True Apocalypse Game
Chapter 35: Rose-colored Land
A Geiger counter is a counting instrument specifically designed to detect the intensity of ionizing radiation (alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and X-rays).
It uses a gas-filled tube as a probe. When voltage is applied, any radiation passing through the tube ionizes the gas, creating an electrical pulse. A connected electronic device records these pulses, measuring the radiation level over time.
The piercing shriek of the buzzer tore through the darkness, striking terror into the heart.
Shen Feng looked at the Geiger counter in his hand. The screen displayed a number: 5000.
5,000 millisieverts per hour.
’Fuck!’
The hand Shen Feng used to hold the Geiger counter trembled, and his legs felt weak.
From a health perspective, the maximum amount of radiation a person can safely absorb in a year is 1 millisievert.
A single X-ray exposes you to a mere 0.1 millisieverts of radiation. But right now, the radiation level outside his heavy-duty protective suit was 5,000 millisieverts per hour!
If he were exposed to this environment, he would absorb five thousand times the annual limit of radiation every hour. His skin and internal organs would almost instantly liquefy, and he would die from massive internal bleeding.
He’d be turned into a pile of rotten flesh.
If he hadn’t finally understood the hint from the True Apocalypse Game and bought the heavy-duty radiation suit, he’d probably be a festering mess by now, suffering a fate worse than death.
The most terrifying thing about radiation is that it’s an enemy you can neither see nor touch. It can tear you apart in silence, and the death it brings is horrific.
The shock was even greater than what Shen Feng had felt when he first encountered the Skinners.
Fortunately, after the life-and-death struggles of the Stone Statue Apocalypse, Shen Feng’s mental fortitude had grown much stronger.
Taking a deep breath, Shen Feng surveyed his surroundings, starting to assess his environment.
It was the dead of night. A half-moon hung high in the sky, accompanied by the twinkling Stars, illuminating the land as if it were day.
But there was nothing around him, only an endless Gobi wasteland.
The ground wasn’t just sand and dirt; it was a thin layer of rose-colored glass, shimmering with a magnificent and enchanting light under the moon and stars.
He seemed to be at the bottom of a large crater, like a great glass bowl resting silently on the earth.
Beautiful, yet deadly.
This appeared to be the epicenter of a nuclear detonation.
Geiger counter in hand, Shen Feng walked cautiously outward, afraid the glass on the ground might tear his protective suit.
The sound of crunching glass, the heavy sound of his own breathing inside the suit, and the shriek of the Geiger counter’s alarm intertwined into a strange and morbid symphony.
Fortunately, as he continued walking outward, the reading on the Geiger counter began to drop rapidly.
Four thousand... three thousand... two thousand...
When he finally reached the edge of the crater and took a step out, the Geiger counter’s reading dropped to eight hundred.
Still, it wasn’t safe here.
Shen Feng continued heading for the periphery. Looking up, he saw the wilderness was flat and empty, save for a few sparse, monstrously shaped trees in the far distance.
Shen Feng walked onward, step by step, listening to the sound from the Geiger counter as his brow gradually furrowed.
He walked for over three hours, but the scenery barely changed. It was still the same monotonous desert, with only the occasional glimpse of sun-bleached bones half-buried in the sand.
Some of the bones were human, others animal. He wondered if they belonged to poor souls who had wandered into the high-radiation zone and died.
He hadn’t seen any sign of city ruins, not even the wreckage of a single building, which made it impossible for him to determine what had happened to this world.
The radiation from a low-yield nuclear explosion dissipates quickly, but that only applies to an air burst.
If a nuclear bomb detonates on the ground, it causes severe radioactive contamination of the soil and water. The fallout from a high-yield, megaton-class bomb, in particular, can remain for tens of thousands of years.
If every bomb in this world’s past nuclear war was a ground burst, then everything might be contaminated, and humanity would have been completely wiped out.
Forget about the Ape Race; even the Transformers would get fried by the radiation on this dead planet.
’I hope it’s not the worst-case scenario...’
Shen Feng’s heart was filled with worry.
Fortunately, after he had walked for four or five hours, the Geiger counter’s alarm finally grew much quieter. The reading dropped to 200 and was still falling.
Shen Feng let out a long sigh of relief. It seemed the worst-case scenario had not come to pass.
By now, the oxygen tank inside his heavy-duty radiation suit was almost empty, with less than an hour’s worth of air left.
Shen Feng took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and began to imagine being hunted, picturing all sorts of gruesome scenes.
A few seconds later, his eyes snapped open. His pupils had become vertical slits, like a cat’s, and the muscles all over his body bulged.
Then, he shot forward like an arrow loosed from a bow, sprinting wildly into the distance!
His speed far surpassed that of an ordinary person, rivaling a moving vehicle.
After sprinting for half an hour, the reading on the Geiger counter finally dropped rapidly to below 10 microsieverts. However, Shen Feng didn’t stop; he continued to run at full tilt.
Finally, a dilapidated, ruin-like town appeared in his field of vision, looking as if it could collapse at any moment.
The Geiger counter’s buzzer gradually fell silent. Its reading had dropped below 1 and soon went to zero.
Only then did Shen Feng come to a sudden halt. He tossed his backpack aside, checked the area with the Geiger counter, and relaxed once he saw there was no issue.
He then opened his pack, took out a bottle of pre-mixed decontamination solution, and poured it all over the outside of his suit, starting to scrub vigorously.
After emptying the entire bottle of solution, Shen Feng dove into a nearby sandpit and began rubbing himself all over, as if taking a sand bath.
After a few moments of this, he quickly began to strip off the heavy-duty radiation suit. Once he was out, he snatched up his Quantum Backpack and fled madly toward the distant town ruins without a backward glance.
After passing through that heavily contaminated zone, the outer layer of the protective suit and the Geiger counter were now irradiated. They were no longer usable.
If he lingered too long, he’d probably get irradiated himself.
As Shen Feng ran, he took out another Geiger counter and kept his eyes on the reading.
Over half an hour later, he arrived in the dilapidated town ruins and heaved a long sigh of relief.
There was no radiation here.
To be honest, the ultra-high radiation levels from before had truly terrified him.
Besides, that stuff seriously affects one’s reproductive ability, and he wasn’t even an adult yet!
The town ruins were truly just ruins, with only crumbling walls half-buried in yellow sand. There were no traces of human activity whatsoever.
Even the interiors of the buildings had long been stripped bare, with nothing left behind.
Shen Feng managed to find a three-story building that was still relatively intact. He climbed to the roof using a sturdy load-bearing wall and found a clear spot to lie down amidst the gaping holes.
He hadn’t slept at all tonight and had spent the entire time running on edge. He was exhausted.
"Player has successfully entered the Post-Nuclear Wasteland Apocalypse. This Doomsday World is a mass extinction world caused by a global nuclear war. Game Missions: 1. Find the cause of the global thermonuclear war. 2. Find the nuclear weapons control programs of the three major pre-war powers. 3. Obtain a surviving nuclear warhead. 4. Beware of the dangers of radiation and avoid death."
After glancing at the game missions on his wristband, Shen Feng looked up at the countless stars in the sky and fell into a deep sleep.
Early the next morning, the sound of pounding footsteps, mixed with shouting, jolted Shen Feng from his sleep!
He quickly crawled to the edge of the roof, took out his binoculars, and looked in the direction of the sound.
He saw two people on horseback chasing someone who was running on foot!
They were all dressed in tattered rags, looking like beggars, but in their hands, they held gleaming Long Sabers!
As for the person being chased, their knees were bent backward!
