Chapter 121: Chapter 121: Dust Phantom

Yena’s spear tip caught a leaping ghost right in the chest.

The golden runes burned the phantom into a cloud of harmless white ash.

Three more rushed in to take its place, their hollow mouths open in silent, terrifying screams.

Kai slammed his foot into the ground and pushed his freezing mana outward.

He targeted the blowing sand right in front of his boots, freezing the silica into a jagged wall of sharp glass spikes.

A ghost hit blindly into the barrier and shattered like a fragile mirror.

More illusions kept coming through the storm.

They whispered begging words, trying to trick his mind into giving up his canteen.

Kai ignored the haunting voices entirely.

He threw a wide arc of freezing water from his free hand, catching two phantoms in the chest and freezing their hollow cores solid.

Yena spun her spear in a deadly circle.

She protected their blind spots perfectly as she knew exactly how these desert monsters moved.

Kai shattered the frozen ghosts with a swift kick, clearing their immediate area to give them some breathing room.

They fought like a synchronized unit for several long minutes.

Kai built glass barriers to funnel the ghosts into narrow paths, and Yena burned them away with her runic magic.

The final phantom lunged directly at Kai’s face.

He ducked under the grasping hands and drove his dagger straight upward.

Freezing magic exploded from the blade, freezing the ghost into a solid block of ice before it even touched his skin.

The wind suddenly died down, and the swirling sand settled back onto the ground.

Kai stood up straight and sheathed his weapon. His lungs burned for oxygen, and sweat poured down his forehead.

Yena leaned heavily against her spear and took a long breath.

Her cotton undershirt clung tightly to her skin, completely soaked from the intense skirmish.

Kai stepped closer and raised his hand.

He gently wiped a streak of white sand from her sun-tanned cheek.

"You fight well for someone who pretends to hate company," Kai said softly, offering her a tired smile.

Yena swats his hand away quickly, but a highly amused smirk touches the corner of her lips.

"And you stare too much for someone pretending to be a gentleman."

"I never claimed to be perfect," Kai laughed, stepping back to give her some space.

"I just said I would be on my best behavior."

They decided to set up camp early because the fight had drained their energy reserves.

Finding a shallow hollow between two large rock formations, they built a small fire to chase away the rapidly dropping temperature.

Desert nights were cold, and the phantom had already stolen a lot of their precious body heat.

Setting up the camp took longer than usual. Their muscles ached from the sudden burst of adrenaline.

Kai fed his horse a handful of grain while Yena arranged stones for their fire pit.

"That ghost was too persistent," Kai mentioned, tossing a few dry branches into the pit.

"Do they always hunt in packs like that?"

"Dust Phantoms feed on desperation," Yena explained, striking a flint to light the kindling.

"They smell travelers carrying water and try to bleed them dry. You handled yourself well today, Kai."

"Was that an actual compliment?" Kai teased, sitting down on his mat.

"I should write this date down."

Yena rolled her eyes and settled near the growing flames.

The desert air cooled with brutal speed.

Kai unpacked a single wool blanket from his saddlebags.

He sat down near the fire and wrapped half of it around his shoulders. He held the other half open and looked up at Yena.

"You’re going to freeze over there," Kai pointed out.

"Come share the warmth before your teeth start chattering."

Yena hesitated for a moment, her eyes studying his face in the flickering firelight.

She finally sighed and moved over to sit right beside him, then pulled the remaining half of the blanket around her own shoulders.

Their sides pressed together beneath the wool.

Kai felt the soft warmth of her thigh resting right against his own.

He didn’t try to push his luck or make a move. He simply stared into the orange flames and enjoyed her quiet presence.

The silence between them felt highly charged and electric, filled with unspoken tension and mutual respect.

A soft chime rang out in his mind, bringing a welcome distraction from the distracting warmth of her body.

[Status Update: Minor mana boost applied]

’A free mana boost is always a good thing,’ Kai thought, closing the blue window with a mental command.

’But sitting here like this is definitely a much better reward.’

Yena shifted slightly under the blanket, leaning her head just an inch closer to his shoulder.

She didn’t say a word, and Kai knew better than to ruin the moment by talking.

They sat together in the cold desert night, letting the quiet fire crackle while the stars burned brightly above them.

Their journey continued the next day.

Ruined stone pillars poked through the rolling white sand like broken teeth.

Kai led his mare carefully through the ancient courtyard while Yena walked beside him.

She seemed much more relaxed today, letting the quiet desert silence fade away into actual conversation.

"This used to be a royal courtyard," Yena noted, trailing her fingers along a weathered stone wall.

She looked down at the sand, and her voice softened completely.

"My husband loved exploring places like this."

Kai looked over in surprise as she usually avoided talking about herself.

"Slavers took him and my little girl ten years ago," Yena continued softly.

Her eyes looked far away.

"I was out foraging when they raided our camp. I became a scavenger just to survive, so I stopped trusting anyone."

’Ten years is a very long time to carry that kind of pain,’ Kai thought, feeling a sudden ache right in his own chest.

Sera’s empty purple eyes flashed briefly in his memory.

He understood the bitter poison running through Yena’s veins.

Kai stopped walking and turned to look at her.

He did not offer empty pity as he knew she would hate it.

"I lost someone very important to me just a few weeks ago," Kai admitted quietly.

He kept his hands resting on his leather belt.

"I couldn’t save her, so I came to the desert to make sure nobody can ever take anything from me again."
