Chapter 154: Chapter 154: MCU Major Crisis: Infinity

When the great Emperor moved humanity’s capital to the edge of the galaxy, to that vast Warp rift born from the rise of a mighty god of the Warp, both the daemons of the Warp and the living beings of the material universe were shaken by that golden figure.

The Emperor himself stood watch at the gates of the nation. He chose to face the disasters of the Warp head-on and shoulder the heaviest burden for humanity.

Sanguinius had once wanted to follow the great Emperor there, but the Emperor refused him. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

He said that an angel had an angel’s duty to carry out, and should not waste endless time on meaningless things, or on simply accompanying him. The angel’s sword was meant to tear apart humanity’s nightmares.

As one Space Marine Chapter after another assembled once more, and Horus, carrying all of his shame on his back, raised his blade and led his forces to the borders of the Imperium to fight the xenos, it felt as if the Imperium had returned to its most glorious age.

While that golden being stood before the vast rift and held back the invasion of horrors, the Emperor’s sons, those angels, swung their blades at every alien race that threatened humanity’s survival.

Humanity cried out, long live the Imperium, long live mankind, long live the Emperor!

And while Jovian devoured the Warp even as he fought off the harassment of the Chaos Gods, serving as the Imperium’s great lighthouse, the guiding beacon for Warp travel, the brilliant signal lighting the whole Imperium, a bruised and battered bald man came looking for him.

The bald man wore clothes like something out of ancient Greece, and his face was covered in claw marks.

"Watcher, it’s only been a few days. How did you end up looking this wrecked?"

Seated on his golden throne, Jovian looked at the injured bald man and could not help laughing.

"Jovian, stop messing around in this shard world and come help me!"

The Watcher wiped the sweat from his broad forehead and immediately grabbed Jovian, trying to drag him outside.

"Shard world?"

Jovian froze. He did not understand what the Watcher meant.

"Take a good look at what this world really is."

The Watcher warned him, but there were some things he could not say too clearly. If he said too much, certain great beings might notice that he had abandoned his post.

"This is..."

Jovian spread out his psychic power in every direction, and his expression changed instantly.

This universe was only the size of the Milky Way. Beyond the galaxy was collapsing spacetime.

"This is a trap, one reflection from an infinite hall of mirrors inside a far greater world. You never truly entered that greater world. Everything you saw, everything you encountered, was shaped by what you wanted to see, but it was never real."

The Watcher glanced around, making sure he had not drawn the attention of certain great beings, then gave Jovian his warning.

...

After hearing the Watcher’s words, the sense of wrongness in Jovian’s heart finally vanished. Ever since entering this world, everything had gone too smoothly. Everything had unfolded exactly as he wished, exactly as he wanted.

"How do I make this world real?"

Jovian asked the Watcher for advice. He could not accept that after everything he had done, he had only ended up blowing a bubble in the Warp.

"Then you complete the bubble. Use this beautiful dream to replace the nightmare."

"But that’s not something the current you can do."

"It would take an enormous amount of energy to sustain it..."

"So before that, help me first..."

The Watcher did not wait for an answer. He simply dragged Jovian toward the outer universe.

The unreal dream was like a maze, and with the Watcher’s help, Jovian gradually succeeded in escaping it.

...

Jovian turned around. In that false yet real dream, he could still see himself suppressing the entire Warp, the Chaos Gods trembling before him, and the Emperor’s sons cutting down every illusion in their path. Jovian shook his head, turned aside, and looked at the Watcher.

For a moment, Jovian wondered whether this Watcher truly needed his help, or whether he had come into this dimensional maze under orders from some greater existence to haul someone out.

"..."

Jovian shook his head and exhaled slowly. He stopped thinking about beings beyond his understanding and turned back to the things he actually could do.

"You said you need my help. What exactly do you need?"

With his hands behind his back, Jovian asked the Watcher what he wanted.

"Time, space, mind..."

The moment he heard the question, the Watcher instantly slipped into work mode and began reciting his usual opening narration right in front of Jovian.

"Fuck, it’s just the two of us here. You can skip that long, useless, time-wasting narration. Nobody likes listening to you narrate anyway."

Jovian waved a hand, summoned a hamburger with cosmic energy, and stuffed it into the Watcher’s mouth.

