The Tycoon's Mysterious Darling Wife
Chapter 578: Episode 35: Night of Terror
Fu Shuyi had just walked out of Charming Color when she sensed someone following her. She turned her head to glance behind, finding no one there, yet she was certain she was being tracked. She just didn’t know who was following her or what their purpose might be. However, she didn’t feel any panic.
Thinking quickly, Fu Shuyi sent a message to Bai Junnan and then headed to her car. Her visit to Charming Color tonight was not for a drink but to deliver an item, and now that she had completed her task, it was time to head home. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
As she drove away from Charming Color, Fu Shuyi noticed a car trailing behind her. It was an ordinary white Chevrolet, inconspicuous in the traffic. If she hadn’t seen it start to follow her from Charming Color, she wouldn’t have suspected it was tracking her.
Her phone rang. Fu Shuyi glanced at the number and answered, "Sister Qingzhu, yes, I went to Charming Color tonight. How did you know? Are you there too?"
Gu Qingzhu had stepped out of Charming Color only to find her target person had vanished. She called Fu Shuyi, hoping it was her she had spotted briefly. It turned out she was right—it was Fu Shuyi.
Gu Qingzhu’s expression darkened, wanting to warn Fu Shuyi but afraid of scaring her. She exchanged a look with Fu Chenxuan before speaking, "Shuyi, where are you now?"
Fu Shuyi glanced around and reported her location, grateful she wasn’t far from Charming Color. Looking through the rearview mirror at the Chevrolet, she said, "Sister Qingzhu, I think I’m being followed. A white Chevrolet has been on my tail since Charming Color."
A chill ran down Gu Qingzhu’s spine, and Fu Chenxuan, having heard his sister’s words, spoke in a grave tone, "Shuyi, drive slower and try to stay in crowded areas. Qingzhu and I are coming over now."
Hearing her brother’s voice, knowing he and Gu Qingzhu would soon arrive, Fu Shuyi felt much reassured. "Brother, I understand. I’ll send you my real-time location."
After hanging up, Fu Shuyi looked again at the Chevrolet behind her. She couldn’t make out the driver, but that didn’t matter. Steering the wheel, she drove toward another bustling street.
The following car turned too, confirming her suspicion that she was indeed being followed. She felt no fear, only a thrill—such scenarios she had only seen on TV.
"Qingzhu, who is following Shuyi?" Fu Chenxuan asked, his voice tinged with worry, knowing from Qingzhu’s expression that their pursuer must be trouble.
"A fish that slipped through the net. Chenxuan, this time they’re after me." But why did they target Fu Shuyi? Did they know of her engagement to Fu Chenxuan and thus went after her? But that was improbable; their engagement ceremony was low-key, known only to close relatives of both the Fu Family and Shen Family. Logically, the pursuers shouldn’t have known.
The phrase "a fish that slipped through the net" carried many implications, highlighting the danger of their adversary.
Although Fu Chenxuan never delved deeply into what Gu Qingzhu faced during her undercover years or the kind of organization she dealt with, he could guess; their leader had been captured, and he couldn’t ensure what these desperados might do next. Shuyi was now in profound danger.
They dared not alert the police for fear of tipping off their pursuers. If they were cornered, who knew what insane act they might commit, possibly harming innocent bystanders, especially since Shuyi was now in a populated downtown area.
"Chenxuan, I think we should lure them to a more remote area," Gu Qingzhu reluctantly suggested, knowing it was akin to using Shuyi as bait—a dangerous proposition. But continuing to circle in the city might alert the follower, and that outcome was also unpredictable.
Fu Chenxuan understood her worry, but in a less populated area, their pursuer would have fewer inhibitions and Shuyi’s danger would increase massively. His lips thinned. This was his own sister; he couldn’t permit her to be in such peril. However, Gu Qingzhu’s concern was not unfounded. If the stalker became desperate and caused trouble in the city center, the danger could be even greater.
If he were the one being followed, he would not hesitate to lead them to the outskirts. But with Shuyi as the target, he found himself unable to make that decision.
