Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work
Chapter 339: You Really Are Ugly This Way
"Junxi, Junxi—" Now belonging to Room 305, Rong Junxi, originally from Room 308, was walking down the corridor when she heard the greetings from her former roommate and went in with a smile.
"Junxi, are you doing well over there?" her former roommate cautiously asked.
Rong Junxi nodded, "Very well, everyone is very friendly and enthusiastic, they’re good comrades." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Rong Junxi’s personality was somewhat understood by her former roommates after half a month’s interaction; she was an innocent, lively little girl, someone people generally liked, and who wouldn’t lie.
Thinking of the drastic change in Zhang Mengdi’s expression and voice just now, the people in Room 308 felt a bit uneasy.
"Did they mention what happened with Zhang Mengdi, why did they change her room?"
Rong Junxi shook her head, "I don’t know, Sister Cuizhu and the others haven’t said anything."
"Didn’t mention any gossip about Zhang Mengdi?"
"Nope," Rong Junxi shook her head, with innocence in her eyes.
"Were we deceived?" A roommate from Room 308 questioned.
As they returned to their own room, people from Room 305 were also discussing.
"Boss, what’s the relationship between that girl and Zhang Mengdi? Her name sounds like she’s a sister, but why does Zhang Mengdi react as if she saw...?" Gong Jue’e didn’t finish, but everyone understood.
"That girl’s no longer a girl; like me, she’s been married and has a daughter," Yu Cuiyu replied, "But I didn’t expect her daughter’s health isn’t good, just mentioned she’s in the hospital, don’t know how serious it is."
Yi Roujing knew some things about Zhang Mengdi’s hometown situation, but it was the first time she’d heard the name Zhang Mengtian; she didn’t understand.
Being pulled by Zhang Mengdi to a deserted corner, Zhang Mengtian remained expressionless throughout.
"What are you doing, trying to kill me?" Zhang Mengdi looked at Zhang Mengtian and pressed his voice sharply.
"Mili is sick and needs money," Zhang Mengtian forced a smile, "If it wasn’t for this reason, I wouldn’t have come back to Jing City."
"If she’s sick, can’t she be treated at home? Must she come to Jing City?" Zhang Mengdi’s face twisted, her expression terrifying.
"Zhang Mengtian, you’re so ugly like this." The woman who should be called Zhang Mengtian looked at Zhang Mengdi calling her Zhang Mengtian, it would be confusing even for Yi Roujing and the others if they were present.
The twisted expression suddenly froze, and she looked around in fear. Seeing no one, she sighed in relief, "I said, don’t call me that. You volunteered back then..."
"Volunteered?" The girl laughed, deep mockery on her face, "You trapped me, registered me in your household, made me choose between being bullied by your brother when I grew up or switching identities with you."
"But you didn’t suffer much, and because we saved you, you didn’t have to be trafficked, sold off as a child bride to some stranger. Don’t forget the past eight years in our home; we fed you, clothed you, or you wouldn’t be where you are now."
"Haven’t I repaid being an ox and a horse for these eight years, working for work points?" The girl smiled bitterly, "How can people be so wicked? Obviously, you ruined my life, but now you act like a benefactor in front of me, with a pseudo-compassionate look, truly disgusting."
"You..."
"No need to say more, just give me the money," the girl interrupted with a raised hand, "I won’t say anything recklessly, but for Mili’s medical expenses, you must give it to me. I know you have subsidies; taking it a thousand steps back, Mili is your daughter."
"I..." Zhang Mengdi took a deep breath, rummaging through her pocket, and finally found some change, counting, "I only have three dollars."
"Next month, when the money comes, I want half, until Mili recovers," the girl said seriously, "This way, you remain Zhang Mengdi, and I remain Zhang Mengtian."
"Got it," Zhang Mengdi gritted her teeth and agreed.
"If you have time, you can go to Jing City Central Hospital to see Mili," Zhang Mengtian suggested.
"No need," Zhang Mengdi said and turned to leave.
Zhang Mengtian curled her lips in a cold smile, took a deep breath to regain her composure, and headed to Jing City Central Hospital. But first, she bought some fine rice, so when she arrived at the hospital room, the obedient Mili sitting on the bed sweetly called out on seeing Zhang Mengtian return, "Mom—"
"Mom will make you rice porridge," Zhang Mengtian, to save money, cooked her meals.
"Mom, eating cornmeal mush is fine, we don’t have money," Mili was very obedient, and Zhang Mengtian sighed inwardly, grateful that the child wasn’t like that cold-blooded heartless person, leaning entirely on this child for support or else she would have wanted to die two years ago.
The name Zhang Mengdi was given by the Zhang Family; however, she wasn’t trafficked but sold by her family, she remembered, as she was thirteen years old then. But the Zhang Family’s first response was that she was trafficked, and she didn’t explain. Being thought of as such might have been more comforting to her heart.
Fortunately, the textbooks that Zhang Mengtian studied were always shown to her, and after knowing she could read and write, the Zhang Family came up with the idea of switching names. Zhang Mengtian didn’t like studying, only occasionally went to school, and after junior high, even less so, bringing home homework for Zhang Mengdi to do.
At fifteen, Zhang Mengdi and Zhang Mengtian’s names were swapped. The two did look somewhat alike, and after being called long enough, people thought maybe that was always their name, since in the village, everyone was called by nicknames or simply ’girl’.
Because of herself, Zhang Mengdi got a high school diploma, allowing her to discuss marriage with the neighboring village’s production brigade’s youngest son. They thought it ended, but then the college entrance exam was reinstated.
At that time, Zhang Mengtian did waver, but with Mili by her side, she couldn’t bear to leave the child behind, even though she wasn’t hers.
In the child, Zhang Mengtian seemed to see her former self, neglected by the family, abandoned.
Zhang Mengdi abandoned her husband and child for a second marriage with a worker, later that man married someone else, leaving Mili as an orphan, finally sent back to the Zhang Family. After all, Zhang Mengdi was in the wrong back then, caught in infidelity before divorce, forcing the Zhang Family to swallow the injustice, so Mili was essentially raised by Zhang Mengtian.
With not a cent on her, Zhang Mengdi returned to the dormitory but turned to go to Room 305 before knocking.
Yu Cuiyu opened the door and saw Zhang Mengdi, even peered outside, not seeing the other girl.
"My sister went to the hospital to care for the child," Zhang Mengdi said, with guilt on her face, "Boss, I’m really out of options, could you lend me some money? My niece is about the same age as Baozi now, in the hospital. I just gave her all my money."
"Previously, I was reluctant to spend money on tickets, save to buy good food, all because someone at home needed me to send money back. I didn’t dare spend a penny more," Zhang Mengdi’s tears had already fallen.