"Mm..."

"Well, there’s an Ultron in one universe, and he’s caused a bit of a problem..."

The Watcher swallowed the burger in a few bites, wiped the ketchup from the corner of his mouth, and spoke with a guilty look.

"Ultron caused a bit of a problem?" Jovian paused, then frowned. "Is that a small problem? Be honest with me, is that really a small problem?"

"All right, fine, I admit it, it’s a little bigger than a small problem..."

The Watcher held two fingers in front of Jovian to show a tiny gap between them.

"And how big is this little problem?"

Jovian narrowed his eyes and looked at the Watcher with a very friendly expression.

"All right, all right!"

"Jovian, please help me. That Ultron got the power of the Infinity Stones. He wiped out every living thing in his own universe, discovered the secret of the multiverse, and now the entire MCU is about to go under..."

The Watcher looked helpless. If he had any other choice, he would not have come to Jovian. But if he did not come to him now, the whole universe was finished.

"I refuse."

Jovian rejected him instantly, without even thinking. Infinity Ultron was far too dangerous. He had no desire to get involved.

"In battle, any item you obtain, and any spoils you take afterward, you can keep. I guarantee it on my personal honor, and I promise no one will stop you."

The Watcher was helpless after hearing Jovian refuse, but he was not panicking. He had a trump card.

"Infinity Ultron isn’t some glass cannon like Thanos."

There was a trace of worry between Jovian’s brows.

"So that means you can’t help me?"

The Watcher sighed. If Jovian could not be relied on, then he would have to find someone else.

"Heh, you misunderstood me. What I meant was that the loot from the fight alone isn’t enough. I’ll need a little extra compensation."

Jovian patted the Watcher on the shoulder and smiled with perfect calm and courtesy.

...

The Watcher suddenly felt like he had boarded a pirate ship.

"One full set of Infinity Stones."

Jovian named his price.

"..."

"Do whatever you want. I didn’t hear anything you said, and I didn’t see anything you’re planning to do. Until this crisis is over, I’m just a blind man who can’t see clearly."

The Watcher plugged his ears and stared up into the sky, pretending not to hear or see anything.

"Then I’ll take that as agreement."

Jovian rolled one shoulder, loosened up a little, and prepared to begin the job.

...

The Watcher continued pretending he could not hear a single word Jovian said, fully committed to his role as a deaf blind man.

The MCU...

On a blue planet filled with total silence...

"Space, Time, Reality, Power, Mind, Soul..."

"The moment Ultron gained a body, Thanos arrived carrying the other Stones. Then a flash of red light split Thanos clean in half the instant he set foot on Earth!"

"Ultron picked up the remaining Infinity Stones from the ground. At that moment, all six were united. Infinity Ultron was born!"

"Once Ultron fused with the Infinity Stones, he understood everything. He decided there was only one way to bring peace to the universe, eliminate every living thing in it..."

"After that, Ultron slaughtered everything in his path, and in the end he wiped out every living creature in his universe. No one could stop him!"

"And just when I thought he might finally stop, he discovered the multiverse, discovered me, and even smacked me around a few times!"

"And now, please enjoy this year’s biggest event from my perspective, The Watcher’s Revenge!"

The big bald Watcher spoke viciously, his eyes sharp and full of anger. He had come here for revenge.

"Watcher? Heh. So we meet again. I thought I had already beaten the courage out of you."

"But you still talk as much as ever. Are you done? Then rest for a bit. Let me help you, help you into an eternal sleep."

While the Watcher was explaining the whole background of the situation, a robot floating before him, holding a spear and radiating terrifying pressure from head to toe, spoke in a cold voice.

"Unfortunately, your opponent isn’t me."

Looking at Infinity Ultron in front of him, the Watcher felt a little nervous and shook his head. He was a civilized man. Brutish things like fighting had nothing to do with a gentleman like him.

"Oh? Then who is it?"

Ultron narrowed his eyes slightly at the Watcher.

"Me."

The instant Ultron heard the voice, a gigantic hand suddenly filled his vision.

"Hm?!"

Ultron’s pupils shook violently as he stared at the enormous palm.

Boom!

