...
Alaric stared at her face. Silver hair. Blue eyes. And a face that was undeniably beautiful.
His fingers flexed slightly at his side, like he wanted to do something with them and didn’t know what.
Then, he reached out and tapped both Nate and Xanden on their chests.
"The field is waiting." He said.
Nate didn’t move, neither did Xanden. For a second, the three of them stood there.
Nate’s jaw tightened. His eyes flickered back to Aire and she had already looked away. She acted like they weren’t even there, and his wolf stirred violently inside him.
’What is happening to our mate?’ it growled lowly in his head. ’We’re not leaving.’
Nate exhaled sharply through his nose, but Alaric had already stepped back, and Xanden clicked his tongue once. Annoyed.
"We’re not doing this here," Xanden muttered under his breath.
A beat passed, and they all turned, and walked back to the field.
The moment they left her space, she let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding.
Her fingers curled slightly at her sides, and she didn’t look at them.
Her eyes shifted slowly, and deliberately landed on another male.
He was taller than most. Broader. His back flexed as he moved, with his muscles tightening as he twisted and drove his opponent back.
Aire tilted her head slightly, and watched.
Her lips curved up just a little.
Then the man landed a clean hit.
Hard.
His opponent stumbled, and fell.
Aire let out a soft, unexpected giggle and clapped. However, it was visible enough to be noticed. The man froze for half a second. Then straightened, clearly caught off guard.
Across the field, Nate stilled the moment the sound reached him. His head snapped in her direction, and his eyes darkened instantly.
Xanden noticed too. "She’s watching someone else."
Alaric didn’t say anything, but his gaze had already shifted, andstayed locked on her.
Aire didn’t stop.
If anything, she leaned slightly forward, like she was more interested now.
Her eyes stayed on the same male, tracing and observing Jim, comoletely unbothered.
Furious, Nate moved.
Xanden grabbed his arm. "Don’t."
Nate didn’t look at him. "She’s doing it on purpose." He grunted, his eyes still on Aire.
"I know."
"Then let go."
Xanden didn’t.
Alaric’s voice came from the side. "Finish the training." He ordered.
Nate ripped his arm free, and turned back facing the field. He hit the nearest opponent harder than necessary.
Aire smiled faintly.
Her fingers brushed lightly against each other, then she straightened again.
At that moment, something small ran into her.
Aire blinked, and looked down, only to see a child, a little girl. She was small and barefoot. Her hair was messy and tied loosely at the back.
She raised a cup toward Aire. "Here."
Aire paused. Her brows pulled together slightly. "What?"
"Someone said I should give you this," the girl said quickly.
Her voice was rushed, and almost rehearsed. She shoved the cup into Aire’s hand, and ran back into the crowd.
Aire brows furrowed.
Her fingers tightened slightly around the cup, and she looked after the girl.
"Madam?" she called behind her.
However, Madam wasn’t there. There was just four maids there, standing stiffly.
Aire frowned slightly.
That... wasn’t right. Madam wouldn’t just leave. Her gaze dropped back to the cup.
She swirled it slightly. The liquid moved easily, and normal. She brought it closer, and inhaled.
It didn’t smell bad.
Her brows pulled together slightly. She lifted it slightly, about to take a closer look, and then, it was gone.
Someone snatched it from her. So fast she barely saw it happen. She lifted her face, then saw Xanden.
He held the cup, and hiis expression dark. They turned cold.
"What the hell?" Before she could finish, Nate ran past her, fast.
He caught the child before she could get far. His hand grabbed the back of her collar, and yanked her back hard.
She screamed.
Alaric stepped forward, and positioned himself in front of Aire immediately.
His eyes scanned the entire field. Then, he growled. "Stop."
The entire training ground froze immediately. Every movement halted, and every sound cut off.
Silence dropped between them, and they all bowed their heads slightly. King Elijah sat up straight from where he sat, and rested his gaze on his sons.
Aire’s heart started beating faster.
"Poison." Xanden’s voice cut in.
Aire’s breath hitched slightly. "What?"
He didn’t bother to look at her, or give her a reply. His eyes were on the cup.
Aire’s fingers went cold. "How would you know it was poisoned?"
"We smell it." Alaric answered, as if her question was the dumbest he had ever heard.
Aire swallowed. Her gaze snapped toward Nate. He now held the child in one hand like she weighed nothing.
The girl struggled weakly, crying, and panicking.
"Who owns this child?" Alaric asked, low and commanding.
Aire’s chest tightened. She stared at the child. This felt wrong.
Nate’s grip tightened. "Who," he said slowly, his voice dropping, "owns this child?"
Still, nothing. No one stepped forward.
He paused, scanned everyine, then a sickening crack broke the silence.
Aire flinched violently.
Nate had snapped the girl’s leg from the knee. The sound echoed, brought and clean.
The girl screamed.
Aire’s stomach dropped lower than it had. Her hands trembled slightly, but no one else reacted.
They just stood there, watching like it was a normal show. Aire’s breathing became uneven.
"She can’t heal," someone whispered faintly.
"Human child..."
"Not one of us..."
Aire’s eyes widened slightly hearing the whispers around her.
She looked back at the girl. The girl was still crying, visisbly shaking now. Her small hands clawing at Nate’s wrist weakly.
Nate didn’t look affected. "Who. Owns. This. Child." he repeated.
His hand shifted toward the other leg.
Aire moved. Her voice came out before she even thought. "Nate."
He didn’t respond. His eyes were golden now. Fully golden like he was about to go to war.
His claws were starting to push through his fingers. "WHO SENT HER."
The filled remained silent.
Xanden’s voice came, out calm and detached, giving a final order. "Kill her."
Aire’s head snapped toward him. Her eyes widened. "What? No, you wouldn’t."
None of the Alohas stared at her, or even acknowledged her words. Her chest tightened painfully.
Her inside snapped.
She moved towards them. She stepped forward, and yanked the girl out of Nate’s grip.
Nate didn’t stop her. His wolf stilled instantly at her touch, and everyone froze again.
The girl collapsed into Aire’s arms, crying uncontrollably. Her body was shaking violently.
Aire held her tight and protectively.
Her own hands were trembling now.
"Did you even ask her?" Aire snapped, staring at Nate. Her voice was sharp and furious. "You were supposed to ask her before hurting her."
Her grip on the child tightened slightly.
"This is a child!" Her chest rose and fell rapidly. "Don’t you have any compassion in there?!"
Nate didn’t respond.
Aire didn’t wait for a respond. She turned, walking away from him. She stopped in front of Alaric, and held his gaze.
Her eyes were blazing, about to turn into mist. She caught herself before she’d cross a line. Then,
Then, she crouched down slowly, lowering the girl with her.
"It’s okay," she murmured softly. Her voice changed completely, gentle and warm. "Look at me." She whispered.
The girl sobbed, but she tried.
Her lips trembled. "A lady..." she whispered. "She gave it to me... she had a cloak..."
Aire nodded slowly. "It’s okay."
"I didn’t see her face..." the girl cried, desperately trying to explain.
"I believe you." Aire’s hand moved to her head, patting her gently. Her eyes dropped to the girl’s legs. They were now purple and swollen.
Aire swallowed hard. She knows what this feels like.
She looked back at her. "I’m cursed," she said quietly. "But... would you like me to take you home? We’ll find someone to help you."
The girl nodded weakly.
"Aire." Alaric’s voice raised behind her, barely controlled. "You would do no such thing."
Aire turned her head slowly.
Her expression changed instantly. "Watch me."
