Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work
Chapter 322: Suspicion
"That roommate of yours named Zhang Mengdi is a petty person." On the way back, Xu Ancheng looked at Yi Roujing and said, "Although she didn’t directly participate in your incident that time, she did provide gossip to others behind your back. She has no filter on her mouth and she looks down on the poor while favoring the rich."
Yi Roujing looked at Xu Ancheng with amusement, "This is the first time I’ve heard Mr. Xu speak ill of someone behind their back."
"I’m not one to gossip about others usually. If I do, it’s because someone I care about has been wronged." Xu Ancheng smiled, a twinkle in his eyes, "I even went out of my way to find out about your roommate’s background in her hometown. I really didn’t expect someone like her could get into Jing University. Even if her academic qualifications are sufficient, her character surely isn’t."
Yi Roujing was a little startled, "What did she do?"
"When Zhang Mengdi turned eighteen, she got married to the youngest son of the production team’s leader in a neighboring village and had a daughter. At twenty, she went to the county city and met an accountant at a coal mine, who was a widower of a similar age and had no children. She promptly stirred up a divorce with her husband, left behind her breastfeeding daughter, and married the accountant."
"When the college entrance exam was reinstated, she took the exam while being pregnant, and when the admission notice from Jing University arrived, Zhang Mengdi resolutely aborted the child, divorced the accountant, and came to Jing City to attend university."
Yi Roujing listened, dumbfounded, looking at Xu Ancheng in disbelief.
"Her family played a major part in this, having a motivating influence. Whether it was marrying the team leader’s son or the accountant, it was all to benefit her younger brother. The latter even directly secured him a formal job at the coal mine."
"Such a person only needs a bit of incentive to sell someone out instantly. They’re self-serving and easy to manipulate, just keep that in mind and be careful." Xu Ancheng held Baozi, not forgetting to free a hand to ruffle Yi Roujing’s soft hair.
"You can interact with the others in your dorm; they’re nice." Xu Ancheng continued.
"Haha, don’t tell me you’ve checked their backgrounds too?" Yi Roujing said with a twitch of her lips.
"Yes, not just because of your incident, I started checking them out right after taking you to register." Xu Ancheng replied.
Yi Roujing raised her eyebrows, "Don’t tell me it’s related to some fatal weakness of the Deng family?"
Xu Ancheng smiled, his own smart wife could probably not be fooled.
"Perhaps." Xu Ancheng said helplessly, "I’ll tell you my suspicions but don’t get involved, I’m afraid it might be dangerous for you."
"Being honest is the right approach, Mr. Xu’s awareness isn’t bad." Yi Roujing, having Xu Ancheng’s word, wrapped her arm around his, rubbing her head against him.
Baozi watched their disregard for his presence, already accustomed to it, not at all sad; in fact, he was happy.
After walking for a while and still not hearing his parents’ conversation, Baozi asked in confusion, "Won’t Dad tell?"
Xu Ancheng lightly tapped his son’s forehead, "Little smart one, it’s enough that Mom and Dad are clever, you just need to play well for now."
Baozi furrowed his eyebrows slightly, nodding his head.
By the time they got home, Baozi had fallen asleep on Xu Ancheng’s shoulder, only then did he seem like a child. Yi Roujing gently smiled, undressing her son and placing him in the warm blanket, quietly shutting the door, she gave Xu Ancheng a meaningful look, and they went back to their room.
"Go ahead."
"I suspect Cheng Yijin isn’t the child of the Cheng Family’s eldest master." Xu Ancheng got straight to the point.
Yi Roujing was slightly surprised, "Doesn’t the Cheng Family know if their child is really theirs? Could it be like when I gave birth to Baozi, and the mother and daughter from the next bed sneakily switched babies?"
Hearing this, Xu Ancheng sighed and pulled her onto his lap. "My other concern is this, fearing you might recall that incident and feel distressed or scared like before."
"Also, don’t casually get involved. I’m afraid if the Deng family knows the truth, they might harm someone. With your nature, you wouldn’t stand by, and if anything happens to you, what would I do?" Xu Ancheng said earnestly.
Yi Roujing put her arms around Xu Ancheng’s neck, "Don’t worry, I’m not that much of a saint. I know how to protect myself and help within my capabilities. You and Baozi are the most important to me, I won’t act recklessly for you both."
"Good to know." Xu Ancheng kissed her.
"Now you can tell me."
"When I first saw Ren Xuejuan, she seemed familiar, so when she bumped into you, I took another look at her." Xu Ancheng said, "The Cheng family over the years actually had not only Cheng Yijin as a daughter, the current family head of the Cheng family used to have a sister who disappeared during the Republican era."
"Disappeared without a trace, neither dead nor alive." Xu Ancheng sighed, "You know how close the Xu family is to the Cheng family, especially after my mother disappeared, my father never gave up looking."
"Perhaps because they found camaraderie in their situations, Old Master Cheng is very close to my father and frequently sought him out for conversations over the years."
"After my father found my mother and moved her grave to Jing City, Old Master Cheng specifically went to pay respects at her grave, my father knew he was treating our family’s matter as a kind of emotional support." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
"My father has two black and white photos, a family photo of the Cheng family, and one of the sister; Old Master Cheng specially printed more and gave them to my father."
"After I returned to the Xu family, my father told me in detail about our connections with families in Jing City. You also know I have a good memory, and I remember seeing those photos, so at first glance at Ren Xuejuan, that’s why I was surprised." Xu Ancheng explained.
"You were surprised?" Yi Roujing said with amusement, "Mr. Xu doesn’t easily show emotions, you didn’t say anything, so I didn’t suspect a thing."
"Ren Xuejuan’s husband is quite capable." Xu Ancheng showed a hint of admiration, "He noticed right away and blocked my view. I later inquired about it with Yizhong. They, being in the military, are somewhat aware of each other, and Fang Zuxin is known to be number one in the western region."
"He was transferred to Jing City for a vital mission, though much of their work is confidential."
"So your implication is that Xuejuan is a child of the Cheng family?" Yi Roujing was slightly puzzled, "Since you think Xuejuan resembles the Cheng family grandaunt, why not suspect that Xuejuan is her descendant, instead of getting switched with Cheng Yijin?"
"Hmm, I did consider that initially." Xu Ancheng smiled, "But after looking into the Deng family, I ruled it out."
