The man nodded slightly and asked out of nowhere, "How is he?"

The driver answered at once, "His vital signs have stabilized. He woke up once, only for four or five minutes, then fell back asleep."

The man said blandly, "Mm, got it."

After replying, the driver walked over and opened the car door.

Their exchange was very short, just three or four lines, but Scarlett’s heart started pounding fiercely.

If she hadn’t guessed wrong, that man had just asked about Matthew Saxon’s condition.

Thinking that she was about to see Matthew Saxon, Scarlett just couldn’t keep calm. She was visibly excited, clutching George’s arm. "George, we’ll be able to see him very soon. I just heard the driver say Matthew woke up once. Sounds like he’s already out of danger."

George had heard the conversation between the man and the driver too.

He’d been skeptical the whole time, but now it seemed Matthew Saxon really was with this man.

Their Young Master had survived a great disaster; George was happy as well. He turned to Scarlett and said with a smile, "I knew the Young Master was born blessed. Every time he’s in danger, he always pulls through."

After they got in, the Rolls-Royce drove from the remote airport to the downtown area, then from downtown out to the suburbs. More than an hour later, it finally pulled into a villa district.

The car stopped in front of a European-style building.

The driver got out first, then walked to the back and opened the door.

After the man got out, he didn’t take Scarlett to see Matthew Saxon right away. Instead, he said to the driver, "Go let them know—we’ll eat in an hour."

"Yes, sir." The driver accepted the order and quickly went to notify the kitchen.

Only then did the man turn around again. His lukewarm gaze fell lightly on Scarlett, and in the same commanding tone he said, "Put your luggage away first, then rest for a while. In an hour, someone will call you downstairs for dinner."

Scarlett had no mind to rest or eat. She said anxiously, "Sir, could you take me to..."

"No." Before she could finish, the man cut her off bluntly. "Once you’re here, you follow my arrangements in everything. If you feel you can’t accept that, you’re free to leave at any time."

That line again...

He always liked using that sentence to threaten her. Wasn’t it just because he was sure she couldn’t possibly walk away?

Scarlett bit down on her teeth in anger. "Sir, I just need to see him first, just one look..."

She wanted to confirm as soon as possible that he really had been rescued. She was afraid the man was lying to her, tricking her.

If everything turned out to be a lie, wouldn’t she have been happy for nothing?

She’d already experienced what it was like to fall from heaven into hell once; she didn’t want to go through it a second time.

But the man didn’t care what she was thinking at all—whether she was happy or unhappy, sad or upset—none of that fell within his consideration or concern. He only looked at her with that same indifferent gaze and mercilessly rejected her request. "Miss Yates, what I promised you, I will definitely keep. I’ll let you see your husband, but not now."

"Right now I just want to get some proper rest and have a good meal. Once I’ve finished what I need to do, I’ll naturally take you to him."

"How can you be like this!"

George’s face darkened with anger. "The Young Madam’s request isn’t unreasonable. She only wants to confirm that the Young Master is truly safe. It won’t take much of your time. Why can’t you go now?"
