Unforeseen Entanglements
Chapter 29
Christian’s hand found mine as we watched Tom’s SUV disappear into traffic, his fingers intertwining with mine like he was afraid I might vanish too.
"Come on," he said, his voice tight with barely controlled rage. "We need to get somewhere safe."
His BMW was parked two blocks away, and Christian kept scanning the streets like he expected Tom to circle back with reinforcements. The protective energy radiating from him was so strong it made my wolf purr with contentment despite everything that had just happened.
"Where are we going?" I asked as he started the engine.
"Somewhere my father can’t reach us." Christian’s jaw was clenched so tight I could see the muscle twitching. "Somewhere we can figure out what the hell just happened."
The cabin was hidden deep in Shadow Ridge territory, miles from Harold’s main estate and the pack gathering areas. It looked like something out of a fairy tale—log walls, a stone fireplace, and windows that overlooked a lake that reflected the full moon like scattered diamonds.
"It’s beautiful," I said as Christian led me inside.
"It was my mom’s retreat." His voice softened slightly. "She used to come here when pack politics got too overwhelming."
The interior was cozy and lived-in, with comfortable furniture and bookshelves that suggested someone had actually spent time here. Christian immediately started a fire, his movements efficient but distracted.
My adrenaline was finally crashing, leaving me shaky and exhausted. I sank into the couch, my vanilla, and jasmine scent probably reeking of stress and fear.
"Tell me about the incomplete rejection," Christian said, settling beside me with careful distance. "Everything. From the beginning."
I closed my eyes, remembering that awful day in Colorado. "Tom and I had been... involved for about six months. Nothing serious, just dating, getting to know each other. His pack was pushing for a formal mating, and I thought maybe it could work."
Christian’s scent spiked with something that might have been jealousy, but he stayed quiet.
"The ceremony was supposed to be this big pack celebration," I continued. "Formal mating bond, marking, the whole traditional setup. But when it came time for the actual ritual..."
"What happened?"
"He said I wasn’t what he wanted." The old humiliation burned in my chest. "Right there in front of everyone. Said I was too weak, too independent, that I’d never make a proper pack mate."
Christian’s wolf snarled silently. I could smell his rage building.
"So he rejected me publicly, and I accepted it. Walked away thinking it was over." I laughed bitterly. "Turns out public humiliation isn’t the same as legal severance."
"The formal ritual requires pack elders and specific ceremonies," Christian said, his Alpha knowledge kicking in. "Without proper completion, the initial bonding attempts leave supernatural remnants."
"Which Tom has been using to stalk me for eleven months." My skin crawled at the thought of him monitoring my emotions, my location, and my activities with other men.
Especially my activities with Christian.
"He’s been watching me this entire time," I whispered. "Tracking my movements, knowing where I went, who I was with. God, Christian, he probably knows about us."
Christian’s protective instincts flared so strongly his scent filled the entire cabin. "How long has he been planning this?"
"He said he spent eleven months studying pack law, building alliances." I met Christian’s dark eyes. "Your father was part of his plan from the beginning."
Christian’s expression went nuclear. "My father sold you out to your stalker."
"Looks like it." I tried to keep my voice steady, but the betrayal hurt. "Tom has legal documentation, pack elder approval, and the works. He’s not just some obsessive ex—he’s got legitimate grounds to drag me back to Colorado."
"Over my dead body."
The words came out with such Alpha authority that my wolf immediately responded, purring with attraction and gratitude. Christian meant it. He’d literally die before letting Tom take me.
"Christian," I said softly, "you can’t fight pack law. If Tom’s claim is legitimate—"
"I don’t care if his claim is backed by the supernatural supreme court." Christian moved closer, his sandalwood and cedar scent wrapping around me like protection. "You’re not property to be claimed."
But even as he said it, I could see the conflict in his dark eyes. His wolf was raging with territorial fury, demanding he claim me immediately to eliminate Tom’s legal standing. His human side knew that forced mating was just another form of ownership.
"What if he’s right though?" I whispered. "What if the incomplete bond is affecting my judgment? Making me think I want things I don’t actually want?"
"Do you feel manipulated right now?" Christian asked, his voice gentle despite the Alpha power radiating from him.
I considered the question honestly. Did I feel compelled to be near Christian? Absolutely. But it felt natural, right, like coming home after a long journey.
"No," I admitted. "But Tom said—"
"Tom said whatever he needed to say to mess with your head." Christian’s jaw clenched with renewed anger. "He’s been stalking you for a year, Sophie. Using supernatural bonds to invade your privacy and monitor your life. Does that sound like someone who has your best interests at heart?"
He had a point. Tom’s behavior wasn’t protective—it was predatory.
"But the pack law—"
"Fuck pack law." Christian’s Alpha authority made the words ring with finality. "You want to know what I think about ancient traditions that treat women like breeding stock?"
I nodded, suddenly desperate to hear his perspective.
Christian took my hands in his, his dark eyes burning with conviction and something deeper. "I think any law that doesn’t respect your right to choose is bullshit. I think Tom Bennett can wave his legal documents around all he wants, but they don’t mean anything if you don’t consent."
My wolf practically melted at his words. This was what I’d been hoping for, what I’d needed to hear.
"And if he tries to force you back to Colorado," Christian continued, his voice carrying a deadly promise, "he’ll have to go through me first."
"Your father will support him," I pointed out. "Pack politics, alliances, whatever game Harold is playing."
"My father can go to hell." Christian’s expression was grim but determined. "I’m done pretending his corruption is acceptable."
We sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the fire crackling while I processed everything. Tom’s legal trap, Harold’s betrayal, and Christian’s unwavering support despite the political cost.
"What happens now?" I asked finally.
Christian was quiet for a long moment, his Alpha mind working through strategies and possibilities. When he looked at me again, his dark eyes held fierce determination.
"Now we fight back," he said simply. "We find legal challenges to Tom’s claim, we expose my father’s corruption, and we build our own alliances."
"And if that doesn’t work?"
Christian’s smile was as sharp as a blade. "Then we make our own rules."
The fire cast dancing shadows across his features, making him look dangerous and beautiful and completely committed to my protection. My wolf purred with contentment, finally feeling safe despite the chaos surrounding us.
"Christian," I said softly, "what if all of this is just the mate bond talking? What if we’re both being influenced by supernatural biology?"
He considered the question seriously, his Alpha honesty preventing easy dismissal of my concerns.
"Maybe we are," he said finally. "Maybe the mate bond is affecting our judgment, making us feel things that aren’t entirely our choice."
My stomach dropped. Was he having second thoughts?
"But you know what?" Christian continued, his voice carrying absolute conviction. "Even if supernatural biology brought us together, what happens next is still our decision."
He stood up and moved to face me directly, his Alpha presence filling the cabin with protective strength.
"No one owns you, Sophie," Christian said, his dark eyes blazing with truth and determination. "Not Tom, not pack law, not ancient traditions, not even me. You choose your own fate, and I’ll defend that choice with my life."
