This Time, I Choose Humanity! - Chapter 29: Ivan’s squad
"Ha, I’ve heard about you. The only weapon user in the Castellan family!" Lena exclaimed as she stared at Ivan, not too bothered about his ability.
Ivan blinked at the girl and said nothing. As for the other two members, they stared at Ivan in silence. They knew about him as well, the Paladin amongst mages.
After Ivan introduced himself, it was Lucas’s turn.
The boy stated his name and then informed the group of his Twingo.
"Twingo, what type of bird is that?" Lena asked curiously, she had never heard of such a bird before.
"It’s a small bird that can fly quietly and help me to see far, it’s not suitable for fighting," Lucas explained with an embarrassed smile.
"Oh, I see," Lena replied, and then turned to the last two students.
The boy with the huge physique spoke first.
"Aaron Baxil, Earth element."
Hearing the boy’s introduction, Ivan couldn’t help but ask why he didn’t make it into a squad. After all, the earth element was powerful even at the early stage.
Aaron’s body seemed to shrink slightly after Ivan asked that question, and his face turned a little red; he said shyly.
"I-i can only control spells that are connected to the ground, I’ll lose control once they leave the ground."
"I see," Ivan replied, realising that Aaron was currently ignored simply because he couldn’t send a huge boulder flying at his targets.
’He can still be of use,’ Ivan thought before shifting his attention to the last student, everyone else did.
A blonde-haired girl with yellow eyes who looked to be around 16 years old stared back at them with nervousness in her eyes. Ivan and Lena were from a first-rated family while Aaron was from a second-rated family, it was obvious that the combination was making her uncomfortable.
Lena noticed this and moved closer to the girl before grabbing one of the girl’s palms with both of hers.
"Don’t be nervous, we’re going to become a squad so feel free to speak. Our squad won’t be able to take first place if you’re too nervous, don’t you want to use the mana chamber and get stronger?" Lena said with a serious expression.
Ivan stared at the green-haired Lena. He had barely known her for a few minutes but suddenly felt that a serious Lena wasn’t quite right.
Hearing Lena’s words, the blonde-haired student nodded slowly and forced herself to calm down. After which she opened her mouth and said.
"My name is Juliet Devarus, I’m a musketeer." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Ivan looked at Juliet, silently surprised. He wasn’t the only one, the rest of the group was also stunned. Everyone knew how powerful musket weapon users were, their ability to fire powerful shots as long as they had enough mana was enough to make others jealous.
Not only that, their attacks were one of the fastest amongst other weapon users with means of long-range attacks, and the more mana they used, the stronger the attack!
Imagine Juliet firing a single shot with all of her mana, it was probably enough to take out a Level 2 warrior despite her being a weak Level one warrior!
"Really? Then why aren’t you in a squad?!" Lucas asked, he couldn’t understand why someone like Juliet was left out. They had assumed she would possess an odd ability like Ivan or Lucas, but a musketeer???
Seeing the group’s reaction, Juliet rubbed her left arm and slowly said that she was being targeted by another student in her class. The student was from a second-rate family and had also awakened the musketeer-class like Juliet.
During their combat classes, Juliet had performed better than her, causing the other party to get angry. Since Juliet was from an ordinary family, the other party started targeting her, which is why the rest of her classmates avoided her.
They didn’t want the attention switching from Juliet’s head to theirs.
"What? How dare someone pick on my squad member? Tell me her name, I’ll deal with her for you!" Lena voiced out with wide eyes after listening to Juliet’s story, she was clearly pissed.
Aaron stared in silence. Although he wasn’t very good as an earth mage, he was from a rated noble family so others couldn’t bully him.
As for Lucas, he looked at Ivan at this moment. He was from an ordinary noble family which was better than Juliet’s, yet he would have ended up in the same state if not for Ivan.
As for Ivan, he looked at Lena and told her to calm down. They would talk about it after the assessment.
"We’ve wasted too much time here, the other squads are already gathering points." He said as he glanced at the students in front of him.
