When the Side Character Gets a System and Travels through Difference Worlds
Chapter 397: Yanxi 5
Xu Jinwu knew about his daughter tutoring the struggling students, and he fully supported her. He was a kind-hearted man himself, so he would never object to her helping others.
He figured, so what if he had to come into the city to see his daughter? A little extra walking was good for his health, wasn’t it?
Tan You didn’t hold onto the money Xu Jinwu had given her. It was a heartfelt gesture from her father, so she deposited it in the bank the very next day. Of course, it did make a nice dent in her mortgage.
Men in Country H were typically quite chauvinistic, but Xu Jinwu was a clear exception. Tan You found herself contacting him more often; after all, he seemed like a very wise man.
Meanwhile, Tan You’s after-school tutoring sessions were a roaring success. The six underachieving students under her wing had all seen their rankings improve significantly. Seeing their progress, the students’ enthusiasm for learning grew even stronger. The two troublemakers who used to scheme about skipping class now dutifully reported for tutoring the moment school let out.
The transformation of these six students inevitably caught the eye of others—namely, other students who wanted to improve and even some parents who came looking for Tan You.
Tan You remained completely unruffled. "I’m just taking some extra time to tutor a few students from my class, and my workload is already at full capacity. Your child is a diligent student and already has excellent tutors after school, so they really don’t need my help."
"I also have no plans to open a private tutoring center. I quite like my work environment here at the school."
Tan You’s words left the parents feeling rather awkward. She was a math teacher, not their children’s homeroom advisor. Even if they wanted to press the issue, she was clearly unreceptive to any persuasion. What could they do?
They couldn’t help but envy those struggling students. How did they get so lucky? The parents of those six felt lucky, too. The truth was, life for the lower class in Country H was not easy. It was a country with a vast gap between the rich and the poor.
The families of these six students were all facing financial difficulties. One family ran a small street stall, which made their lives only a tiny bit better than the rest. Sometimes, when Tan You looked at these students, it was like seeing her former self.
Although she had said she was at capacity, when she was tutoring in the small classroom, she wouldn’t turn away other students who came to sit in. As a result, the number of students in the small classroom grew day by day.
Tan You didn’t mind. She remained focused on her original six students, basing everything on their learning pace. As for in-class quizzes and the like, she never graded the work of the newcomers, simply letting them correct their own papers with an answer key.
It was a Friday, and Tan You had the last two periods of the day. There were no evening self-study sessions on Fridays, so many students eagerly awaited the final bell, looking forward to a good rest at home.
After all, on Saturday and Sunday, they would have to report to their cram schools again.
When the day’s classes were over, all the students left the classroom except for her six. Tan You packed up her lesson plan. "Let’s go. Time to eat at my place."
"Okay! Teacher, let me help you!" an exceptionally pretty girl said, familiarly linking her arm with Tan You’s. "Teacher, what are we eating today?"
Tan You said, "Tonight, I’m taking you to run a stall. I’ve prepared a few little things."
"What little things?" another girl, Zheng Xue, asked from Tan You’s right side. Compared to the girl on her left, she looked more stoic, her lips pressed into a tight line. She clearly wasn’t the good-tempered type.
But in front of Tan You, she was always very well-behaved.
"You’ll see when we get there," Tan You said, unwilling to explain further. She wanted them to see for themselves.
When Tan You bought her apartment, she had also purchased a parking space. But since she didn’t own a car, the space had always been empty. Now, a food truck was parked in it. The pink truck was scrubbed clean, a delightful sight to behold.
The two girls and four boys circled the food truck twice before finally stopping. "Teacher, what are we going to sell? We don’t know how to cook."
Tan You said, "Let’s go upstairs first. If you don’t know how, you can learn. I’ve already prepared the ingredients. It’s all very simple stuff. You just need a pair of hands."
Upstairs, Xu Jinwu was already waiting. Seeing Tan You lead the students up, his face blossomed into a smile. "You’re here? I’ve got all the ingredients ready. Yanxi, come see if this is right."
Tan You’s eyes crinkled with a smile. "Dad, you’ve always been meticulous. I’m sure it’s perfect."
The students politely greeted Xu Jinwu. They came to Tan You’s place often and had met him a few times, so they had a good rapport with him.
"Alright, wash your hands and let’s get started. I’m planning on three products: ice cream waffles, sushi, and red bean cakes."
As she spoke, Tan You looked at the most rebellious student, Song Yuan. "Making the waffles is the most technical part, so I’m leaving that to you and Little Wu. I trust you can do a good job." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
The two boys immediately puffed out their chests. "Yes, Teacher! We guarantee we’ll get it done!"
Tan You smiled. "Jin Li and Little Snow, you’ll make red bean cakes with me. And you two will make the sushi. I’ll teach you how in a moment."
"We have limited time to practice, so you need to get the hang of it quickly. In a little while, we’re heading to the nearby food street to set up our stall."
Tan You had mulled over these three snacks for a long time before deciding. She had many ideas, but few were practical. Since these students didn’t really know how to cook, if she chose something difficult, they wouldn’t have been able to handle it.
So, she had to choose things that were novel, not commonly seen, and easy for beginners to learn quickly. Thus, these three snacks were the ones she picked. To be honest, she had even gone to the trouble of ordering the red bean cake mold online from Hua Country.
They practiced for an hour in Tan You’s spacious kitchen. With so many hands helping, all the ingredients were prepped in no time. Seeing that it was about time, Tan You smiled. "Let’s go. It’s time to see the fruits of our labor."
"From now on, you’ll run the stall on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. You’ll split the money you earn. It’s always good to have some money on hand; you never know when an emergency might pop up."
The students were already deeply moved. "Teacher, we don’t want the money."
"That won’t do. Active teachers aren’t allowed to have side businesses," Tan You said with a light laugh. "But there’s no such restriction on students. If you can make a living for yourselves through your own hard work, you’ll face the world with more confidence in the future."
The students knew that when Tan You made a decision, her word was law. They could only bury their gratitude in their hearts. "Teacher, we’ll work hard."
Tan You smiled. "No need for sappy talk. The most important thing is that you live well and have a promising future."
