Chapter 7: Epic card

Leo picked up the two cards that had fell to the floor after killing the zombies.

The first card was a stark , simple white the defining trait of common cards, but the second card left behind by the slain mutant zombie , radiated with a rich , deep purple hue .

Turning over the common card, he read the text

( Common Card – Hamburger )

Leo blinked, momentarily stunned. He could get fast food from these drops? After the sheer astonishment of his morning, however, the shock quickly faded into silent acceptance.

In his previous life, he had lived forty years and seen a lifetime’s worth of unnatural and brutal things .

Being a professional assassin had drilled one absolute rule into his core.

Control your emotions, or let them get you killed. He forced his face into a mask of calm, though his mind reeled at the usefulness of it.

Next, he turned his attention to the purple card .

( Epic Card – Apocalypse Truck )

Intrigued, he flipped it over to read the finer text etched across the back.

"An Apocalypse Truck, sturdy in build and running on both solar energy and fuel. It’s highly advanced, and its inbuilt silencers make almost no noise when it starts and travels around. Its body is made of black technology alloy from an advanced civilization, which shields the aura of living beings. Perfect for your apocalyptic adventures."

The purple card was an Epic Card, and there was a description written on it about the vehicle.

Leo’s expression remained perfectly stoic, but a surge of excitement coursed through him. He had just seen this exact vehicle listed in the system store. The price was a staggering 50,000 nucleus crystals. To buy it outright, he would have had to slaughter at least fifty thousand mutant zombies.

He fought down the powerful urge to summon the truck right then and there. The adrenaline from the brutal fight was fading, leaving behind a crushing wave of exhaustion.

The weakened state mentioned in his origin card compelled him to be cautious . Pushing his luck in an unsecured location might prove costly to him.

Instead, he willed the hamburger into reality. It materialized in his hand, wrapped in clean paper and radiating warmth. As he took the first bite, a look of genuine surprise crossed his face , it tasted entirely fresh, the cheese perfectly melted and the meat savory.

"I wonder where the system actually pulls these items from" , he thought, chewing thoughtfully.

He finished the meal in a few quick bites and washed it down with the remaining water from his plastic bottle.

Shaking the bottle , he realised with a grimace that it was nearly empty. Yet, the anxiety that would have normally accompanied a lack of resources was entirely gone.

Leo knew that from now on, as long as he continued killing zombies and mutants, he could keep obtaining cards, collect a massive amount of resources, and live a comfortable life.

Although he had transmigrated into an apocalyptic world, he liked his current life much more. Here, there were no more superiors or organisations that could give him orders.

No one who could decide his fate according to their whims.

Here, he was a free man with the freedom to do whatever he wanted and go wherever he wanted.

But he knew that to completely live his life freely now, he first had to become stronger. Stronger than anyone or anything in this world.

Only then would he be completely free.

He knew that just killing some zombies had not made him invincible. He couldn’t become arrogant now.

He was still weak at the current moment.

So he made up his mind to complete the next system task as soon as possible.

He stood up, took the crowbar in one hand and the gun in the other, and stepped out of the room.
