intercepted letter. "This arrived this morning. It’s from Vesper’s agent. They’re moving Kira to a location near the eastern border. Elowen’s territory."

"Elowen," Seren said. "She said she had suspicions. She named Voss?"

"No. She never named him. But she knew someone close was compromised." Theron stood. "I can find her. If I leave now, I can have agents on the eastern border by tomorrow."

Aeron nodded. "Do it. Bring Kira back alive."

"And Voss?" Kael asked.

***

The room went silent.

Voss stood straight, his hands at his sides, waiting. He did not beg. Did not plead. Simply waited for judgment.

Seren looked at Aeron. At Kael. At Theron. The bond hummed with conflicting emotions; rage, betrayal, reluctant understanding.

"He was coerced," Seren said. "His daughter’s life was threatened. That doesn’t excuse what he did, but it explains it."

"She’s right," Aeron said slowly. "Voss has served the crown for twenty years. He bled for us. Fought for us. One act of treason...under duress, does not erase a lifetime of loyalty."

Kael’s jaw tightened. "So, we just forgive him?"

"No." Aeron stepped forward. "We give him a chance to earn redemption. Voss, you will assist Theron’s agents in rescuing your daughter. You will testify against Vesper and his network. And then, if you survive, you will spend the rest of your life making amends."

Voss’s eyes glistened. "And my rank? My position?"

"Suspended. Pending review." Aeron’s voice was steel. "You will be confined to the palace. No weapons. No authority. When Kira is found, we will revisit your sentence."

Voss bowed his head. "Thank you, Your Highness. I don’t deserve—"

"No. You don’t." Kael finally spoke. His hand left his sword. "But Seren is right. Family changes things. I would burn the kingdom for her. You almost did for your daughter. I can’t punish you for something I would do myself."

He walked out of the armoury.

Voss stood frozen, tears streaming down his face.

***

That night, Seren found Kael on the balcony.

The stars were bright. The wind was cold. He stood with his back to her, his shoulders tense.

"You would have killed him," she said.

"Yes."

"What stopped you?"

"You." He turned. "Aeron. The bond. The voice in my head that said killing a father won’t bring back the dead. It won’t make the kingdom safer. It won’t undo what happened."

He looked out at the city.

"He was wrong. But he was also scared. I understand being scared."

Seren took his hand. "We’ll find Kira. We’ll bring her home. And then we’ll deal with Vesper."

"Vesper." Kael’s voice hardened. "He’s the real enemy. Not Voss. Vesper threatened a child. Used a father’s love as a weapon."

"Then we destroy him."

"Together." The bond hummed with shared purpose.
