When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds
Chapter 296: Tang Li 24
When Tan You met with the old couple from the Tang family, she naturally brought up Sun Zhicai. They knew of him.
The old woman said, "After I found out they were together, I made a point to ask around. They say this Sun Zhicai has a very good reputation. He doesn’t smoke, drink, or gamble, and he saves all the money he earns."
"And he’s very fair in his business at the market. Never short-changes his customers."
The old man added, "I heard his parents have passed away, so he’s the only one left in his family. His wife also ran off years ago. Maybe that’s why he works so hard to get ahead, having lost everything."
"He owns a house in his name. If your mother really gets together with him, she won’t have a hard life."
The old woman’s words were sincere. Although she disliked her daughter-in-law, Li Lanzhen, she had no intention of giving her a hard time. At most, she would just keep her distance.
Tan You didn’t voice her own suspicions. "I see. Have the Li family been causing any trouble for you lately?"
"How would they have the nerve to show up? Besides, my granddaughter is amazing," the old woman chuckled. "You look like you’ve lost weight again. Have you been working too hard?"
"I haven’t lost weight, I’ve actually gained some. It’s from my combat training," Tan You reassured her grandmother. "If the Li family shows up again, you have to tell me."
"Don’t worry, we cherish our lives. I’m still waiting to see my dear granddaughter settle down and build a career," the old woman said with a hint of chiding. "You just focus on your work. Your grandfather and I will definitely hold down the fort for you."
Tan You replied, "Of course I’m not worried. It’s because I have you two here that I can focus on my career with peace of mind."
She had to admit, having the old couple from the Tang family around in this world saved her a lot of trouble.
’If Li Lanzhen gets married now and has a good life, Tang Li probably won’t have to worry about her anymore, right? In any case, if Li Lanzhen wants to give it a shot, she could probably still try for a child.’
’Besides, Sun Zhicai is pretty much middle class. If he and Li Lanzhen really have a child, the kid probably won’t have to suffer much in the future.’
The more Tan You thought about it, the better her mood became. And her mood got even better when she saw the invitation Director Hu handed her.
"A premiere? Film Emperor Xie and Teacher You’s movie is about to be released?"
Director Hu said, "Have you lost track of time? It’s been almost half a year, hasn’t it? Besides, this film doesn’t have any special effects or anything like that to produce. Film Emperor Xie heard you were back and specifically had someone send the invitation to the set."
Tan You glanced at the invitation. "It says I can bring two people. Should I ask Sister Yun to come with us?"
Director Hu was clearly tempted. "Sure. My wife loves watching movies, especially premieres. We haven’t been to many before."
Tan You said, "Then let’s make Sister Yun happy this time."
The premiere was that weekend. Since they weren’t part of the main celebrity crowd, Tan You, Director Hu, and Sister Yun found their seats as soon as they entered the theater, keeping a very low profile the whole time.
Sister Yun whispered, "Film Emperor Xie is over there, and Teacher You... and that big-shot director..."
"So many people came. Looks like everyone is showing their support."
"I heard the film association gave it a very high score. I guess everyone wants to see what a movie that can get such high ratings is actually like."
Director Hu squinted at her. "Your... your ’friend,’ the great screenwriter, isn’t going to make an appearance at such an important event?"
Tan You rolled her eyes. "She prefers to keep a low profile."
"Right, ’low profile’," Director Hu said with a knowing smile. "Does your... your ’friend’ have any intention of writing another script? My skills aren’t half-bad, you know. I’m not asking for a blockbuster movie, a sweet little rom-com would be fine too."
A flash of amusement crossed Tan You’s eyes. "We’ll see. She’s busy right now."
’She really is busy right now.’
Director Hu pointed at her. "You sly fox. I don’t care. In the future, if your... your ’friend’ has a good TV script, you have to think of your golden partner here. I’ve directed TV dramas before, you know."
"We’ll see. She really is busy right now," Tan You said dismissively. She was busy. She had to check in on the parent-child variety show from time to time, and the dating show she was working on hadn’t even finished filming.
Her company had heard she had a new idea and was now hounding her for a proposal. Where would she find the time to whip up a script for a lighthearted rom-com? Even though it wouldn’t be difficult, Tan You just wasn’t feeling it.
The script Tan You had used to tempt Film Emperor Xie was, of course, not her previous work, *Prison Tyrant*. But that script was indeed a rare gem, and it had won her that trophy back in the day.
The memory of Lu Wen crying her eyes out on stage as she accepted the award made Tan You smile. Speaking of which, she kind of missed Lu Wen. After all, to Tan You, she was never just a one-dimensional client.
She was a living, breathing person of flesh and blood. They had spent decades together, day in and day out, and naturally shared a deep bond.
Director Hu also knew Tan You was a very busy person. But caught between the variety shows and the script he wanted, he was truly conflicted.
"Li Zi, these last few variety shows I’ve filmed have turned out great, but I have a dream too. I want to direct a hit drama..." He was willing to use any means necessary to get a script.
Seeing a grown, middle-aged man get teary-eyed in front of her gave Tan You a headache. "I’ll go back and... have my friend think about it. She’s very busy, so it won’t be anytime soon."
Director Hu’s tears vanished instantly. "Alright! With your word, I can rest easy. We’ll be waiting for your... your friend’s script."
Sister Yun stifled a laugh. She knew her husband had a tender, girlish heart, but she never expected him to use every trick in the book on Tan You—from pleading to throwing a tantrum—just for a script. Honestly, Sister Yun found it quite refreshing.
She wasn’t the least bit jealous. She knew that for someone like Tan You, whose eyes were set on the stars and the sea, she would never get bogged down by petty romance. That’s why Sister Yun was completely at ease with Old Hu’s interactions with Tan You.
The actors and celebrities made their rounds, making the place feel less like a premiere and more like a banquet hall. Only the area around Tan You and Director Hu was quiet, but Tan You kept feeling like someone was watching her.
Director Hu said, "You can’t keep secrets in this industry. Who told your friend not to show her face? People want to approach you, but they don’t know you well enough."
Tan You replied, "Then they can forget it. I’m just helping a friend."
Seeing Tan You refuse to admit it, Director Hu didn’t expose her. In the end, it didn’t matter if the script was from her friend or not. As long as he got a good script, he would be satisfied. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
The premiere went smoothly, and everyone quieted down once the movie officially started. Tan You also watched the film quietly. Although she had seen the original version before, she had to admit that this film was exceptionally well-made.
’As expected, talent can be found anywhere.’ In her last world, Tan You had indeed taken some directing courses, but her skills could only be described as mediocre, and the shots she filmed were unremarkable.
Later, Tan You stopped making things hard for herself and simply spent more time reading and studying computer science. After all, she couldn’t rely on the Beauty System forever.
