Zara

’Was he serious? Or was Alpha just trying to be funny?’ Nova was shocked.

’Alpha could be charming when he wanted to be.’ I rolled my eyes.

"Is it worth it? Do you want to get to know my family seriously?"

Alpha’s gaze flickered back to the stage, and he relaxed, leaning back in his seat and slumping his shoulders.

"Why not? Are you afraid to imagine me as your mate?"

’He was up to no good.’ Nova appreciated his Alpha.

’Alpha was challenging me again, waiting to see if I’d chicken out.’ I determined.

"I’m afraid they’ll tear you apart when the contract ends and think you broke my heart."

’Alpha was going to break my heart anyway, but my family didn’t need to know that.’ I shared my feelings with Nova.

Alpha’s gaze flickered to me, a hint of disbelief in his honey eyes. He took his time answering.

"Fair enough, but at least I’ll be able to meet them as your Alpha."

"Yes, you can. I’ll send them the invitations as soon as they’re printed. My brother will be there too, and he’s a real car enthusiast." I chuckled, imagining Ryan pestering him. With his knowledge of cars.

"I’d love to talk to him," Alpha Kane assured me.

We turned our attention as Amanda headed toward the ramp.

And damn, she could walk. The air around her seemed to freeze as she glided on slender legs, showing off her beautiful red-and-gold fur dress.

The male models’ whistles echoed throughout the room. She was well worthy of her place in the spotlight. The girl confidently walked to the edge of the ramp and, holding her head high, looked down at us.

She gave Alpha Kane a seductive smile, which disappeared when her gaze fell on our clasped hands. A glint of jealousy blared in her eyes.

"Sir, could you please come down the ramp with Amanda for a moment? I just want to see the chemistry," Halima asked, standing at the ramp.

My Heart, my stomach trembled, but not for the better, and I found myself praying Alpha Kane would refuse.

But to my disappointment, Alpha quietly placed his hand on my leg and stood up, heading for the two steps leading up to the dais.

Amanda grinned at me triumphantly, as if she’d won the lottery, and I just wanted to roll my eyes.

Moving her arms and hips, she returned to Alpha Kane and stood next to him.

’Didn’t she know he wasn’t interested in any commitments and that she would just be wasting her time and energy?’ Nova rolled her eyes.

Still, the thought of her touching him, but more importantly, the thought of him touching her, burned me inside. I clutched my pants at the knees, watching them with annoyance.

Halima and Ronald walked up onto the stage with Alpha Kane.

After a short, instructed conversation, everyone descended, leaving Alpha Kane and Amanda. Ronald, to my disappointment, came over and sat down in the seat Alpha Kane had just vacated.

No one in the pack dares to sit in the seat of the Alpha Kane, but in his office among humans, he is so kind that anyone can sit in his seat without the Alpha’s permission.

"Don’t they look good? Even their suits are the same. This will be..." "Peak," he said with a smirk, clasping his hands behind his head as if flexing his biceps.

I clearly didn’t understand this man. Just yesterday, he was grumbling about how she needed to be changed because she’d had surgery. More like he was mocking me.

"If it doesn’t work out, nothing will work out. I hope it’s epic, that’s what we’re aiming for," I replied calmly, understanding the game he was trying to play.

"I thought you’d be jealous. Isn’t that what girls do? Get jealous and fight over men."

I turned my head and narrowed my eyes at him.

"We have more important things to do than fight over men. There have always been men throughout history who fought over women, even went to war," I replied calmly, not rising to his bait.

"And didn’t women plot to attract the Emperor’s attention when he had several wives or concubines?" Rnald mused.

"Only because men put them in that position. If they could only love one woman, this wouldn’t happen." I clucked my tongue and leaned back in my seat to watch Alpha Kane walk down the podium again. This time, Alpha was holding Amanda’s hand, not mine.

"You’re clever, I understand why Mr Sterling is fascinated by you. Enjoy yourself, Zara, but remember my warning," Ronald chuckled, as if joking.

I didn’t understand this man at all. Sometimes I thought he was simply saying things to draw out what was lurking in the hearts of others.

Alpha’s gaze found us, and his face seemed to harden. Ronald waved enthusiastically to him, and I watched silently.

Their walk began, led by Halima. The lights grew brighter, the music louder, but I could only focus on the moment they joined.

I hated these painful stabs of envy. Every step, every smile made me want to scowl at her for her beauty and falseness.

In truth, she looked perfect with Alpha Kane. Although I was by no means short, this girl was almost six feet tall, with a thin waist and long tanned legs.

When the walk ended, everyone clapped enthusiastically, and even chants broke out.

"Amanda!"

"Amanda!"

That same fake smile that every model perfects after the show appeared on her lips; she knew she’d done a good job, and she certainly had.

"See, I told you so!" Ronald exulted next to me.

Alpha Kane came down from the stage and called us both backstage.

When we joined him, he asked, allowing his assistant to take off his coat.

"So, what do you think?"

"She’s perfect, except for all that plastic," Ronald snorted, leaning against a table littered with brushes and combs.

Alpha’s gaze darted to me, waiting for an answer. As disgusted as I was when she hugged him, I couldn’t deny the impeccability of her performance.

"She’s gorgeous, her walk is unique and graceful. She knows how to attract the attention of the audience. Among all the models, she was definitely the best. My vote goes to Amanda."

My mouth hurt from the words I’d spoken, but they had to be said.