Gu Qingzhu knew she had put Fu Chenxuan in a difficult position and spoke gently, "I apologize, it was my oversight." Although Fu Shuyi was skilled, she was just an ordinary girl, and such a thrilling task should not have been hers to undertake.
"I’ll give Captain Liu a call," Gu Qingzhu said. Captain Liu was a criminal detective and her single contact when she was undercover.
Fu Chenxuan did not stop her from making the call. After she hung up, he said, "I’m not blaming you, I know you’re thinking of the bigger picture, but Shuyi is my sister, and I can only choose to be selfish."
"I understand, it was my oversight too," Gu Qingzhu replied. "Captain Liu has already sent someone to assist us. However, he suggests that we try to lure the person to the suburb. The adversary might carry lethal weapons, and downtown is too densely populated; any mishap could pose a great danger."
Right then, Fu Shuyi’s call came through. "Brother, where are you?"
"We are less than a kilometer away from you, Shuyi. Brother has something to discuss with you," Fu Chenxuan hesitated for two seconds before continuing, "Lead them to the outskirts. Don’t worry, brother will follow right behind you and won’t let anything happen to you."
Fu Shuyi agreed without hesitation. "Okay, I’ll find a way. I was just about to suggest the same to you, but you beat me to it." Fu Shuyi sounded relaxed, showing no signs of fear.
"Shuyi, don’t be afraid, your brother is here."
"Brother, I’m not scared, really. But brother, who is this person?"
"A desperate criminal."
Those four words caused Fu Shuyi’s expression to change slightly as she clenched her teeth on her red lips. "Brother, is it Sister Qingzhu’s enemy?" She reacted quickly, she didn’t have enemies, neither did the Li Family nor Lu Yimeng would be so ruthless, so the only possibility seemed to be Gu Qingzhu’s enemy, wanting to target her because they couldn’t confront Gu Qingzhu directly.
Fu Chenxuan did not deny it, "Shuyi, prioritize your safety above all. Your brother is right behind you, and the police are on their way. Just lead them to the suburbs, brother will handle the rest."
Fu Shuyi nodded, "Okay, I understand. Brother, I’m not scared. I am, after all, the daughter of Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi." Her father was a hero, and although Shen Qinglan hadn’t achieved as much as Fu Hengyi, she had heard from adults how her mother, during a visit to the amusement park with Brother Pei Hao, had spotted a group of human traffickers and successfully helped the police dismantle a child trafficking ring.
Both her parents were heroes, so how could she be a coward? Fu Shuyi glanced at the white Chevrolet still closely trailing behind her, bit her teeth, and turned at a bend that led directly onto the highway. Given the time and it being nighttime, there wouldn’t be much traffic on the highway.
Fu Shuyi couldn’t understand why the pursuer insisted on following her, even after clearly realizing she noticed the tailing. Besides following, the pursuer hadn’t made any other moves.
Unable to puzzle it out, she decided not to dwell on it. With a stern expression, she focused on driving. Bai Junnan had called once in the middle, but she had hung up on him. The fewer people involved in this matter, the better, and she didn’t want to bring trouble to Bai Junnan.
On the white Chevrolet, the woman eyeing the road ahead, Fu Shuyi’s car and the vehicle closely following piloted by Fu Chenxuan, hooked her red lips slightly, her eyes brimming with hatred.
The woman she was seeking vengeance against was Gu Qingzhu. This woman had betrayed her husband, leading to his capture, forcing her to flee with their young child. Just a few days ago, she received news that her husband had been sentenced to death, to be executed in a month.
She deeply loved her husband, who, despite being a big D criminal, was her only and most beloved person. Gu Qingzhu, that despicable woman, had been trusted by her husband only to betray him and personally send him to prison. She would never share the same sky with Gu Qingzhu.
