He stepped through.

The passage was instantaneous in one sense and not instantaneous in another. His foot crossed the threshold defined by the standing-person silhouette and the potential-color that had been the environment above the Fifth Gate closed behind him, the Lower Domain’s atmosphere present on one side and whatever the Middle Domain’s atmosphere was present on the other, and the transit between them was a single step that took as long as a step took and also felt like the step had been the entire journey.

He stood on the other side.

The Middle Domain was not what he had constructed in his mind during the ascent.

He had not constructed much. He had been careful about that, the Fifth Gate’s lesson about the limits of anticipation still present. He had let the unknown be unknown and had climbed toward it rather than toward a version of it he had imagined.

The Middle Domain’s entry environment was not a room or a platform or a landscape. It was presence. The specific quality of a space that operated at a higher tier than anything below expressed itself not as a visual environment but as a quality of being in it, the atmosphere here pressing against his cultivation framework in the specific way of something that was not testing but simply existing at a level above what the framework was built for.

He stood in it and let it be what it was.

The framework held.

Not comfortably. Not without real pressure against every layer of it, the genuine load of an environment operating above the Lower Domain’s ceiling finding every part of what he had built and pressing against it at that part’s actual capacity rather than at a calibrated test level. This was not the mountain’s assessments. This was the Middle Domain itself, indifferent and total, existing at this level regardless of whether anyone was in it or how prepared they were.

The incomplete parts were present and real and the environment’s pressure found them immediately, the incompleteness louder here than it had been under the First Gate’s amplification. He held them at their honest size without flinching from the increase in their volume.

He breathed.

His own two beats continued. The mountain’s beat was below, behind the threshold he had stepped through.

The framework stood on its own two beats.

Its depth is bounded only by the cultivator’s understanding of the Law they hold.

Primary Class Function: Absolute Removal. Any technique deployed by a Slaughter Sovereign against an identified obstacle carries an additional penetration property that scales with the depth of the Law’s comprehension. At foundational depth, the penetration property is present but moderate. At developed depth, the penetration becomes significant. At complete comprehension, the penetration is absolute.

Secondary Class Function: Momentum. The Slaughter Sovereign’s offensive output increases with each consecutive engagement. A cultivator who moves from obstacle to obstacle without interval accumulates momentum that multiplies the Law’s expression through each successive removal. The momentum persists until a significant interval interrupts the sequence.

He read the class description.

Slaughter Sovereign. The Laborer class that had appeared in a room full of people who found it laughable had become this.

He thought about the two classes together for a moment. The E-Rank Laborer at the beginning and the Slaughter Sovereign at the end of the path that the amplification system had built. The obstacle can delay, can wound, can require more than the cultivator currently has. It cannot permanently prevent the removal if the commitment is genuine.

Scaling: As the Law of Slaughter deepens in comprehension, Inevitable’s function expands. At foundational depth, it applies to obstacles the cultivator has explicitly identified and committed to. At developed depth, it extends to obstacles in the cultivator’s path that have not yet been explicitly identified. At complete comprehension, it applies to all obstacles on the path the Law has determined, whether or not the cultivator is yet aware of them.

He read the talent description twice.

Primary Sub-Class Function: Complete Identification. The Observer perceives the complete structure of any obstacle, entity, or environment within range. Not the surface. The complete structure. Weak points, internal architecture, energy composition, and the specific nature of what constitutes the obstacle’s capacity to persist. This information feeds directly into the Slaughter Sovereign’s removal function.

Secondary Sub-Class Function: Depth Reading. The Observer can read the depth of any Law held by any cultivator within perception range. This includes the cultivator’s own Law, providing continuous accurate assessment of the Law of Slaughter’s current comprehension depth and the specific edges of that depth.

He looked at the Sub-Class notification.

The Third Gate had been correct. At the time of the Third Gate’s condition, accepting the Sub-Class would have created misalignment. At Ascendant level, the misalignment did not exist. Observer and Slaughter Sovereign were not contradictions. They were complements, the perception function of the Observer feeding directly into the identification prerequisite of the Slaughter Sovereign’s removal function.

The Third Gate had tested his commitment to the Law over immediate gain. Passing that test had produced an outcome that gave him the gain anyway, correctly aligned, at the right stage.

He stood in the Middle Domain’s atmosphere and let all of it settle.

The pressure against the framework was still present. It would always be present here. The Middle Domain was not a space that adjusted to its inhabitants. Its inhabitants adjusted to it, the framework developing through the adjustment over time.

His framework had held the initial contact.

The Middle Domain was vast.

That was not a description. It was the only accurate statement. The space here did not operate at the scale that any Lower Domain environment had operated at. The Allheaven Expanse had been large. This was large in the way that the difference between a room and a continent was large, a difference in category rather than in degree.

He stood at the Middle Domain’s entry point and looked at it.

Somewhere in this space, the path the tenth note pointed toward had its beginning.

The Slaughter Sovereign’s Momentum function registered the quiet, the gap in engagement since the last obstacle removed.

There was no urgency in that registration. The Law noted the interval. The Law did not demand.

He looked at the Middle Domain.

Lei Bao emerged from the blade fully, the crackling sphere taking his position at Lin Yi’s shoulder and looking at the same vast space with the attentive presence of a Thunder Spirit who had been waiting for this since long before Lin Yi had found the blade on a path outside Jianghe.

The sword spirit was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, in a voice that carried everything the mountain had been and everything that was ahead, simply and without performance, "Little one."

Lin Yi looked at the Middle Domain.

"We are here," Lei Bao said.

Lin Yi stood in the entry point of the Middle Domain with the Slaughter Sovereign class and the Observer sub-class and the Inevitable talent and the foundational depth of the Law of Slaughter and the Emperor’s Pouch on his wrist and the tenth note inside it, and looked at the vast space ahead.

"Yes," he said.

He took the first step forward.