’A plant mage, a musketeer, an earth mage, and a Twingo summoner, not a bad matchup at all.’ Ivan thought to himself. Since their targets were Orcs, Ivan felt that his squad should be able to handle things very easily compared to other squads.
"Hmm, we should get to know each person’s ability a bit more and immediately go in. I’ll go first," Lena said and then told the group that she could currently control a single large vine and her range of control was twenty meters.
Ivan nodded, feeling impressed. Lena blinked at him, hinting that it was his turn.
Ivan "..."
Do I always have to go after you?
Regardless, he still summoned his sword and shield. He didn’t bring out the ones that his parents had given him but used his mana to condense a round shield and a one-meter-long sword.
"I can change the shape and size of the shield, and I can also control it without touching it," Ivan said as he made the shield float around himself while taking on different shapes.
"I didn’t know a Paladin could do that," Lena said while staring at the floating shield with sparkling eyes, clearly surprised. Lucas and the others were the same, they didn’t know a Paladin could control their shields like that.
They weren’t the only ones. In the distance, the Dean and his crew were silently spying on Ivan’s group.
"Oh, he can do that already? I thought only Paladins above Level 2 warrior rank could do that?" One of the board members asked in surprise.
Not a lot of people who awakened the Paladin-class had managed to go so far in their warrior journey so there wasn’t much information.
"Interesting," the Dean mumbled and continued to watch.
Back at where Ivan’s group were standing.
"What about the sword, can you also control it?" Lucas asked as Ivan made the sword and shield disappear.
"No, I can only do that to the shield," Ivan said before adding in his thoughts.
’For now,’
According to his knowledge, Skrivaloks who awakened the Paladin-class were able to control their additional item after the second awakening.
And yes, not all Paladins had swords and shields. While the shield was compulsory, the second item could be anything.
Some even had two shields!
After Ivan was done explaining what he could do, Lucas was next.
"My Twingo can fly soundlessly, making it difficult to detect. Its special trait is that it can share its view with me, letting me see whatever it’s seeing." Lucas said, that was all he knew for now.
Ivan nodded, deciding not to add details and moving to the next student.
Aaron Baxil.
"I can control the ground within an area of fifty meters around me, but my spells can’t leave the ground," Aaron explained, no longer as shy as before.
Ivan nodded, already thinking of a lot of ways that Aaron could become a nightmare to his opponents.
’Fifty meters, that’s literally a domain!
Heck, if he had enough mana, he could probably open the ground and swallow his targets before burying them!’
Next was Juliet.
"My mana core only has enough mana to fire ten normal shots before running out of mana, my strongest shot was able to destroy a Level two warrior rank dummy." She said,
"Are there delays between your normal shots?" Ivan asked, recalling that some musketeers needed a few seconds before shooting after releasing the previous shot.
"No, I can fire them rapidly." Juliet shook her head.
"What about your aim, how strong is it?" Ivan asked again.
"I can easily hit anything within 30 meters, it’s a bit difficult once they move out of this range," Juliet said softly.
Everyone "..."
Monster!
Even Ivan had to admit that Juliet was a rare talent amongst musketeers. She was only at the Level 1 warrior rank and was already so freakish!
He felt that with a team like this, clearing a blue dungeon wouldn’t be impossible.
"Okay, now that we all know what we can do, let’s go in. But first, we need a squad leader." Lena voiced out and gazed at Ivan with a big smile.
Ivan "..."
"I’ll lead, any objections?" He said and looked at the other three.
Lucas didn’t have any issues with following Ivan, so he shook his head.
Juliet and Aaron looked at Lena. Although Ivan was from a first-rate noble family, he was still a Paladin; they felt it would be better if Lena became the squad leader.
But looking at the girl, it was clear she wanted Ivan to lead. So they also shook their heads, not objecting to the idea.
"Good, let’s head out." Ivan nodded and then started heading for the dungeon gate where the group of oldies were waiting with smiley faces.