She had been looking for Gu Qingzhu for more than a day or two, but Gu Qingzhu had never stepped out alone, always accompanied by the man named Fu Chenxuan. She couldn’t handle Gu Qingzhu alone, much less with Fu Chenxuan involved, so she had shifted her target to Fu Shuyi.
She had already inquired, Fu Shuyi was Fu Chenxuan’s most beloved sister, and if she learned that Fu Shuyi had an accident because of Gu Qingzhu, she didn’t believe that Fu Chenxuan would stay with Gu Qingzhu.
Gu Qingzhu had caused her to lose her husband, and she couldn’t bear to watch Gu Qingzhu be with the person she loved.
The woman knew that Fu Shuyi was leading her out to the suburbs, but she didn’t care; it suited her even better to handle Gu Qingzhu all at once. Her child was hidden in a safe place, and even if she couldn’t return this time, her child would grow up safe.
She came prepared to die.
Fu Shuyi sped up, and the person following her accelerated as well, which did not panic her because she had already spotted her brother’s car.
Once on the highway, Fu Chenxuan no longer hid his intentions and immediately caught up to the white Chevrolet. Gu Qingzhu rolled down her window—just as the woman did too. Their eyes met, and Gu Qingzhu’s face was stern, "Your target is me."
The woman smiled, "Yes, my target is you, but since I can’t deal with you directly, I had to go after someone else." As she spoke, her empty hand slowly pulled out a gun, causing Gu Qingzhu’s face to pale. She hadn’t expected the woman to actually be carrying a lethal weapon and found it strange that she chose to reveal it now rather than in a crowded area where it could have been more effective.
Gu Qingzhu couldn’t fathom the woman’s thoughts but knew the situation was dire, "Calm down; the boss is in jail already, and your child is still young. If something happens to you, he’ll be an orphan." Knowing how horrifying the woman could be when driven mad, Gu Qingzhu could only use the child as leverage.
A brief haze passed through the woman’s eyes, but she quickly snapped out of it. With a ferocious look at Gu Qingzhu, she spat, "You have no right to mention him, you wretch! If it weren’t for you, he wouldn’t have been caught, our family would still be living happily together. It’s all your fault, and I will have you buried with me."
Originally, the woman’s target was Fu Shuyi, but upon seeing Gu Qingzhu, she changed her mind; she wanted Gu Qingzhu dead to cleanse herself of her sins.
Seeing the woman not aiming the gun at Fu Shuyi’s car, Gu Qingzhu actually sighed in relief. She didn’t fear for her own safety but couldn’t let Fu Shuyi be endangered because of her.
Fu Chenxuan, having listened to their conversation, also saw the woman’s movement. He sharply turned the steering wheel and fiercely rammed his car into hers. Her trigger hand jerked and the bullet went through the backseat’s glass but didn’t harm Gu Qingzhu at all.
Hearing the crash and gunfire behind her, Fu Shuyi was startled and glanced back just in time to see the two cars colliding again. She felt a surge of fear and didn’t dare to stop; instead, she sped up, knowing she couldn’t slow her brother down at this moment.
Fu Chenxuan glanced at Fu Shuyi and saw her pulling further away, which eased his mind—she was safe.
Chenxuan, are you alright?" Fu Chenxuan managed to ask, concerned about Gu Qingzhu as she seemed to have been hit in the collision.
"I’m fine, just a bit dizzy. Don’t worry about me, just keep going," Gu Qingzhu responded calmly, coldly watching the woman who was pointing the gun at her. Luckily, the woman was the boss’s mistress, protected by him and unknown to many. Perhaps she never expected this day to come as her shooting skills were terrible—she hadn’t hit her target even at close range, and her second shot was a misfire.
Fu Chenxuan noticed the woman’s poor shooting and determinedly hung back a car-length before ramming into her again forcefully.
The sudden impact made the woman lose her grip; the gun fell to the ground, and Fu Chenxuan’s car ran over it.
This gun, once given by the boss for the woman’s protection, was her only one, now destroyed by the impact. A moment of blank confusion crossed the woman’s eyes, not knowing what to do next.
