Chapter 78 | The Goblin Shaman would have been better
[Aiden’s POV]
The mutated goblin shouted as he moved towards Damien first and swiped his claws at him.
Damien dodged easily, and the next moment, the clawed hand of the mutated goblin fell down.
However, contrary to expectations, there was no blood or painful cry from the goblin. Only a crazed smile as he glanced towards others, and his amputated hand started regenerating, albeit slowly.
"We have to attack him nonstop so that he doesn’t easily adapt to our attacks. Keep alternating between magical and physical attacks." I ordered.
Azravael was the first to make a move this time; large blood spears moved towards the goblin as he tried to defend it with one hand.
As the goblin successfully defended against the blood spears with only minor cuts. Donald attacked him from behind with his sword, causing a pained gasp to leave the goblin’s mouth.
Seeing their leader a bit agitated, other goblins tried to move towards the leader.
"Don’t let the remaining goblin reach near him. He may absorb them to increase his powers," I commanded to the rest.
Everyone else focused on eliminating other goblins while Damien, Regalia, Donald, and Azravael subdued the mutated goblins.
Meanwhile, I also eliminated the goblins running towards the leader while keeping an eye on the leader’s fight.
Even after a few minutes, all the other goblins were almost eliminated. However, all the attacks on the leader seemed fruitless. His regeneration was much faster than the orc’s while also matching him in strength.
The only plus point at the moment was that the continuous attacks of Damien and others didn’t give him the time to counterattack.
However, suddenly he moved with greater speed towards me. I was keeping partial focus on him, so I dodged his attack as his punch landed on the ground.
Sensing the opportunity, I immediately created a small construct of a hand in fist form and punched him directly on the sides.
He skidded a step back while I moved sideways. Damien appeared beside me.
"Apologies, Master," he stated.
"No need to worry about that at the moment. We need to deal with him first." I responded.
The mutated goblin eyes fixated on me like suddenly I had become a prize. He also wasn’t very talkative, so it was slightly difficult to guess his action from body language alone.
"Any deduction on how to defeat him yet?" I asked.
"His skin is tougher than an ogre and also devoid of blood, while his regeneration rate is higher. I noticed the speed decreasing but not at an alarming rate."
"At this moment, this looks like a fight of attrition, Master," Damien explained.
Before I could form a strategy, the goblin conjured numerous pointed fire spears and rained them down on us.
Damien, standing near me, moved like smoke as the next moment 3 fire spears aimed at us were cut into multiple pieces.
Others also defended themselves while Azravael erected a blood shield to protect others.
"Well, if he wants attrition, then let’s give him,to him but time your attacks with each other. Don’t give him room to maneuver and do as he pleases." I shared my decision.
I shifted my focus from other goblins, almost exterminated, to the leader goblin. Keeping it simple, I formed two hand constructs of the size of a human and punched after every magical attack from Azravael and Regalia.
For a moment, everything looked under control as the goblin’s body was riddled with injuries even with his super regeneration. I thought the fight was nearing the end.
However, the next second a black circle spread from the legs of the goblin as the center.
"Watch out, everybody," Damien urged loudly.
Everybody backed up begrudgingly; I also jumped backwards from this surprise attack.
As I backed up, I saw every dead goblin being absorbed and melting in the circle and disappearing like they were never there.
"Attack him; he is absorbing the dead bodies," Azravael shouted just as I was about to speak.
I followed my thoughts as I attacked with constructs from gauntlets as I landed outside the devouring circle.
Azravael, Regalia, and Damien focused their attacks on him, but he erected some kind of barrier to safeguard himself.
After noticing the unsuccessful attack on the goblin leader, I switched my attack to the corpses of goblins that had yet to be devoured by the circle.
I didn’t even have to say anything as others followed suit, except Azravael. He kept attacking the leader with blood spears and other constructs of blood, keeping him occupied.
As the corpses of the goblin started turning into paste from being burned to a crisp, the first true emotional response came from the mutated goblin.
"How dare you weaklings interrupt my ritual?" he bellowed with anger.
"Is he just roaring or saying something, boss?" Thane asked from behind.
"Something about being us weaklings," I responded.
As the goblin expressed his anger over damaged corpses, the black circle disappeared.
The goblin’s appearance had changed, as he has become taller and more muscular than before.
All the damage done earlier was gone; he became better than he was when we started our attack.
"This is his last transformation; he doesn’t have any dead bodies now. So make every attack count," Azravael spoke to spark enthusiasm.
Though for a second, all our attack and work seemed fruitless as the leader grinned, eyeing us, probably thinking of which one of us to attack first.
I was feeling fine except for the frustration regarding this situation. However, I was seeing fatigue accumulating on their faces. In this situation, Azravael’s words seemed to have worked, as everyone readied themselves for one last assault.
With this motivation, we charged ahead towards the only goblin alive on the battlefield.
"Let’s keep it simple; control his movements first, then cut off his limbs." I spoke aloud our next course of action.
Thane conjured a bone field around him to limit his movements, but before any attack could land on him properly, he wriggled his way out of it.
"Tsk, that slippery bastard," Thane cursed.
"I’ll help," Regalia said, joining Thane to help block the goblin movements.
With the help of Regalia’s blood spikes and Thane’s bone field, the goblins’ movement slowed down a little as Donald’s sword attack landed on the left shoulder of the goblin.
A pained growl escaped from the goblin’s mouth as it broke from the captivity before Donald could attack again.
"He didn’t break through, but his strength has increased from before," Damien shared.
I racked my brain over my own attack plan. The plan was simple, but the increased power of the goblin was a problem I didn’t account for.
An idea seemed to surface in my mind: "Azravael, Thane, Regalia, and I will try to control his movements. Damien and Donald, you guys will have to work on the attack," I shared my updated strategy.
"Lead the way, boss," Thane added.
Following my words, Regalia and Thane repeated their attacks, binding the leader goblin for a moment.
Before he could try and break free, Azravael formed four blood pillars around him, confining him further.
Damien and Donald carried out their attacks while the speed of the goblin was slowed. Multiple cuts appeared on his body as attacks from both landed.
It took me a few extra seconds longer than I intended, but as my preparation was completed, four chains, two from each hand, appeared.
First they circled around the pillar, then coiled around the limbs of the goblin, finally stopping his movements entirely.
"Now is the time," I shouted as I pulled the chains with all my strength; my sigils also lit up faintly as I exerted my full strength.
Azravael also helped me form blood ropes around my chains and pull them tighter. Now, the goblin became totally immobilized.
Damien and Donald attacked in sync; both of their attacks seemed continuous until both hands of the goblin separated from his body.
But they didn’t stop here, as they attacked the goblin’s legs while he roared in anger, trying his best to free himself but was unable to. As he also lost his legs, he continued bellowing in anger.
The goblin spoke again angrily, "Stop this instant; I am just about to become a Sovereign. You pathetic people can’t stop my ascension."
"Finally, the bastard is squirming," Thane commented.
"Tear him to pieces," I commanded.
Donald and Damien didn’t relent, and within a few moments, the entire body of the mutated goblin was sliced into pieces, and the goblin died an agonizing death.
"Ahh, a goblin shaman would have been better," I commented as I exhaled from exhaustion.
