Vampire With A System
Chapter 61: Power Of The Guardian
There was no snow left on this open ground because the intense sunlight of the previous three days had completely melted it away, but the weather remained exceptionally cold, though Evan and Peaker couldn’t even feel the biting frost because of the sheer desperation of their current situation.
Evan and Peaker felt completely surrounded, which they obviously were.
A cold sweat broke out across Evan’s forehead, the thick, freezing sweat that only comes when the calculations stop and you know you are utterly done.
Meanwhile, Peaker was shaking his head in sheer disbelief, violently closing and opening his eyes as if trying to force himself to wake up from an absolute nightmare, thinking that this might all just be a dream.
Evan couldn’t help but look at Peaker’s frantic, broken expression, and a sudden, distant philosophy quote from Earth echoed clearly through his mind:
I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was myself. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man.
In front of them stood the two formidable Commanders, fifty peak stage Fledgling Watchers, and the Leader of the clan, Shu Hui, with Ghost standing directly on his right side like a mocking monument of betrayal.
Behind them, four figures were smoothly gliding down from the jagged hill, their movements effortless and terrifying; they were all Ascendant vampires, the absolute peak of the mortal cultivation realm, the Supreme Elders of the Shu Clan.
Evan stared at the terrifying display of cosmic force, his knuckles whitening as he looked over his shoulder.
"Why are they coming for us anyway? We are dead even with the people in front of us."
Peaker let out a dry, rattling breath, his eyes fixed on the approaching figures.
"Probably because my father is the Sect Leader, they would want information, won’t they?"
Evan turned his head violently, looking at Peaker with wide, disbelieving eyes.
"If that is the case as you say, then why the hell did you come here? Why did the sect even send you?"
Peaker’s shoulders slumped, his voice dropping into a hollow whisper.
"Because no one ever knew except me, father, mother and... Ghost."
Evan let out a long, exhausted sigh, the weight of the universe crushing down on his chest.
"You are a good man, Ron Walter... we did have a great time with each other to be honest—" Evan abruptly stopped, a rare, genuine smile breaking through his artificial mask as a few bitter tears welled up in the corners of his eyes, because he knew there was absolutely no benefit in acting cold while being this close to death.
"But I guess every good story has an end... I wish I could protect you and myself... I really do."
Hearing Evan use his true name, Peaker’s trembling lips slowly curved upward into a weary smile, and he gave a little, breathless laugh.
Meanwhile, the clan leader with his fifty men suddenly burst into a sprint, running heavily toward both of them across the muddy field.
While behind them, the four Supreme Elders had already touched down at the base of the hill.
The four of them moved forward, their residual cultivation aura so incredibly strong and oppressive that Evan and Peaker could feel an overwhelming, suffocating pressure crushing their lungs, even though these monsters were still a hundred meters away from them.
Evan swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone, and right at that exact moment, a blinding, neon blue interface shattered the darkness of his vision as the system appeared:
[ You Are The Guardian ]
[ Anything You Wish To Protect Will Be Protected By The Will Of The 3rd Heavenly Realm’s Owner ]
"This..." Evan mutters, his voice catching in his throat.
[ DO YOU WISH TO PROTECT RON WALTER AND YOURSELF ]
’Yes of course,’ Evan thought frantically, slamming his mental intent against the interface.
[ After This Action System Will Go Offline ]
For a single, agonizing moment, nothing happened.
The cold rain continued to pelt his skin, the four Supreme Elders were still walking methodically toward them, while the horde of guards in front of them were running relentlessly forward, their blades drawn.
However, the very next instant, the heavy, cloudy sky directly above Evan and Peaker started to unleash a massive, deafening lightning sound that shook the very foundations of the valley.
Then, in a display of absolute cosmic authority, just above where Evan and Peaker were standing, the dark clouds violently parted, tearing away to create a perfectly naked, open circle of sky while every other inch of the horizon remained covered in thick, black storm clouds.
Then, the surrounding clouds began to rapidly circle around the edge of that naked sky circle, the vortex giving off another series of strong, localized lightning sounds.
Sensing that something was fundamentally wrong with the laws of the world, the four Supreme Elders instantly stopped walking, their eyes wide with caution.
Seeing the ascendants halt, the vanguard running towards Evan and Peaker stopped too, their momentum breaking in confusion.
Suddenly, just eight feet away from Peaker and Evan, a massive, intricate golden pentagram formed directly on the muddy ground, contained within a perfect golden circle.
The golden pentagram, along with the golden circle covering its boundaries, immediately started to shine with an incredibly heavy, bright light that completely blinded the darkness of the mountain night.
Three heavy, catastrophic golden lightning strikes hit the center of the pentagram one after another, the concussive force blasting the rain away.
And at that exact place, right within the burning light of the pentagram, a terrifying creature slowly came into existence.
It possessed two sharp, protruding horns, absolutely no eyes, and no nose on its smooth face; it had a complete, brilliant white body that was extraordinarily muscular.
’This is the same thing I saw in my dream in the academy...’ Evan thought.