Her knuckles whitened on the steering wheel, her eyes revealing madness and hesitation.
"Don’t do anything foolish, think about your child," Gu Qingzhu yelled at the woman. She could now confirm that the woman had no weapons other than the handgun.
The woman, upon hearing this, just sneered and once again rammed into Fu Chenxuan’s car ferociously.
Fu Chenxuan could only be thankful that he was driving a Land Rover today, which has high safety performance. Despite taking several hits, the damage to the vehicle wasn’t too severe. In contrast, the white Chevrolet had its rear and front smashed, and one side door was deeply dented.
The woman glanced back at the Land Rover and was pondering what to do when she suddenly heard the sound of sirens getting closer. Realizing that Gu Qingzhu and the others must have called the police, a determined look flashed through her eyes. She knew this was her only chance for revenge; if she failed this time, she would never have another opportunity.
Thinking this, she stepped on the accelerator, speeding up her vehicle, and quickly pulled away from Fu Chenxuan and his group. Fu Chenxuan’s expression changed, thinking she was going after Shuyi, he hurriedly followed. But then, unexpectedly, the woman suddenly turned her vehicle around. The tires screeched loudly against the ground as the white Chevrolet positioned itself horizontally on the road. Seeing that the Land Rover was about to crash, Fu Chenxuan and Gu Qingzhu’s pupils dilated, realizing that all three of them could die in the collision.
He slammed on the brakes, pushing them to the floor. Fu Chenxuan only had time to pull Gu Qingzhu into his arms before the Land Rover violently smashed into the Chevrolet. The loud impact was heard even by Shuyi from a distance; she instinctively hit her brakes, a deep unease surging in her heart.
When Captain Liu and his team arrived, what they saw were the two vehicles that had collided. His face turned pale. He hurriedly parked and rushed to the site, only to find Fu Chenxuan and Gu Qingzhu both unconscious.
Other people quickly implemented a rescue, trying to pull the two out of the car. Captain Liu headed towards the Chevrolet and found the woman already dead at the scene, holding a hand grenade in her hand which she hadn’t managed to detonate. Seeing this, he quickly took the grenade out.
Fortunately, Fu Chenxuan and Gu Qingzhu were only knocked unconscious and had only minor cuts aside from the impact; Gu Qingzhu was already awake by the time Shuyi arrived. Protected in Fu Chenxuan’s arms, she had sustained much less impact.
"Brother," Shuyi said, looking panicked.
Gu Qingzhu grabbed him, "Shuyi, your brother is fine, don’t worry."
The ambulance arrived quickly. Fu Chenxuan still hadn’t awakened. The doctor suspected a mild concussion, but it wasn’t serious; a two-day hospital observation would suffice.
Shuyi hadn’t yet come to terms with the day’s events, sitting dazed on a chair outside the ward. Gu Qingzhu sat next to her, holding her hand. "Shuyi, are you alright?"
Slowly turning her head and blinking, Shuyi responded softly, "Sister Qingzhu, you scared me to death."
Gu Qingzhu hugged her, "Don’t be scared, it’s all over now. I’m sorry, I put you at risk." The woman’s target had been her, and if she had been more cautious, Shuyi wouldn’t have been targeted.
"It’s lucky you and my brother are alright. When I heard that last crash, I thought I was going to have a heart attack," Shuyi murmured, her voice filled with lingering fear.
Hearing this, Gu Qingzhu couldn’t help but laugh and cry, thinking Shuyi had been frightened by the pursuit that evening. But it turned out she was worried about her and Fu Chenxuan’s safety. A warmth surged up in her, and she patted Shuyi’s shoulder. "Shuyi, thank you." Thank you for not blaming me.
"As long as you and my brother are safe," Shuyi said, sitting up straight with a relaxed look, "But tonight was truly thrilling. I’ve only seen things like this in movies. I never thought I’d get to experience it myself in my lifetime."
Gu Qingzhu looked at the excitement in her eyes, speechless. This girl’s heart really was big.
