Chapter 70: Health crystals

Despite escaping in time, the tails of the foxes were already severely damaged, and they didn’t even bother focusing much on Trevor anymore. Their main concern at that moment was how to recover from the massive burns their tails had received.

It was truly unfortunate that out of their entire bodies, their tails were the only parts not covered in flames.

That made them far more susceptible to pain, especially burns.

Trevor watched the foxes struggle as they died one by one before his eyes.

He kept looking despite his heavy eyelids, forcing himself to stay conscious until the last creature finally collapsed. He had only 4/100 HP left, and it was still gradually decreasing.

By now, Trevor’s Eyes of Hades had already been automatically deactivated by the system. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Finally, Trevor decided to let everything go.

He laid his head down, his movements becoming sluggish and unresponsive, while his eyes slowly began to dim.

But then... a figure began approaching him.

He couldn’t make out what the figure looked like at all. His vision had become increasingly blurry as time passed.

The figure that approached him appeared, at least vaguely, to be female. It had a slender waist and a graceful outline.

But aside from that, from where he lay on the ground, he could barely see anything anymore.

The figure knelt beside Trevor and, without saying a word, pushed a pill into his mouth.

The moment Trevor’s lips made contact with it, his face twisted in disgust.

It was arguably the most bitter and revolting pill he had ever tasted in his life.

Not knowing what it was, he immediately tried to spit it out, but the female figure didn’t allow him that luxury.

She pressed her hand firmly over Trevor’s mouth, forcing him to swallow the pill no matter what.

Trevor struggled, but he was far too weak and feeble to resist. In the end, he was forced to swallow it.

Almost instantly, a tremendous pain erupted throughout his body.

It was unlike anything he had ever experienced before.

The pain surged violently through every vein in his body.

Trevor rolled on the ground as if in severe trauma, his legs twitching uncontrollably as a strained shout escaped his lips.

Then suddenly, the pain began to subside.

Slowly, it started to fade away.

Trevor opened his eyes again. All the burning sensations he had felt from fighting the fire foxes had completely vanished.

It was almost as if he hadn’t even fought at all.

Standing in front of him was Elena, the very woman who had saved him earlier from the fox attack that nearly cost him his life.

"That was impressive thinking, but very poor magic usage," Elena said calmly.

"By the way, I had been gathering all the healing stones I could find in the cave while you battled the foxes. At least that was the only way I could help, since I’m not allowed to directly assist you with the task," she explained, looking at him with eyes that clearly said, I’m sure you understand.

"Thank you very much," Trevor replied calmly.

He tried his best not to reveal the confusion clearly visible on his face.

[Congratulations, you have just completed Level One of the Void Game. Please wait for further instructions.]

The system chimed.

But Trevor wasn’t particularly interested in that right now.

After all, everyone knew that this was a slice-of-life game.

That was exactly what made it such a perfect environment for improving one’s skills, whether in combat or even in relationships.

Normally, players were assigned a guide who would help them improve to a certain level.

In his case, that guide was definitely Elena.

Aside from that, level missions would appear occasionally, but for the most part, life would continue as normal.

With the way the game was designed, one could even form romantic relationships with NPCs.

However, there had been no confirmed cases of anyone attempting that, so it was still unclear what would actually happen if someone tried it in real life.

That entire chain of information was already common knowledge.

What Trevor was actually waiting for... was his system notification.

But he heard nothing.

He had genuinely believed that since he had received card upgrades for slaying monsters in the dungeon, it would naturally apply everywhere.

He thought that killing monsters in any setting would grant him loot or rewards from the system.

But that wasn’t the case.

He had received absolutely nothing.

Not even a single card upgrade.

Could it be that the creatures weren’t strong enough? Trevor thought calmly.

But even that didn’t sound right.

He had received rewards for killing an F-ranked dungeon creature earlier that morning, so this situation felt completely inconsistent.

"What on earth are you still doing on the floor? We still have a long way to go."

Trevor immediately realized he was still lying on the ground.

He stood up quickly, directing his gaze straight at Elena.

But the moment he stood, he felt it.

His mana had been heavily depleted.

"Good. You can feel it, right?" Elena said calmly.

Trevor simply nodded, still confused by the sudden weakness and sense of powerlessness.

"Well, the crystal doesn’t work without mana, so it used your own mana to heal you," Elena explained with a slight pause.

"I’m sorry it had to come to this. Despite how poor your magic control is, you’ll have to meditate and absorb as much mana as you can from the environment. It won’t be much, but it should be manageable," she added with a slight nod.

"After I teach you how to fight with limited mana, we’ll ascend the Valley of the Dead. That’s the only place where mana crystals can be found. Once we replenish your mana, we can finally return to the town," Elena said calmly, as if it were a simple and ordinary task.