The instant that giant slap smashed into Ultron’s face, the space behind him shattered like glass.

Ultron vanished from where he stood and reappeared on a busy city street.

"Regarding Stark Industries CEO Tony Stark’s run for President of the United States, let’s hear what Mr. Stark himself has to say..."

A screen above Ultron’s head was broadcasting Tony Stark’s presidential campaign.

"Oh, about me running for President of the United States, on my very first day in office, I’ll order KFC to swap every Pepsi fountain in the country for Coca-Cola. Even though I only eat Burger King..."

Stark said it in a businesslike tone while wearing a suit.

"Wow."

"You really are a genius!"

The interviewer could not help praising Stark.

"Heh, of course. I’m the smartest man in the universe."

Stark gave the interviewer a slight smile, though he clearly felt her compliment had not gone far enough. He was not merely a genius. He was the number one brain in the universe.

"This is the first time I’ve ever seen a Stark this stupid."

Looking at Stark on the electronic billboard, Ultron raised his spear, ready to erase this universe’s Stark.

"What are you looking at?"

Just as Ultron was about to attack, a figure radiating golden light flew in front of him and slapped him across the face again.

Boom!

Space shattered once more. Ultron was sent flying by Jovian yet again, his body skidding away through the broken void around them.

"Ultron!"

Jovian stayed right on top of him, driving punch after punch into Ultron’s face.

Every so often, heat vision shot from Jovian’s eyes and slammed into Ultron’s body.

"Ah..."

Pain twisted Ultron’s face. Now that he had a real body, he could actually feel pain.

"That’s enough!"

Ultron roared, purple light blazing over his body. He punched Jovian away with one blow, that was the power of the Power Stone.

"Invader from beyond this world!"

"You think you can defeat me?"

With the Infinity Stones in his possession, Ultron now seemed to understand everything and see through everything. The Power Stone unleashed its endless might, hurling Jovian so far that his figure vanished into the end of the world.

"Outsider, I will kill you!"

Ultron roared and turned into a streak of light, chasing after Jovian’s vanishing figure.

"At the final moment of Avengers: Endgame..."

"In a normal universe, this long war would end with Iron Man, Tony Stark, standing before all the heroes and speaking that classic line that brings everything full circle!"

"But in this universe, Iron Man failed. Thanos once again wore the Infinity Gauntlet loaded with all six Infinity Stones, and this world was about to be destroyed. Hm? Wait, what’s that?"

High above the stars, a bald man was narrating everything when the sky suddenly split open, and a flash of light caught his attention. That was the variable.

"I am inevitable!"

On Earth, across the battlefield where the army of heroes clashed with Thanos’s forces...

Thanos had once again put on the Infinity Gauntlet, blazing with endless energy. He grinned at the heroes before him. This time, he would leave no one alive.

...

Stark frowned as he looked at Thanos, his heart full of guilt. He knew this was his responsibility. Tony Stark silently turned to look at Doctor Strange behind him.

...

Strange said nothing. He only shook his head.

"Goodbye."

Thanos spoke as he began to snap his fingers.

But just as Thanos was about to do it, a burst of white light flared before everyone on the battlefield.

When the white glow faded, a tall man stood there, holding all six Infinity Stones in his left hand, while his right hand hovered in the air in a choking gesture.

An invisible force had clamped tightly around Thanos’s throat.

"I’m your father!"

The handsome man looked at Thanos and tossed out that one short line.

"I get it now, this is the one winning condition you were talking about. So that’s it, if we wanted to win, then our timing had to be exact, not one second too early and not one second too late. That’s why you wouldn’t tell us, because you were afraid we wouldn’t control the timing right. Tell me I’ve got that right, Doctor!"

Tony Stark’s eyes lit up when he looked at the handsome man. He turned around and asked Doctor Strange.

...

Stephen fell silent for a moment. Don’t start making things up. He had never said that Earth would be saved at the end by something like this.

"..."

After thinking it over, Stephen sighed.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s exactly what happened."

A look of profound wisdom flashed in Stephen’s eyes. He really was the finest Sorcerer Supreme of them all.

OC note: I have to admit the last few Chapters drifted a little too far, so I want to apologize. So for now I’m putting Warhammer on pause and going back to the different comics storylines.
