When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds
Chapter 278: Tang Li 6
The Beauty System flew in front of Tan You. "Host, why didn’t you let Tang Li’s grandparents tell Li Lanzhen about Fang Xiang?"
’It refused to believe its host was doing it for Li Lanzhen’s own good.’
Tan You said, "I don’t have any evidence right now, and besides, I can’t be bothered to argue with Li Lanzhen. When it comes to people with something wrong in their heads, I never try to change their way of thinking. It’s a complete waste of my time."
"Whether or not Li Lanzhen ever recognizes her own brother-doting nature or sees through the Li family has nothing to do with me. In any case, none of her schemes will ever succeed. On the contrary, keeping her around will be entertaining to watch."
Tan You didn’t think she was being cold at all. ’If some people don’t see themselves as a joke, why should I be the one to point it out?’
"Besides, if Li Lanzhen found out, she’d just turn around and tell Li Wanjun. Wouldn’t I be shooting myself in the foot?" Tan You raised an eyebrow. She trusted that the old Tang couple would be on her side. After all, her surname was Tang, not Li.
Right now, Tan You was busy building her career, so she let the old Tang couple take the lead for the time being. Once she had things sorted out on her end, she would slowly settle the score with the Li family.
The old Tang couple knew that the favor Tan You had asked was a big one. As soon as they hung up with Tan You, they packed a couple of changes of clothes and drove straight to the city.
The old couple had their own keys to the apartment. As luck would have it, they came face to face with Li Wanjun the moment they walked in. The old woman glanced at Li Wanjun, then at the backpack on the chair, her expression unreadable.
Li Lanzhen’s face fell when she saw her parents-in-law. She forced a smile. "Mom, Dad, what are you doing here?"
The old woman was fuming internally, but she put on a smiling face. "I was just thinking it’s been a while since I’ve been to the city, and you must be lonely living here by yourself. I came to keep you company."
"You... have a guest?"
Li Lanzhen waved her hands frantically. "No, it’s Wan Jun. He got off work early today and came to see his aunt."
As she spoke, she glanced at the bags the old couple was carrying. "Is that luggage?"
Grandma Tang was quick to act. She directed the old man to take their luggage to the guest room. "It’s just a few changes of clothes. If we need anything else, I’ll just have the old man go back home and get it."
The old man went into the guest room without a word, but his ears were pricked, listening intently to what was happening outside. ’His old wife might be a decent fighter, but there was still a man in his prime out there.’
Li Lanzhen forced another laugh. "Tang Li... didn’t tell me you were coming."
Grandma Tang smiled, but her words were blunt. "Do I need to announce my arrival when I visit my own granddaughter’s home? Lanzhen, it’s not my place to criticize, but when a guest arrives, you should start preparing a meal. Otherwise, people will say our Tang family has no manners."
Grandma Tang deliberately emphasized the words "my granddaughter’s home" and "the Tang family." Li Lanzhen and Li Wanjun both understood her meaning, of course. The expressions on the aunt and nephew’s faces changed instantly—guilty, yet furious.
Li Lanzhen managed a weak smile. "We’re all family, there’s no need for such formalities..."
Grandma Tang was insistent. "That won’t do. A guest is a guest, and we must take good care of them. When our Li Zi went to her uncle’s house, she didn’t even get a single apple. Little Li, you won’t get that kind of treatment here at the Tang family’s home. We’re the most hospitable people you’ll meet."
Li Lanzhen couldn’t hide her embarrassment. "That was more than ten years ago, Mom. You’re still bringing it up."
Grandma Tang wasn’t about to coddle Li Lanzhen. "I’m not wrong, am I? You’re her mother. You watched your sister-in-law give an apple to every single person but skip over our Li Zi, and you just stood there and did nothing."
Li Wanjun knew it was his time to speak up. "Grandma Tang, my mom was being foolish back then. Please don’t hold it against her. She realized her mistake later, but Tang Li stopped visiting our home, so she never had the chance to apologize to her in person."
In his opinion, Tang Li had too much of a temper. There was a whole story behind that incident. When Tang Li was ten, Li Wanjun’s great-grandmother passed away. As the Li family’s maternal granddaughter, Tang Li was naturally expected to be there.
However, the Li family and the Tang family were on bad terms at the time because of a dispute over the Tang family’s house. So when Tang Li’s family of three arrived, the Li family was very cold to them.
When an elder in the family passed away, apples would be placed as offerings before the memorial tablet. The longer-lived the elder, the more prized these apples were. People believed the apples carried good fortune, and eating them was a way to pass that fortune down to future generations.
There were a total of six apples offered at the memorial. The Li family had many relatives and friends, but only a few youngsters in the family. When it came time to hand out the apples, Li Wanjun’s mother carried the tray of six apples and gave one to everyone, deliberately skipping Tang Li.
Even a youngster who wasn’t related to the Li family got an apple, but their own maternal granddaughter got none. Tang Li wasn’t one to take things lying down, and she immediately caused a scene.
It caused the Li family a great deal of embarrassment at the time. After returning home, Tang Li told the old couple what had happened. Grandma Tang had held a grudge about it ever since. ’How could she, her own maternal grandmother, and her own mother, just stand by and watch the child be mistreated like that?’
Li Lanzhen hadn’t expected the old woman to bring this up now. She bit her lip, looking aggrieved. "Mom, it was so hectic back then, I didn’t have time to pay attention..."
"Alright, save it." Grandma Tang waved her hand dismissively. "Old man, go buy some groceries. We need to properly host our daughter-in-law’s nephew from her side of the family. Oh, and buy a few extra apples while you’re at it."
The old man barely suppressed a laugh. "Alright, I’m going. Little Li, do you have any dietary restrictions?"
Li Wanjun forced a smile. "I’m not a picky eater. I feel bad for dropping in so suddenly. How about I treat you both to dinner? I just got paid, so you don’t have to worry about saving me money."
"Young people should definitely be frugal." Grandma Tang shook her head. "There’s so much pressure on you youngsters these days. You have to rent an apartment for work, right? And pay for utilities? Plus transportation and food. You all live on such a tight budget. We can’t add to your burden."
Hearing Grandma Tang mention rent and utilities, Li Lanzhen could no longer sit still. "Mom, there’s actually something I wanted to talk to you about."
She paused, glanced at Li Wanjun, who was looking at the floor, and gritted her teeth. "It’s like this. Wan Jun just started a new job. And since he only graduated last year, he hasn’t saved up much money."
"I was thinking, we have a spare guest room, and the apartment isn’t far from his company, so it would be convenient for him to commute..."
Before Li Lanzhen could say more, Grandma Tang, still smiling cheerfully, cut her off. She was so angry she had become completely calm. "I understand what you mean. I have no objection to you looking out for your nephew from your side of the family."
Li Lanzhen’s face lit up. ’Are her parents-in-law agreeing?’ But Grandma Tang’s very next sentence made her freeze.
Grandma Tang continued, "There are only three rooms in this apartment: the master bedroom, Li Zi’s bedroom, and the guest room. You plan on letting Little Li stay in the guest room? Where are your father and I supposed to stay? Out on the street?"
"No, no, no, that’s not what I meant," Li Lanzhen said, waving her hands frantically. "Li Zi’s... isn’t Li Zi’s room empty?"
